Hirokazu Hamamura, the president of Famitsu parent company Enterbrain, has hinted that there's a chance Nintendo will reveal a new iteration of the DS at E3.
What's more interesting is that according to a translation made by website Akayuki, Nintendo spokesman Hiroshi Yasushi did not deny this rumour, but told Famitsu that the company cannot comment at this point.
To be honest, given Nintendo's current state of mind we can't even imagine what madness could be part of a third-iteration of the DS. Even a smell sensor wouldn't shock us that much at this point. Your own thoughts below.
A new DS with internal flash memory, bigger screens and better buttons would do me nicely.
I stopped playing my DS a few months ago but just started on Pokemon Pearl again, with the amount I'm using it, a new one wouldn't be a waste of money. Especially as the original stylus is so damn small!
A DS that doesn't cripple an average adults hands would be nice. Whilst the Lite looks sleek, it's rectangular form and poorly located (and sized) shoulder buttons hardly makes it an ergonomic masterpiece.
Nintendo said absolutely ages ago that they were making a model with larger screens for those with poorer eyesight (mainly the older generation), and many deemed it unlikely ever to be released outside Japan. So I'm guessing this is what will be unveiled at long last.

Really? I don't remember anything other than pure speculation from unofficial sources. Much like this article
Remove GBA slot - slimmer build? Larger Screens, same dimensions as Lite please Finally a button volume control instead of a slider!
I prefer a dial, slider or other analogue forms of adjusting volume. I do see where you're coming from on the one hand; sometimes the DS seems to either be too quiet or too loud; but I just hate having to tap a volume button repeatedly to get it to a good point.
anyone every thought it might be the new game boy? Nintendo did say they wanted a three pillar thing with the home console, game boy and DS......
Nothing every got mentioned of the gameboy series again.....
just a thought!
Because that was just Nintendo covering their back. If the DS flopped they could go back to the Gameboy. With such a huge success, i am sure fans would not want another Gameboy that isn't compatible with the DS. 2 handhelds that play different games, from the same company would be a bad idea. For fans, for games developers etc.

Totally agree, cannot play it for long periods of time, It a good job you can just close the screen and then open it a few hours later and its exacly how you left it, ith hardly any power drained.
I expect a micro version, but they realy should not loose the GBA slot as this is used for more than just GBA games.
I dont think they'll add any functionality to the games (Smell sensor? you can be stupid sometimes CVG) But build in media playback with a few gig of flash memory/MicroSD slot would be welcome. Maybe add a 3rd mini low res screen to the front, and a click wheel so you can browse music while the DS is shut.

Nope, Nintendo announced a while back (last E3 I think?) that the Gameboy brand was official dead, because the DS has been so successful. They said it would make no sense to have Gameboy and DS.
A new DS is obvious. With sales declining in Japan this would kick off another huge sales increase.
Exactly right. It'll only help surge the amount of money Nintendo is making - I don't think anyone predicted the DS will do this well. I enjoyed playing mine, however there weren't all to many games to own. Whereas I'm now considering a PSP because of the ability to play PS1 games etc, that'll add a huge lifespan to it.
And as for Gameboy name being dead, I thought everyone knew that? 'cos the DS didn't follow in its name, it reinvigorated Nintendo's handheld market. Rather than re-launching a gameboy with afew extra features, the DS was a much needed kick to the backside of Nintendo.
I have no idea what this DS could look like though - I was quite confused when reading the article. Why fix something when it aint broke? The DS is pretty fine as it is, as its success has shown.
Loses GBA Advance, adds either internal flash or SD slot New Virtual console Store for the DS with original gameboy and GBA games, plus newe DSWare games - Nintendo likes their money for old rope strategy it seems. MP3 player and browser built in. Extend the Wii mail to the ds with a keyboard on bottom screen. And (why not) a camera - pics can be uploaded to Wii photo channel, used as a DS Mii etc
Upgraded from a DS to a DS liteback in October last year, unless this one actually offers a technical advantage over the DS lite such as memory slots etc then i wont be buying this new one, the DS lite is a great console.
it is a bit annoying though that they keep relesing new versions of the ds as i have just bought a ds lite after selling my old ds and now there telling me an even better version is coming out. screw that and just get on with releasing brawl in europe damn it
I can't understand why Nintendo want to re-design the DS other than to milk a cash-cow! I fail to see why the need to redesign it again, it's fine as it is!
The only downside is that GBA cartridges stick out at the bottom whereas on the original they didn't, but other than that it's fine!

Not really, because that way developers would stop thinking they'd have to implement crap and gimmick touch screen controls to games and we'd get decent ones. Obviously there are decent games on the DS, but we could do with more games like Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros. which focus more on the gameplay rather than dodgy controls. Plus a New GameBoy could be used to focus more on the hardcore...
