Ricky Gervais in GTA: "I look slightly tougher"

"They captured the whole horror, except I look slightly tougher," says Office bloke
Office funny man Ricky Gervais is in GTA IV, as part of Liberty City's stand-up comedy club, and somewhere else he's not saying...

Speaking to free magazine Shortlist, Gervais revealed that he performs three minute skits of never-before-heard material in Liberty City's comedy club, as well as gags from his recent Fame tour.

The Comedy Club is one of several extracurricular activities you can get up to in GTA IV, as well as bowling, darts and yes; drinking.

"It's a first - which always interests me," he said. "It was shot in New York, my favourite place in the world, and I got to wear a tight lycra suit as part of the digital process. No, hold on, that wasn't so good.

"Unfortunately they captured the whole horror, except I look slightly tougher. It is seriously a big deal, though. Games have outsold Hollywood for the past few years so it's nice to be a small part of that."

The Comedy Club isn't the only place you'll find Gervais in GTA IV, he teases, but he's not saying where else he crops up yet.

Let's hope Rockstar didn't stop with him. After all, San Andreas had Samuel L mother-f**king Jackson.

Am I the only person that doesn't find him at all funny?

Am I the only person that doesn't find him at all funny?

He was great when he was on the 11 0'clock show, but now he is just so full of himself. GTA could have done without him (IMO). Confused

Am I the only person that doesn't find him at all funny?
Nope, i can't really go his work either. he's gone so far up his own ass that any good joke he came up with would be muffled by his colon. the office wasn't funny and in extra's it was the special guests that had all the good lines. he plays the same smarmy character in all his roles e.g. night at the museum. but then that also had ben stiller in it who's also only got 2 different characters in him, but at least he's funny. hopefully the game has some bigger stars than ricky f**kin gervais. and it better not be catherine bleedin tate or little britain. worst shows ever!
ensabahnur on 17 Apr '08
I've never really found his scripted comedy shows all that funny, although a recent episode of Extras made me grin, but he's funny when he's being interviewed and his stand-up was good. And, of course the 11 O'Clock Show stuff was great.

I guess his style of satire fits in with the GTA4 world pretty well though, so we'll need to see how it goes.
Dajmin on 17 Apr '08
you guys are funny...his entire act has always been about how "up his own bottom" he is. his skitts are based on how perfect he is and everyone else is retarded or poor or ugly lol
the man is a legend. this is totally awesome news tbh.
nologo on 17 Apr '08
I really like the Guy - I thoguth the office was fantastic, Extras was quite good, his first couple of stand-ups were good (considering he had never done stand up before) but I hear his latest stand-up is ok.

I think the public seems to be suffering from too much gervais as there is quite a public backlash at the moment - especially since his Diana(or was it LiveEarth) mess-up.

Either way, if you like him, you can watch his 3 and a half minute set and then leave - if you don't like him, I'm sure you can gun him down in cold blood (in the game).
chris_gower on 17 Apr '08
This game sounds great, not sure about this, but could be really funny.
Barca Azul on 17 Apr '08
Nologo's right, he's always had the same swagger and "I'm better than you" demanour about him. It's part of his act, even back when he was on the 11 o'clock show he was the same, he is a real life David Brent.

Sounds good anyway, hopefully they've got a few other comedians to do short shows. Maybe a bit of Chris Rock or someone? This sort of stuff is what makes Rockstar games a cut above everyone else! If it was another publishers game they'd be shouting the voice actors names from the roof.

Oh and Ben Stiller really is not funny.
monkey_puncher on 17 Apr '08
I think he's very funny and very talented, especially when it comes to writing. Hopefully Stephen Merchant might pop up aswell. As an agent perhaps....
Loz01 on 17 Apr '08
That is fantastic! I can't wait to encounter big Ricky in the game, he is without doubt one of the funniest guys in the world. I wonder whose genius idea that was but let's have more of that kinda "guest star" appearance in games. Classic!!
wudragon on 17 Apr '08
Oh dear, this is the only negative about the game so far. I wonder if you can shoot him? Laughing

dunno about that, the simpsons episode he wrote was terrible. but then again most of the simpsons episodes are terrible now. and ben stillers a hell of a lot funnier. i don't ever see gervais gettin the starring role in any film thats as acclaimed as any one of stillers films.
ensabahnur on 17 Apr '08
As someone who thought Ricky Gervais was a comedy genius, I can confirm that he is definately getting less and less funny.
I hardly laughed when I watched his Fame stand-up.

Steve Merchant on the other hand is hilarious. And anyone who hasnt heard the legend that is Karl Pilkington should download the Ricky Gervais podcasts now.

Ben Stiller hasn't been funny since There's Something About Mary. As far as I can tell, his whole 'act' is that he gets angry and people are supposed to laugh.

And yes, you're right about The Simpsons; since 2000 it seems to be a challenge to see 'how many celebrities can we get in an episode?'
chris_gower on 17 Apr '08
Gervais is a very funny guy, The Office and Extra's are classic British comedy (even if other countries don't quite get it...a bit like what originally happened with Fawlty Towers)

His inclusion in the game is a very clever move by R* in my opinion as his many fans who may not have bought the game now have another reason to consider it, myself included!!
Tonyb on 17 Apr '08
The Office was pure genius and the Extras was pretty funny as well. I personally think that it is an inspired idea to have Ricky doing stand-up in New York as he appeals to UK and USA audiences.

Reminds me of that time David Bowie was singing in a club in Nomad Soul for the Dreamcast. Really helps to up the believability stakes.
Mark240473 on 17 Apr '08
Well I know what I'll be doing on launch day; visiting this "comedy club" and shooting t***face Gervais in the face, over and over again Very Happy (and they say videogames make people violent Razz)

Seriously though, awkward silences do not amount to humour, no matter how much facial gurning and retarded dancing you do, nor is repeating the same phrases over and over again in the hope that they will become catchphrases, unless of course you have the mental capacity of a dry-roasted peanut.

All they need is to find some way of adding Jack Thompson (which apparently they have already tried to do), Catherine Tate and Chris Moyles for me to kill as well and I'll be in a very happy place indeed >.<

i agree that he only has the two characters. the nice guy who gets a wee bit crazy at people and the asshole who justgets angry. still prefer him to gervais though. and the meet the parents and dodgeball films were funny.

On what planet is that Gervais's act?

He's done the dance once in a TV programme and no matter how much he's asked to do it, for the most part he refuses. Repeating phrases over and over in the hope that they will become a catchphrase? I think you've got Gervais muddled up with Little Britain.

You haven't even seen any of his stand-up have you?

*sigh*
monkey_puncher on 17 Apr '08
I too loathe Gervais. If the game allows you to get up on stage and beat the living snot out of him, I am SO buying it...
Terribly_Mauled on 17 Apr '08
Gervais' cameo in the Scarface game = the funniest moment in a game ever. Hopefully this will be similarly good.

People don't like Gervais because he's arrogant. LaughingLaughingLaughing

When i heard that there was someone very surprising in the game, i just had in the back of my head it was Ricky Gervais. Also i bet that "other thing" he won't talk about is a mission involving him.

Now announce that Karl Pilkington is in it.
brookie_2001 on 17 Apr '08
*Sigh* People need to learn that the arrogance is part of his comedy, and even if it wasn't it's still brilliant.
DivDee on 17 Apr '08
Watched dodgeball again recently, stiller was brill in that.
You're a loser le-fluer!

GTA4 will be even better if I have the option of shooting John barrowman, the cast of eastenders, Russell T davies, Nicholas Cage and the entire left wing contingent of the labour party.
(How would you shoehorn them into the plot I have no idea?)

Oh no Im off on one again, fetch the pills Dr tibbs!

P.S
excuse my spelling, and yes stiller may not have actually uttered that line, but hey it was funny film.
harvoid on 17 Apr '08
I always have, and probably always will find him very funny. I have all of The Office, all of Extras, and all his standup on DVD, and all the Flanimals books. Ive also listened to series 1 of the podcasts, and got the book.

Cant get enough of it, and I dont think he's up his own bottom at all.
Waste_Manager on 17 Apr '08
they should have done this with vicy city and had stand up from Richard Prior and Cheech N Chong haha

Alright first post so go easy on me... Very Happy

I agree with folk who say about Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington but anyone who reckons Gervais isn't funny just doesn't have a sense of humour. Just because he doesn't pile on gag after gag doesn't mean he's not funny. Quite the opposite. The awkward silences are superb, the quality writing and characters within the Office and Extras were fantastic - golden globes anybody? Also, having seen him live I can testify that the guy is hilarious. I for one am really looking forward to hanging around in the comedy club and listening to Gervais spout his comical genius.

ParmaViolet on 17 Apr '08
I think the point is he not arrogant. It's a character, his comedy front.

Because of that though he's a bit like marmite.

Personally I like him, I think his stand up is brilliant and the fact that he can use his comedy persona to say things other comedians wouldn't get away with is also an excellent trick.

To be honest though, I'm not bothered if he's in GTA or not. It will neither make nor break the game.
MisterBedo on 17 Apr '08
Arrogance?

If that isn't self-deprecating humour I don't know what is. The people who say it's part of his act are on the money.

Exactly. How can people not get this? If they don't find him funny in general, fair enough, but as has been said several times now, the arrogance is all part of it. A perfect example of this was the sketch he did for Comic Relief with Steven Merchant, Jamie Oliver, Bob Geldof and Bono. That was great. When you see him being interviewed for real, he comes across as being very down to earth and humble. I love that he's in the game. Wonder who else they got? Keeping my fingers crossed for Chris Rock and Denis Leary. Shame Bill Hicks is no longer with us. Can't wait to find out what other surprises GTA4 has in store for us.

Alright, so it was more of a generalisation of what is considered "comedy" these days without ever actually being funny Smile

You haven't even seen any of his stand-up have you?

No, no I haven't. And based on what I've seen of his ability thus far I don't intend to, in the same way that having stepped in dog excrement in the street I wouldn't go back and try it again with the other foot to see if it was any better.

Have a nice day Smile

Wudragon I dont watch comedies because they are in some way intelligently written I watch them for a good laugh. Comedy is different for everyone some people are made laugh easily other it takes a push so I dont think you should be accusing anyone of having no intelligence based on their comedy preferences. I like comedians like that mad Scottish man Billy Conelly and some Irish man whose name I dont know. Now their funny and i'm sure lots of people will agree with me. I dont think Gervais is funny thats my opinion so dont be dissin my intellect because I dont like him.

GTA4 will be even better if I have the option of shooting John barrowman, the cast of eastenders, Russell T davies, Nicholas Cage and the entire left wing contingent of the labour party.

I do like the idea of a Queen Vic in GTA 4. Give us the BFG from Doom and I'll stroll in there and evaporate those mockney bastards!

I do question anyone who would watch dodgeball more than once though! I've seen TV adverts with more laugh out loud moments than the full 80 minute running length of Dodgeball.

Anyway, while we're on comedy, join my Facebook Group - "If You Don't Like Peep Show, You're Probably Not Worth Knowing" - the new series of Peep Show is out in May and I need another 9,000 members to get to 50,000 for the start of it!

I would post a link but Facebook is banned at work. Search it!

Huh? - I have absolutely no idea what you are getting at with that post, maybe I'm missing your 'suttle' humour (it's 'subtle' and 'humour', by the way)

Personally, I don't really care if you take yourself seriously or not - I do take exception to your belief that homosexuality is a 'sin', or in any way wrong. I didn't bother to post when you were attempting to defend this (moronic) view the other day, but I have to when you continue to post this drivel - I'm sure I'm not the only one offended by it.

Once again - keep it yourself or go back to some YEC website with the other morons.

I just don't find him funny, like I was saying earlier I find that Scottish man Billy Connely funny but Ricky Gervis just isn't funny his programmes are up there with the likes of Curb Your Enthusiasm which is just not funny. Even the Office back in the States isn't funny. Its just not my thing.

Laughing we really do have vastly different comedic taste, curbs is probably my second favourite comedy show. the office in the states has very little to do with ricky gervais apart from the first two seasons being based on the uk version.

can we go for three strikes and say you don't like family guy? Wink

Hey. not a bad word against family guy. Or I will stike down upon thee with great vengance and furious anger... etc. Seriosly though, You dont like gervais or curb? Your place must be a hoot Wink

family guy is great, but american dad (same creators) is better. roger is the man!

never really seen a ricky gervais thing, what should i look for on the awld torrent? whats his best show? the office?>

Yeah i'd have to agree with you there. I thought you couldnt beat Family Guy but now i'm hooked on American Dad!

You're right you didn't say that, my apologies for inferring you did. The majority or the other people who say they don't like him cited his "fake" arrogance as the main reason. So if you don't find him arrogant, then what is it exactly that you don't find funny about him?

here's a snippet of the good old xfm days, the real ricky, no comedy persona attahced

Heard this? http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kpbnnYzGY0o Old XFM stuff.

Only Fools and Horses better than The Office. Oh man. Good one. Who the hell would think that right?

NO, NO, NO!!!

That smarmy snooker cue should go and polish his emmys and golden globes and whatever else he goes on about and leave us in peace! Mad

Two strikes i'm still not out. Family Guy is funny as hell random at time but funny as hell. Especially Stewie. If you compare Family Guy and new episodes of The Simpsons, Family Guy wins hands down. Where do you get American Dad over here?

Am I the only person that doesn't find him at all funny?

He was great when he was on the 11 0'clock show, but now he is just so full of himself. GTA could have done without him (IMO). Confused

Thats funny, I thought he was absolutely s**t on the 11 o'clock show he never did stand a chance replacing Ali G.
But in my opinion hes quality now, never stop laughing at his jokes. Even today I still laugh at the office.
And him being full of himself is more of a p**s take of himself then anything, I think you just don't get it.
spooney100 on 17 Apr '08

Sort it out ffs, you really need to get a sense of humour and start living a little, stop f**king moaning!!

man i know i said i don't find gervais funny but i'd rather watch everything he's done than watch a single episode of only fools and horses. as for family guy and american dad, out of the 2 i still prefer family guy but dad's certainly getting there. but roger is the worst character in it. bullock, stans boss, is well the best in it, voiced by old captain picard himself.

I thought he was more edgey and funny in his early stuff and that is when I did 'get him'. It is abit like Chris moyles. When he was on really early in the morning, when he first came to radio 1, he used to get away with murder and was far funnier than he is now. I don't know if it over expossure or that they just start to try too hard and lose whatever it was that made them unique.
Anyhoo, like I said earlier, each to there own I guess. Wink

I certainly hope you can hurt him. Can't stand the smug, one trick pony.
boskersrevenge on 17 Apr '08
It's weird how people don't understand that when he's "arrogant" during his standup in interviews, he's just doing it for laughs. He's not actually massively up his own bottom.

Although I agree that he's actually becoming less and less funny and that his act is over reliant on him pointing at someone and saying "look how ignorant he is!"
Bizarrobike on 17 Apr '08
Bloke is about as unfunny as a bullet to the head, which is the first thing he will get if we can walk into this club and free roam!

I can't stand him, or his so called "comedy". Hell i wont let it stop me buying the game though, just need to remember to avoid the comedy club!
influenceuk on 17 Apr '08
Gervais is a t**t.
locky_uk_2000 on 17 Apr '08
Only Fools and Horses is FAR funnier than anything Gervais has had a hand in Laughing
Terribly_Mauled on 17 Apr '08
Seriously if you don't find Ricky Gervais funny, watch "Ricky Gervais: Fame", made me p**s my pants for about an hour and a half. It was top of the dvd chart for several weeks and is so funny. Its awesome they've actually put something british in this game. Bring on GTA IV.
CrippledHooba on 17 Apr '08
can you shoot him?

Does he have to revert to the brent dance, when no one finds him funny on stage and he is dying a slow death?

might be worth getting this game, to just shoot him.......
The_Hun1 on 17 Apr '08

Yeah, it's understandable.

It's just that he's never moved on from David Brent. Ever.

It's funny not unfunny.

Am I the only person that doesn't find him at all funny?

Hes a total Muppet, first negative vibe I have heard about this game.
davelk on 17 Apr '08
I hate ricky gervais, so Id love him to be in gta, it hives me an oputunity to shoot him on stage as much as my ammo allows.......
madrandall on 17 Apr '08
This is awesome. The Office was genious! I hope he has a big part, and is just hilarious.
gazza_be on 17 Apr '08
Am I the only person that doesn't find him at all funny?

Nope. I'm glad to see this, as the telly always makes it seem like the English think Gervais is some sorta god. But, anyway - yeah he does suck *major nutsack.

*I've been informed that it's actually Captain Nutsack now. Wink

Knowing this c**ts in the game is almost making me consider canceling my pre-order
basscadet on 18 Apr '08
Amen.

Having this numbnuts anywhere in the game was a misjudgement of popular culture for once on Rockstars part... it seems a lot of people would agree with me that this bigot should be kept out
Tidus3000 on 18 Apr '08
I look forward to showering the t*** with bullets

Razz
wolfeater on 18 Apr '08
I'm gonna watch him from the shadows at the back of the comedy club, sinking a few vodkas, & then like Tom Cruise in the club in Collateral, I'm gonna break loose & assassinate his smug podgy ass, or not seeing as he is a recurring character, bar steward!
W3881N5 on 18 Apr '08

But...but...but...he's being ironic! haha. Honestly, if you want a bigot look at Jim Davidson or someone like that.

how is he a bigot exactly?
murfo on 18 Apr '08
He's like Marmite, you love him or you hate him.

Sorry to the guy, but its a bit of a step down from Samuel L. Jackson and Phil Collins.
AegisK on 20 Apr '08
you guys are funny...his entire act has always been about how "up his own bottom" he is. his skitts are based on how perfect he is and everyone else is retarded or poor or ugly lol
the man is a legend. this is totally awesome news tbh.

i agree.

if he WASN'T up his bottom like that then he'd just be another comedian.

but he is. and his clever humor and nervous breakdowns make him bloody legendary. he's like britain's mascot (maybe Razz)
