Call of Duty 4 is "leading the way" in the first-person shooter genre, with recent competition from EA and Ubisoft "failing to inspire", according to publisher Activision.
Speaking in trade mag MCV, marketing director David Tyler said, "We're pleased to have Call of Duty 4 leading the way in the FPS genre, with recent launches such as Army of Two and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 failing to inspire."
The Infinity Ward shooter has sold 1.3 million copies to date in the UK, and the recently released Variety Map Pack is currently doing good business on Xbox Live (with PSN inbound).
"Call of Duty 4 has been a phenomenal success for us and reflects Activision's commitment to creating truly ground-breaking games," continued Tyler, putting on his PR hat.
"One of the things we've seen is that people outside of what you'd consider 'normal' gamers, are actually getting into this a lot, including quite a number of celebrities."
Funny he should say that - just the other day we played who we thought to be the young Beale kid from Eastenders, but it turned out to be just another annoying nine-year-old who can shoot videogame guns better than us. He didn't sound old enough to be playing too!
He's not wrong about Army of Poo, but I think R6V2 has something to offer. OK, it may feel a bit lightweight after COD4 online, but it does have a bit of a tactical slant to it, even if it never entirely plays out that way online.
Oh, and online co-op, COD4 didn't have that. Massive oversight in my book, even if I do still prefer COD4 by miles overall.
Nothing like blowing your own horn, eh guv! It just so happens that in this case he is 100% correct. COD4 is leaps and bounds ahead of it's nearest rivals and deservedly so. It is the best FPS of all time in my opinion, nothing even comes close!
COD4 was a good single player game but trying to get a multiplayer game going on live was murder. some of the worst lag ever due to always picking the only yank in the room to host, indestructible opponents that won't die even when you stab them 3 times, and the most unfair ranking system which made playing against people ranked higher a nightmare. Rainbow Six 2, for me, is the daddy just now, with various game modes and a decent cover system it just seems more fun to play with mates. Can't say much for army of 2 though.
If my Willy was as big as CoD 4’s, Id be waving it in the face of the competition too !! Its completely changed my opinion on FPS, I was never a fan before, having played, doom, MoH, Wolfenstain and others. The problem for the competition is that not all gamers want 15 FPS’s and although I have been converted, it will take a great deal for me to buy another one.
There are a few in the pipeline that look good, but will have to be great to shift lots of units and dent the large market appeal of CoD 4.
1.3 million copies in the UK alone?! Blimey, I didn't know it was that much. MP wise, Call of Duty 4 is definitely one of the smoothest, addictive and most satisfying console FPS's I've played in a long time.
I haven't had this much fun online from an FPS since I originally got in to Counter-strike 1.5 way back in 2000/01. Something CoD4 reminds me alot of, in a good way. Before that, MP wise, Goldeneye gave me a similar warm feeling inside.

I nearly agree with you, apart from Goldeneye on the N64 is still the best IMO. (OK graphically maybe not the complete package is just immense)
Ubisoft have dissapointed by rushing both GRAW and RB6V games so they look more like addons rather than sequels. It's actually insulting that they have packaged RB6V as a new game, I miss the days when these games were actually tactical. They will eventually just make them into Serious Sam esq shootfest titles. By dumming down the game they have lost their uniqueness and have become bland shooters.
if you have a Source game (Counter Strike Source or Day of Defeat Source) on your PC, download and install the SDK mod thing from STEAM, and theres a online Goldeneye, it is the N64 classic being put on PC using the Source engine, i think i found it by using google, type Goldeneye Source or something like that. when i played it last year it was in its beta stage, so its likely to be finished now.
anyway, i wasn't getting into army of two, i was expecting something better, rainbow six lasted longer but for me the only thing was different was the XP system, everything else was like vegas 1, i think online isnt better or maybe worse, it has less game modes, and its still laggy, once i shot this german in the back with a whole magazine and he near died. for me, CoD4 is still my favourite
edit: i just been on the Goldeneye Source web site, they have started the beta from scratch, starting the whole thing again, also the new beta was mentioned to be used by the orange box SDK
Omg, the guy your talking about (the beale kid) is my mates cousin, he barely ever sees him though.
Anyways, don't mean to sound rude but is this really news worthy? I never would have guessed that activison are happy that they've sold a whole bunch of copies and are still doing better than rainbow six vegas and army of two.
Call of Duty 4 is dominating the FPS scene at the moment, no question about it. The most successful CoD of all time? I think so. Obviously, that's a great reason to allow a developer to ride on the back of the franchise name and release... a WW2 version.
I agree, COD4 has a fantastic single player storyline and the online stuff is great, but it isn't perfect. I mean, how many level 55's are there? Soon at least half the community will be Commanders, which is hardly a reflection of player skill.
Just a few tweeks here and there and we may be looking at a number one, but for now COD4 is in my top 10 of all time. But anyone who hasn't played it needs to have a go, because there won't be another FPS like it for a while.
I see what he is sayin, Army of Two was very uninspiring, and Vegas 2 is more of an update of a very good game from 2006.
But when push comes to shove, CoD4 is gathering dust on my shelf at the moment because I prefer working as a team, in a slower paced tactical game, that I do running around with quick respawns. But it is personal preference.
CoD4 is a great game, first in the franchise I have ever owned, but if it came to that, Vegas or GRAW the clancy games would be my personal choice every time.
Grr... another egotistical game company. Activision thinks they can just talk trash because they finally got a game right? It only took them 4 tries. CoD4 still pales in comparison to Bioshock. CoD4 is also far from gaming Nirvana. The gameing press and multiplatform gamers were starved for a high-production value FPS other then Halo, and Activision just happen to deliver at just the right moment. The game does a good job of hiding weak enemy AI by throwing endless hordes of them at you. It is not a perfect game and Activision had better learn some humility. You NEVER saw Bungie talking trash like this when they were the undisputed console FPS kings.
Get more then one good game under your name before you start calling other people's games "uninspired", Activision.

Actually i think that Call of duty and Call of duty 2 are superior to CoD 4, both off and online. Having said that, CoD 4 is still a bloody good game.
I thought army of two was a third person shooter. Anyways you can hardly compare it to Cod and Vegas. Also im dissapointed that Vegas has left the old style Clancy games like ravenshield, its become more like counterstrike than r6 nowadays.
COD4 is the only game I play these days, I'm even thinking of canceling my order for GTA4, as I know I'll just put it in the "games to play some time in the future, but never will now" stack, along with Assassins creed, bioshock and PGR4(I've played each just the once). And Fingers crossed they'll think twice about cashing in and chucking out another WW2 COD, as number three was complete pish.
But when push comes to shove, CoD4 is gathering dust on my shelf at the moment because I prefer working as a team, in a slower paced tactical game, that I do running around with quick respawns. But it is personal preference.
Why not just play one of the modes that doesn't allow respawns then?
I've never owned any other CoD games but 4 and I can honestly say it's one of the if not the best FPS i've played.
What worries me though is that the series will go back to WW2 which in many peoples eyes is a step backwards, that genre has been done to death and CoD4 was exactly what FPS fans needed.
Hopefully Bad Company will live up to the hype, wasn't going nuts over the beta we've just had so hoping the full game will be a better experience!
Just finished Army Of Two. Its average, a bit repetitive, the ending sucks and most magazines totally overrated it! Just started Dark Sector and its a way better and tighter experience!
I just finished Army of Two today and to be honest.........it was s**te, the single player mode is a short, boring experience with a non existent online mode (rental, thank god)
R6V was a great game, I might rent the second one, but I cannot understand COD4s success, it was a relatively simple idea that has caused this phenomenon, nontheless they deserve all the praise
COD4 was fun for a while. But I've got to say I much rather vegas 2 now. To me all the maps on COD4 just play the same and the DLC was just a waste of time. Yeah the perks were cool while you were unlocking them .The cover system and weapons in vegas just kill the endless running around in cod. IMHO
