Nintendo has issued a statement denying the firm's has any plans to unveil a new version of DS at E3 in a few months' time.
Responding to an inquiry from Famitsu publisher Enterbrain's Yukan Fuji, the company flat out denied the speculation put forth last week.
A Nintendo spokesperson said: "We cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won't be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so would like to clearly deny this. We're having a hard time understanding what kind of evidence [Mr. Hamamura] had for saying this," according to GamePro.
So no strange and quirky addition to the handheld for the foreseeable future, then. Or at least, not until the other side of E3.
Of course Ninty will have a DS replacement in the works (if not already finished) or at least majorly beyond the R&D phase, they'd be crazy not to with their current market position!...but it's pretty s**tty of this guy to release any unconfirmed details without permission as it may make any potential buyers want to hold on for the new machine...sue his bottom N!
I'm sure I read somewhere that someone at Nintendo confirmed a long time ago that a follow-up to the DS had been finished, but has been put on the back-burner because of the unforseen success of the DS. It had a poor year one whilst developers got their heads round it, if I remember correctly.
I expect the DS2 design will be reviewed again as sales slow down for the DS Lite and will feature a lot of connectivity to the Wii and the internet.
I never thought this rumour had any legs to it, the redesign that was the DS Lite was pretty much necessary since it ironed out the design flaws of the original model but the DS is still selling by the bucketload at the mo so there's no point in replacing or redesigning it.
