If you're looking for something to moan about this morning, here it is; the PlayStation 3 version of GTA IV features a five minute mandatory install.
A 1UP writer posted about the install on the NeoGAF forum, after playing the PS3 version at Rockstar's iron fortress.
Five minutes isn't nearly as bad as 22, but it's still been enough to send the internet barmy on the forums. We can't see what the fuss is about, personally. Doesn't every PS3 game feature an install these days?
As for the Xbox 360 version, there are also rumours this morning that that version will feature an "optional" hard drive install, although that's still very much unconfirmed.
We're currently awaiting reply from the lovely chaps at Rockstar about the hard drive controversy, and will let you know what it has to say.
To be fair I don't see what the major problem is with installing data. It's only because Blu Ray read speed is less, and the install speeds up load times, which is good. As long as it is only about 5 minutes, maybe 15 at max, it's not going to make much difference to the experience of the game, apart from makingit run quicker.
hey if it makes the game run smoother i don't think anyones going to be bottomd about installing for this game. hopefully the 360 version has an optional install cause i'm sure this will be the game to send a few 360's into meltdown by constantly loading from disc. crackdown was the game that buggered mine up and i think that a small install could help the machine out.
What's the point in making it mandatory if it's only 5mins? Surely it can't install much information in just 5mins, so I don't see why it would need that information installed for it to work.
He also said the Rockstar rep told him that the PS3 version looked a little bit better..
He was coy about any performance differences. But he didn't deny that the PS3 version might lack the traffic and other pop-in that's in the 360 version.
Maybe the install helps with that.
He also said the PS3 version has 'pretty good' optional Sixaxis control for helicopters, as well as boats and bikes, though it takes a little getting used to.
I heard it's do with performance & pop up thingy. I'd be happier to play GTA4 with better performance.
5 mins is about 500mb to 1gb, no big deal.
No not a big deal - but i dont know im starting to feel a lil sorry for the NONE techy ppl with the 40 GB - im sure there drives are starting to fill up now
Some how i feel like im heading back to the Commodore 64 days with the waiting!
Saying that on the bright side its a hell of alot smaller than the 9 - 12 GB installs on the PC!!!
I stuck on a till at work, so may as well add another post before lunch.
I don't mind any reasonable install time, it's better than the dreaded POP IN, which can shatter any real sense of libery city being a living breathing world.
It's one of the final missions, you're turning the corner and oh no! were did that bus come from ahhhh smash... mission failed.. arghhhhhhhhh
So are we placing bets that the first spoilers on the net will be on the 360 version due to the PS3 guys being 5 mins behind?
Ha ha! Seriously though, 5mins is no great shakes. The 20min install for DMC was a complete joke, but with GTA, you'll want to spend at least 5min having a look at the map won't you?
Personally, I'll opt for the install version on 360 if it is available, since anything that makes the game run quicker/smoother is going to be worth the effort.
for a start its a playstation website and it also crashes firefox. but hey it may be right. we all remember the occasional pop up in crackdown and saints row had cars that just appeared right in front of u. i hope it has a install on 360 cause thats gonna be the version i'm getting.
I don't own a PS3, but will certainly be getting GTA IV on the 360. But if I did own a PS3, 5 minute install time wouldn't bother me too much. Depends on how much space it would be taking up? I'd be worried if games are to keep going this way, then my HDD will fill up fast.
Though, I do only own a 20gb (cough13cough) HD on my 360... 6gb of that is taken up by Ninja Gaiden Black alone! I suppose at least with the PS3 you can upgrade to any old notebook HDD, at a reasonable price.

is this gonna be a way to force us all to go and get the 120gb (or will that be 113gb)HDD by making 360 games with installs. with microsoft it wouldn't surprise me.

Microsoft seriously needs to bring the price of that badboy down! The amount of money they charge for the 120GB HDD is just ridiculous.
Five minutes? Five bleedin' minutes! Think about that for a moment. It's 300 Seconds! THREE HUNDRED SECONDS! It's an outrage I tells you! An outrage! And I shan't stand for any of it, no I won't. To think, the damn cheek of it! How dare they waste five minutes of my life with this nonsense! How dare they. How will I live knowing that it will take 5 minutes to install? Oh the woe of it all! They will rue the day they forced this mandatory installation on us!
That's what I would say if I was a deranged fanboy forumite, but I'm not, so...
Lol it's just so petty, really. Five minutes is nothing...
Like someone said make a cuppa or study the map. or if you've got the special edition one flick through some art. It's not a big deal like cvg tried to make out.
A 5 min install time is nothing really, i'm not even remotely bothered by installation times in general. If you've got the game, do you really need to be in that much of a hurry to play it?? I'd be more bothered if I preordered the game and it doesn't show up.
I have no issues with the install and I'll definitely be opting for it when I pick up the game (in the middle of May, curses to being on holiday at release!).
I'd like to know how much space it takes though. I'm already starting to run a little short on my 20Gb drive and I don't want to pay the stupid amount they want for the 120Gb version.
DID NOBODY ACTUALLY READ THIS ARTICLE!!! IT WAS FAKE!! The writer didn't actually play it, he was just tyring to show off, its written in the disclaimer at the top of the article.
think it’s time to put an end to this! I’m getting hate mail in languages I can’t even read! This site was created purely for entertainment, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks!
On subject : meh, im getting the 360 and i will gladly welcome an install, just have to make sure iv got enough room for the Halo Legendary pack tho.

There were similar reports last year that the 360 version was outperforming the PS3 version, but I doubt there'll be any major differences between the two versions upon release (that's why the game was delayed in the first place, to get the 360 and PS3 versions level pegging).
Ok...im kind of clueless as to why this would be a problem.
My offical line is always "its a console game so you should put cartridge/disc into machine and be able to play" no install or whatever...if we wanted to install we would buy a pc.
However, times change so i can see why it has to happen.
What i dont understand is that a five min install when you get a HUGE city to explore compared to the twenty min install of DMC 4 where you get a game that is not the best looking thing since sliced bread and finished in a few hours.
I know its all tek stuff which is beyond my brain to comprehend but i think five mins is getting off quite lightly compared to what it could have been.
If i get the game I will get it on the 360 due to the pad being much nicer to play with and the extra content...but i have never much been a fan of GTA.
Honestly this stuff really isnt news, who really cares if it takes 5 min to install some data to make gameplay better?
20min aka DMC4 is too long but most PS3 games are going down this route anyway these days. I'll probably just whack a 500gb HDD in my PS3 when it's cheap enough and be sorted for life about space as well!
5mins? Who cares? Especially since I just pre-ordered my Special Edition version from HMV. I'll just drool over that for 5mins as my game installs. Can't wait
It's not that GTA4 has the install, it's that a lot of games are starting to go down this route...it's almost becoming the norm, and in PS3's case it definitely looks like this is an off-shoot of the crappy BR read speed that only warrants films at this moment in time.
What happens when games start getting much bigger and use the BR drive capacity? Are people going to be happy that every game is taking a 5, 10 or 15GB install, especially when there are so many 40GB systems out there. Buying a new drive is an option and that was a great idea but I think only being able to have 4 or 5 games 'installed' on a brand new system along with the other bits of media is frankly a joke.
Sony need to do something with that shoddy BR drive or make their minds up whether it's a gaming console or a budget BR player. Frankly, another nail in their stupid coffin. This situation is only going to get worse when more game devs have to use the install method.
the 360 owners that were quick to laugh at ps3 having to install now are delighted they can install this. wouldnt want to have the 360 version with no hard drive, it obviously gonna be worse without it. stupid desicion my MS not to have a HD on each 360.
agreed. its a way for M$ to fleece money out of stupid people who go and buy the arcade pack only to find out they cant go online with most games and have to go out and spend a ridiculious amount of money on an official M$ harddrive.

Last time I checked Rockstar were not part of microsoft.......
5mins is not too bad but it is worrying that more and more games are going down this route, before too long you will have to start uninstalling games in order to play new ones and that would be stupid on a console.
As i say, if your all believing that review, then we might aswell say it's 10 minutes to install on the PS3. As they clearly state that in the review to..

never said they were. its microsoft that i'm talking about. at no point do i or vercetti mention rockstar in this post.
That review that said that if you don't install on the 360 version cops will just "pop in" was supposed to be fake I thought?
forget the review then - every single gaming site has it that 360 gta DOES have optional install. its a fact.
so what if u choose NOT to install? it obviously has pop-in and other f**k ups without it. thats what its for! the 360 would have mandatory install, but not all 360s have hard drives, so they cant. therefore, its definately gonna be worse off without the install.
Can you give me some links? Are you sure all the sites aren't reporting on the same story? I've never seen anything about installs mentioned in previews or in the OXM review, that's all I'm saying.
And how do you know it automatically means pop in? It might mean less loading, or shorter loading times in between areas.

because there ARE NO loading times in between any areas or going into houses. it doesnt load after the first time until u die again.
N4G.com : GTA IV 360 has optional HD install
http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/News-135901.aspx
Ok so maybe the loading time between you dying and starting again is less. All i'm saying is you know nothing until the first reputable reviews are out. And that link comes from the same source as this story, it might be worth while waiting for it to be confirmed by other sources too.
If its true, I'm kinda glad that they will be making use of the hard drive.
sounds like u have a 360 with no hard drive.. ha!!
the 360 has an optional install, it doesnt come from the same source.
I have a hard drive pal.
And it IS the same source. CVG wrote: "A 1UP writer posted about the install on the NeoGAF forum, after playing the PS3 version at Rockstar's iron fortress."
Your link says
"This could be very funny. According to “skip” - Andrew Pfister, the writer of 1up’s GTA IV preview - has posted on Neogaf saying that the PS3 version of GTA IV features a five-minute mandatory install. Unsurprisingly, teh internets have gone grade A crackers for it.
We’re also reliably informed this morning that the 360 version features an “optional install” as well."
And i'm assuming the PS3 has installs because of the fact that Blu Ray isn't so fast for streaming, which is also a hardware issue.
But anyway, who cares? I really think the people that would care about the problems would be people that already have the hard drive.
Don't forget, C&VG is being sponsored by Microsoft in their 'GTAIV' special issue. If you read it, they have a major hard-on for the 360 version over the PS3 version.
So it's not surprising they'd try to make such a big deal about this, and ignore the positive things he said about the PS3 version vs the 360 version.
As far as GTAIV goes, their opinion has been bought by Microsoft!
ill be happy to install on my 360 Elite (suppose it is for the best ..meaning faster loading times) .since the dvd drive is 12x ill see this as a plus but not as a huge improvement
for me it's no surprise that it will be mandatory on ps3. FAST DATA Streaming is resolved with HDinstall (slow speed BR-drive)
A lot of ps3games are already using the same technique. I am sure that enough HD space will be a very..very useful for ps3 (20 gig HD ps3 is already outdistanced imo)
less of an issue than the full drive packing in altogther.
i have a mate with a 360 that doesnt play any games cause his drive is f**ked. its just a glorified mp3 player now.
Just like when my third PS2 choked to death on san andreas and mercenaries? Seriously, what's your point? An optional install is a good thing. Use it if you have a HD and want faster/smoother performance from your game. Don't use it if you're budget conscious and don't have a HD/don't care about load times etc.
This is all a load of guff - no-one's properly compared the two versions side-by-side and I dare say there'll be near enough f*ck all difference upon release. Optional/compulsory install whatever...
There's not going to be too many games bigger than GTA IV.
This is an outrage. I want my install times to be much longer. I barely have time to make someting to eat or read the manual. Pathetic. Capcom are much better. A nice 20 min install. Ah...

Final Fantasy XIII... , MGS4 (already announced to have problem with 50 GIG !)
Final Fantasy XIII... , MGS4 (already announced to have problem with 50 GIG !)
Seriously?! Does MGS4 need a 50Gb install? (link please if you've got one). That massive HD doesn't feel like such a bonus if every game you play requires bags of space to compensate for the BR drive.
Does anyone know if Sony have an improved/faster BR drive in the works for future PS3's?
Going by the number of people posting on this topic? Then yes, this is news.
I don't mind installation on 360 in principle, however...will it set a dangerous precendent that may ultimately lead to "HDD required to play this game" scenarios.

Check Play.com they were doing 120GB HDD for the 360 for Ł70, or you could just get an Elite instead (Like I did).
5 minutes really is nothing but if this is the norm then really it totally goes against everything games consoles are all about I.E stick the game in and play it instantly without having to worry about load or install times.
I'm sure everyone expected this so why the fuss? It's just because PS3 uses a first gen Blu-Ray drive with a slow read speed, hence the HDD install's. I'm getting the 360 version so no big deal for me but I feel sorry for the 40GB PS3 owners whose HDD's must surely be filling up with each game they play...

its already happened with burnout paradise. that requires a HDD to run online and i think it also doesn't play offline without one either
Why are you all going on about something that is not definate?
Can you not wait for confirmation before starting this stupid fanboy crap.
Worst of all, the information you all seem to have is based on an article that was bogus! A 5 minute install who cares.
Pop up on the 360? b******s. It was the lead console. It will load most things into memory and use the HDD as a cache like it does every other game (unless you don't have an HDD!)
Well i guess this just shows how many of you came from the days of tape.....YES you heard me right we use to have to load games from a tape recorder, or type them in from the centre pages of CVG magazine. Both of which took far more than 5 Mins.....bloody wusses the lot of ya
i think everyone believes that the 360 version is getting an (optional) install. its not just made up.
and clearly if u dont install it wont perform as good. be that pop-in, draw distance whatever.. could be to ease off on heavy cd streaming all the time.

That's strange. Here's me thinking this article is primarily about the PS3 and a Rockstar game. Who would've known that I was wrong and it is in fact all about Microsoft
Relax a bit. There's more to life than sitting on a computer throwing hissy fits at people you don't know. There's a big wide world out there, go see some of it.
I'm not aiming this towards one person in particular. It's to all those who defy logic and obsessively favour one system over another.
Different people... different wants/needs. No one system is better than another, they're just different.

Everyone believes, maybe, but who knows?
Just what I was thinking. Everything so far is based on rumours and chinese whispers. Once the game's out we'll know for sure.
Not that I'll give a crap by then cos I'll be playing it rather than worrying about whether my version is slightly better or slightly worse than anyone elses.
Jesus its just a bastard fake article, wow a 5 - 10 min install means you have to wait 5 - 10 mins! Its f**k all time! Go take a shower you sweaty bastards!
360: Wow install or no install? I really cant see it changing the game much at all! I bet you wouldnt be able to tell the difference. It wont effect gameplay!!!!
Metal Gear 50 gig install? f**k its like bastard chinese whispers! the 50 will be 50 GB or compressed Data contained within the Disk! I cant see the install been any longer than 20 mins! Once again go take a shower - it only install's once!!!!
There not FORCEING you to install ANYTHING, its your choice to press the install option! Dont want to install? DONT buy the game! Isnt it simple?
For all you Fan buddies out there;
XBox360: Haaaaaaa at least i can play from 12.00AM Midnight unlike your sorry bottoms waiting till 12:10AM Haaaaaaaaaa!
PS3: Hahaha Ps3 Rulez! Zero Pop-Up for me and better yet no looking for batterys after a few hours play hahaha!
So that's the way its gonna be with the PS3, every game will require an install now?, its officially 1982.. Title screen & flashing loading bars next!!!.. how about putting games on 90 minute TDK tapes!.. cant believe console gaming is going backwards & every ones ok with that?, its not the time that f**ks me off, its the fact the 360 one works perfectly (probably better) & needs no install, straight out the box in the drive & your off!, PS3, Next gen hardware?.... fancy f**king, media player if u ask me.
how much can u get for a second hand 40gb PS3 on Ebay?
Wat serious gamer wouldnt have bought the 360 without a HD?? It'll just be those unlucky souls who got a cheap one for their Christmas off their parents!
like someone else said thats 5mins to read the map, or flick through the soundtrack or have a read of the extra bits n bobs in the special edition to realise that i should of saved some money and just got a normal copy.

No not a big deal - but i dont know im starting to feel a lil sorry for the NONE techy ppl with the 40 GB - im sure there drives are starting to fill up now :

who cares about installing? its they f***ys who delete messages off xmb as they come in, thinking they are saving precious space - obscessed with how much gig they have left. chances are if u never deleted anything, and installed every game that needs it (which ISNT them all), get a rake of demos, all the DLC, u will probably never fill up the hard drive.
and if it does, just delete some ying off it that u dont need anymore and stop hoarding pish. easy. and if u swap a game away or something, delete it off the hard drive - it will be like it was never there! and u probably get back the time u spent installing it, with quicker load screens everytime u play it. its like people are stubborn to install a game BECAUSE it takes up space. it can be un-done.
Sorry, my mistake, i thought i'd be spending my time playing games on the PS3, not managing my hard disk space constantly!?...on the 360 i can play up to 10 games in 1 week at times, if i have to keep deleting & installing then that's gonna f**k me right off. Yer i can BUY another HDD & install it myself but why the f**k should i have to?, if Sony wasn't so obsessed with shoehorning Blu-ray into our homes & concentrated on making the best Games console, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.
So that's the way its gonna be with the PS3, every game will require an install now?, its officially 1982.. Title screen & flashing loading bars next!!!.. cant believe console gaming is going backwards & every ones ok with that?
As long as it's just a once off, 5min install then I don't think it'll be a problem for most people, especially not for a game on the scale of GTAIV with 'allegedly' no loading between areas.
...but you have got a point when it comes to games like DMC - 20min install time? f*ck right off. That does indeed hark back to the days of the C64 (press play on the tape and then come back in 30mins to see if you can play a game before it crashes ). Again, not so bad if it's just a one-off thing, but if every game ends up needing a sizeable install then your hard drive won't go far.

i have more than 10 games for my ps3 and have over 40GB on the hard drive left (i also have warhawk, GT5p and a good few demos on there). more than half of the ps3 games dont even need an install.. u dont need to manage any hard drive, unless u are a tidy freak or filled the hard up with absolute pish.
the 360 owners that were quick to laugh at ps3 having to install now are delighted they can install this. wouldnt want to have the 360 version with no hard drive, it obviously gonna be worse without it. stupid desicion my MS not to have a HD on each 360.
agreed. its a way for M$ to fleece money out of stupid people who go and buy the arcade pack only to find out they cant go online with most games and have to go out and spend a ridiculious amount of money on an official M$ harddrive.
Last time I checked Rockstar were not part of microsoft.......
5mins is not too bad but it is worrying that more and more games are going down this route, before too long you will have to start uninstalling games in order to play new ones and that would be stupid on a console.
never said they were. its microsoft that i'm talking about. at no point do i or vercetti mention rockstar in this post.
You are suggesting that microsoft have somehow engineered the situation to get people to go out and purchase hard drives.

the oxm review didn't mention any thing about an install or any pop up bugs and who the f**k cares at the end of the day it's GTA and i would install the whole bloody thing in binary by hand if i had to lol
For all you Fan buddies out there;
XBox360: Haaaaaaa at least i can play from 12.00AM Midnight unlike your sorry bottoms waiting till 12:10AM Haaaaaaaaaa!
PS3: Hahaha Ps3 Rulez! Zero Pop-Up for me and better yet no looking for batterys after a few hours play hahaha!
Wow, I didn't even understand most of that - must be over my head...
The speculation over MGS4 needing a massive install is just a point for discussion - could future, big PS3 titles need this much HDD space? (even if it's not the case for MGS4).
I think most people on these boards would disagree with you about the forced installation. If you want to play the game on PS3 you have to install some data on your HDD - not buying the game isn't such a great 'choice'.
I wish I could respond to your other points but I literally have no idea what you're going on about. To me, the GTAIV install is no big plus or minus for either the 360 or PS3 version of the game. And if anything, it shows that future PS3 games are unlikely to need massive installs - GTAIV is one of the biggest games out there. It'll probably just be lazy multi-platform coding at houses like Konami that feel a 20min install time is OK for DMC...
Do they ever listen to the customers? I want the option to choose. Im getting the XBOX360 now!
On a sidenote, i read somewhere that Sega has mad an optional install for one of there resent games for PS3. Thats evidence of the other studios pushing HDD installs being lazy.
As long as it's just a once off, 5min install then I don't think it'll be a problem for most people,
Take a step back and look at the bigger picture for a minute. The problem here isn't GTA4, but this install business has issues, especially for PS3 owners with small HDD's.
What happens in 12 months time when games are installing more data onto the HDD? You can only have 4 or 5 games installed - are you then going to be happy when you have mates around or fancy playing a game that you haven't been on for a while?
"Ah hang on, just need to uninstall , so we can play . It'll be 10-15 mins though"
"Nah, it's OK I just wanted to play a game, not f***y around watching you mess around and then wait for the game to load"
Seriously, the route this is going you might as well buy a PC.

I agree, but like someone has already stated, Sony were more interested in getting Blu-Ray into as many homes as possible rather than focusing on making a great gaming console. It was a double edged sword really. On one hand they have won the format war with Blu-Ray and yet on the other the PS3 is crippled as a gaming console and owners find themselves in these sort of situations where it's essentially becoming a PC with stuff like HDD install's, keyboard and mouse etc...
You're absolutely correct...but why didn't Sony allow game devs to use DVD's for games that don't require the capacity of BR?
This would mean that it sidesteps the problems of the 2 x BR drive which isn't fast enough and is causing most of the streaming problems.
99% of PS3 games aren't justified to require BR as we all know they are well under the capacity of a dual layer DVD. More often than not, games that are over the capacity of DVD are just padded out or have textures duplicated.
Originally i was gonna get this for my ps3, but in the end i preordered it for my xbox 360, because rockstar said that you would get the better experience from the xbox version. I don't really mind the install times either way i've still got loads of room on both my hard drives.

This has been my point in many of my previous posts about mandatory installs. Happy to se that more people are thinking in longer terms. And for people that dont get our point, whats it to you if we get optional installs? That would please everybody. So lets do that then SHALL WE!
come on this is nothing at all! Im still getting it on my ps3 because ive always played gta on a playstation control pad and thats the only reason. And alot of you are making out that every ps3 game needs an install....why? i can only think of four maybe five. Have some of you ps3 bashers actually played a ps3?
A five minute install wouldn't bother me but really in this day and age this shouldn't be happening.
so dont install it on your xbox then, and see how u get on... if the space is there, why the f**k not install it for optimal performance?! u would think the space isnt recoverable or something!
Is that not a contradiction, surely the 50gb odd on a blu-ray disc is more than enough space to work with? Uneccesary swearing, wow, your commited.
Bottom line is that an installation should stay in PC gaming.

5 min is no bid deal but how much of the HD does it take up? 5 gig installs for several games can eat up a PS3s hard drive space pretty fast and forget about the little 360 HD. I have yet to hear that a game runs faster on a PS3 with the install but if you want to claim it makes a difference to justify your purchase go ahead.
Am i the only one here who trades games in for other games after im done with them, and the delete the save data giving you hard drive space back? And how come everyone knows this issue is going to be with every ps3 game in the future? you all got crystal balls? And im sure the xbox 360 version is going to be smooth without an install or not!
Who cares, this is only a problem to bottomholes. there you go said it. I'd say spend the time ringing your girl/boy friend and asking how their day was but my guess is you don't have because you explode over stupid littole things.
for everything who agrees with me, kudos to yah all

I agree with you both (I think you may have missed one of my later posts?). I don't think most people will be concerned by a 5min install, but 20min install times for games like DMC set a dangerous precedent;
"The speculation over MGS4 needing a massive (50gig) install is just a point for discussion - could future, big PS3 titles need this much HDD space? (even if it's not the case for MGS4)."
But there is hope if a game as massive as GTAIV can get by with only 5mins worth of data on the HDD. Surely any developers worth their salt can do the same? (hang your head in shame Konami?)
