Batman in new Mortal Kombat - fatalities OUT

And we're not bullsh**ing
Midway has revealed its long talked-up, "re-imagined" Mortal Kombat game... and Batman's in it.

The artwork to the right was leaked to MK fansite Mortal Kombat Online, and is looking very likely to be the first look at Midway's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe game. Our Mike's in Vegas right now at a Midway press orgy, so look out for first-hand reports over the weekend.

How the hell did it happen? We're still scratching our heads, but a report on Kotaku that says the game will feature no fatalities and "little to no blood", explains a few things.

Let's hope the last bit turns out to be rubbish, otherwise it's not really Mortal Kombat anymore, is it?

Where is this artwork that is supposedly "to the right"?

Sounds like they're trying to make Mortal Kombat a serious fighter -- odd considering it was never meant to be in its early iterations.

We'll see.

Mortal Combat without blood & over the top violence is like Mario without the ability to jump?...& what the f**ks Batman doing in it!?... he's way too good to be mixed up with that s**t license.

Without the fatalities it's not exactly "Mortal Kombat", is it? And with superheroes it's not even "Mortal".

I'm wondering if it's because they're scared of the ratings boards these days and are worried that Jack "I'm a f*cking k**b-end" Thompson is going to have a go.

I'd just have added a white-haired lawyer to the game and guaranteed me an assload of sales.

It's more likely to with the DC Comics licensing and them not wanting their characters to have their spines pulled out through their assholes. Quite protective of their characters are DC.
Earthrod on 18 Apr '08
Its can't hurt to have new characters I can't believe people get the bottomhole when this kind of s**t happens, like they did with Vader and Yoda in SC, but I do hope they keep the over the top violence with blood and fatalities.
Be good to see Batman have his head kicked off, spine ripped out, burnt alive etc.

Marvel p**s all over DC anyway!
spooney100 on 18 Apr '08
What a total disappointment. I was expecting so much from the next-gen MK, but a DC comics crossover? Yeuch.

No fatalities? Double yeuch.

Looks like my time with the MK franchise is coming to an end.

Shame, really.
jsb115 on 18 Apr '08
That's the end of Mortal Kombat, then. The only reason to ever play it was the over-the-top violence. Bunging in a licenced character won't paper over the cracks.
Railgun_Sniper on 18 Apr '08
Sorry, haven't had any faith in MK games since they totally ruined MK3 for the Megadrive...

God only knows why DC allowed their licenses to get involved in this - Batman and the like deserve better...

Don't get me wrong, I loved Marvel Vs. Capcom/X-Men Vs. Street Fighter etc - but, I find the whole concept a bit rubbish really....MegaMan vs. Wolverine? - whatever....

MK was always a rather s**t alternative to the likes of other fighters. What it did have though, was lots of blood and excellent fatalities, which was why people played it.

Absolutely, that was the point of it!
It never played as well as the Streetfighter series, it never had the cool combos like Killer Instinct, it didn't have the graphics and style of SoulCalibur. But when a pint of blood sprays out from a punch in the face, you can't complain. Ripping off someone's torso was always going to be cool.

And now it's lost the only thing it had going.
Dajmin on 18 Apr '08
The MK community has been s**tting a brick over this this morning. Personally I think it's an interesting experiment. Time off from the main story arc (if one even exists any more) and adjusting to a new engine whilst having some creative license to do something different might do the team some good.

If this game holds up solid fighting mechanics (I'm hoping a bit Def Jam 2ish but more fluid) then you can guarantee the next "real" MK title might actually be any good.
suchthef00l on 18 Apr '08
not something I expected to see, though the thought of Sub Zero Vs Batman is quite appealing!

That said, I've not thought much of the Mortal Kombat games for a while, MK3-era were the last good ones. Although I'm disappointed at the idea of no fatalities and no blood, I won't be bothered about that if the actual fighting makes for a good game this time around.

Couldnt agree more but I cant see midway really doing this. perhaps they're just testing the water to see what kind of response they get.

The www.worldscollide.com URL doesn't work, it's just an apache test page.
bermudaviper on 18 Apr '08
Haven't enjoyed the MK series since the 3rd one on the Saturn.

The violence was part of the reason for playing it. Nothing like playing against a friend, beating him then finishing him off. Twisted Evil

If this game holds up solid fighting mechanics

There hasn't been a Mortal Kombat that's done that yet so I doubt this will buck the trend. Laughing

I've never really been a DC fan at all. Apart from a few Batman and Impulse issues (can't really count Vertigo and other imprints) I've never really bothered. Their characters are all dull and boring compared to Marvel's roster and the books generally tend to be full of static looking boring artwork. I just can't seem to get attached to DC characters at all.
That, combined with a p**s-poor fighter with it's sole selling point taken out... No thanks.
theideal on 18 Apr '08
WTF! Mortal Kombat is defined by fatalities. You could have a game that was nothing but fatalities and it would still be Mortal Kombat! Still, I guess DC doesn't want Batman's spine torn out... shame though.
mrlister on 18 Apr '08
This would be great news if Mortal Kombat was actually good. Honestly who keeps buying these games?! The same people who still rate Turok perhaps?
Mappman on 18 Apr '08
im not gonna pretent im a big MK fan but it think it would be better for all involed if they stick MK gold on xbox live arcade.

add online multiplay, happy days, job done.

call me a cynic but i think this has

BIG WASTE OF MONEY + DO NOT BUY WRITTEN ALL OVER

IMO of course. I dont want the DC stars in this, no thanks. Marvel vs DC by Capcom that I would buy.

WTF!!!! is damn right!

i was a fan since the 1st ever game right upto the last one armageddon

62!

62 f**kin chrachters where on the last game! it was ridiculous! half of them rip-offs of originals it was so annoying! to top it off they took away there own unique fatalitity? bulls**t! they done this on purpose probably to ween people off what made this series so famous. they knew they where going stale and they though "ok we need somthin to hit hard with this announcement" they come to a agreement with DC and DC drop the bombshell "oh but you not to have any blood or fatalities" they prob dont know what to do now.

It will be a 1 on 1 fighter with crap online gameplay, updated graphics, new fighters from each side, 3 special moves on each charachter, air juggling for 3 punches and blandest and of bland fightin system, give me tekken anyday, this series to me is officially over.
mol_e on 18 Apr '08
might be quite cool i think Razz good old batman finish him!!

CRAZY TALK!!11

If this was officially released i would believe it...

But the picture looks fake, the faces just look cut and pasted onto the background (either that or they need to hire new design people). And as stated by bermudaviper the link doesn't even work.
MightyMoose on 18 Apr '08
batmans ment to be a hero. i cant imagine that he would make someones head explode

mupdan on 18 Apr '08
If it was MK Vs DC Vs Marvel Vs Capcom I'd be more interested but I'll keep an eye on it, it's not as if it would've been that good if it was plain old MK8 in any case, so I'll take it as Tekken Tag had Tekken 4 after and expect MK8 in 2 years time.
FLStyle on 18 Apr '08

Now Mortal Kombat Vs Vertigo, that would have some potential...

V (of V for Vendetta), John Constantine (of Hellblazer), the Corinthian (from Sandman), Jesse Custer and Cassidy (from Preacher). That would rock my world. Plus, no need to reduce the gore factor at all. Smile
ossie on 18 Apr '08
MK with no blood... FFS if thats what I wanted I'd get my snes out!

Don't worry, Mortal Kombat has a stellar gameplay system that isn't in any way dependent on its blood & gore. I mean, the fatalities were a nice bonus, the icing on the cake!

Oh wait....
Dinalfos on 18 Apr '08
Never heard such s**te in my life!

Mortal Kombat as a "get your mates around the tele..sorry plasma!) is f**king awesome...who needs some sad Jap. fighting cat games (apart from the new Soul Calibur!!) when you can do some serious hurt in graphic detail...if they remove the gore, (which i know Boon won't even contemplate for a second!) then it ain't MK anymore!
Tonyb on 18 Apr '08
Well...thanks for ruining mortal kombat you f**kheads!

quite simply brilliant!
leeb1977 on 18 Apr '08
If they make Bats nearly as good at fighting as he is meant to be, then this will be the most broken fighting game of all time.

They should just make a decent DC fighting game and be done with it.
sinister_m1 on 18 Apr '08
Wtf is this crap?

They are destroying MK and turning it into super smash bros melle, granted Super smash is pwnage game.

But MK has a different style, who remembers the old snes days, that game pwned on snes. This is a travesty to MK legacy. f**king batman wtf

Don't you think the smash bros. comparison is a bit over the top? If you look at the fighting scenes in the teaser
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/204831.html
I think it still looks really sinister, even without blood.
And btw: Batman is a really good choice for a fighting game. Looking forward to kick some a$$ with him.
Frogger on 19 Apr '08
Well it started with SC3 and now it's bled into MK, thoughts up a thought that neither developer beleaves in their game's own merits and fanbase anymore. They feel like they have to throw in cameos to make it sell..

At least Marvel Vs Capcon was a actal full game but just throwing the odd character here and there to boost sales surely flags up they're no longer interested in the IPs and just want to cashcow them

From that trailer it looks like theres gonna be more then just Batman from the DC universe in it.

Yeah, I hope for joker (with some weird goodies), flash and lobo.
Frogger on 28 Apr '08
When I first heard about the new MK I was a sceptical. But the Trailer is fantastic. The way SubZero und Batman fights is very stylish and comic like. So I think these both universe can fit together.
I want Mr Freeze (vs. SubZero) and Gorro.
Nikko on 6 May '08
I think that a crossover between these two universes is a good idea.it will be the first time that we will see characters like superman or Batman in such game. play I also heard that the story will be written by some DC Comics guys. Cool Razz
