ASA bans "shocking" Kane & Lynch ads

Magazine and television ads ordered not be shown again; they were supposed to be "cinematic", says Edios
The Advertising Standards Authority has banned "shocking" magazine and television ads for Eidos and IO Interactive's Kane & Lynch: Dead Men.

The magazine ad, which shows a crying, gagged woman with her head held back by Kane and co, has been ordered not to be printed again after 26 middle-aged mothers... sorry, 'complaints' called it "graphic" and "shocking", MCV reports.

"The portrayal of violence it contained, with particular regard to the female hostage, was graphic and too shocking to be seen in an untargeted medium," The ASA said.

The television ad was also moaned at, because of a "crunch" sound when the butt of a rifle hits a victim's head, and a man with a bloodied face appears to have his throat cut. "We considered [this was] likely to cause offence and distress to viewers despite the animated treatment," said the body.

In defence, Eidos said the poster image was intended to be "cinematic" and it was not its intention to cause offence. The publisher also pointed out that the woman in the print ad was unharmed despite being gagged.

Channel 4 and Channel Five have apologised for any distress caused from broadcasting the ad.

Nice bit of advertising, reminds me of R* tactics. Bit of controvasy never hurt anyone, but at least R* generally have something good to sell.

Ah yes, but the VW ad with the singing/shaking dog is obviously FAR more distressing. 300+ complaints to the RSPCA alone! Wink

Kane & Lynch may have been hyped before release which lead to people being disappointed by it but i think its a really good game actually, cool story for the single player campaign and the multiplayer is also very good.

Well, fancy forcing a dog to sing like that. I dont even think they have the window open in the car.

I'm with you i'm liking the game (single player) so far, not as bad as a lot of people seemed to make it out but thats just my opinion. Although it did only cost me 20 quid Wink

I really like this game, when I heard about it (very hyped)I thought this game could go far, many friends said that they thought the game was not that good, their main reason they say it is bad because they don't like the cover system and the amount of bullets it takes to kill others.

What they did say they liked was the fact that you are running around with a crazy man with a shotgun they thought it was quite funny and they would play the game just to run around with him.

"Who shall look after the Yakuza bosses daughter? I know! The crazy, psycho, murdering, knutjob. Nothing could possibly go wrong with him in charge!".

offence and distress? who are they kidding?

I think they did this just so that they could show their employers that they aren't just a waste of their money and that they can actually be really retarded, much to everyones' disappointment.

What happened to free speech and freedom in general? Are we not allowed to decide what will cause offence to us any more or do we need a crack squad of mental institute escapee's to do that for us?

Lol.... no virtual people were harmed during the making of this advert!

Absolutely, and those who decide they would be offended by a man about to have his throat slit or a woman bound and gagged in distress shouldn't have it shoved in their faces. This sounds very similar to the bill boards for the film Captivity which showed Elisha Cuthbert being tortured. I find it unbelievable that the advertises, in either case, would think that it would be acceptable, and is clearly done to get more publicity. Funnily enough, that film was meant to be s**t too.

100% agree...what are they teaching people these days? - it just doesn't even make sense when you read it!
