360's Mass Effect DLC free on PC

Bring Down the Sky available from launch
BioWare is releasing the Bring Down the Sky download content for free for the PC version of Mass Effect.

It'll be available on launch day - May 28 in North America, June 6 in Europe - but you'll need to be a registered BioWare community member to get it.

Bring Down the Sky's already available for the Xbox 360 version of the sci-fi RPG, but it costs £3.40 through Xbox Live Marketplace.

The content is the first in a number of planned downloads for the game that'll expand your Mass Effect experience.

Bring Down the Sky features a new mission on a renegade asteroid which makes up for around 90 minutes of additional gameplay.

A Batarian extremist group has hijacked a mobile asteroid station in the Asgard system, setting it on a collision course with the nearby colony world of Terra Nova. Commander Shepard has to save the millions of innocent civilians before the asteroid hits.

This is bulls**t. I will not be getting anymore of the content packs for Mass Effect. Why should 360 owners have to pay extra for somthing the PC version gets free. Bioware is going to p**s off a lot of 360 owners in the Mass Effect community by this announcement. You want to have a trilogy exclusive to 360 then you charge extra for content free on the PC, pull your head out of your ass before you turn players off of Mass Effect for good.

Olé.

No way were they going charge the PC players, what the hell did you expect? Laughing
palancas7 on 18 Apr '08
I wouldn't say i'm p**sed off.

But to be honest it is a slight kick in the nuts for 360 owners in general. If it was supposed to be exclusive to 360, surely then 360 owners should get the preferential treatment here. It does seem as if bioware is favouring the PC a bit.

However, there is plenty of time for the DLC to become free before then - even as unlikely as that seems.
dremorack on 18 Apr '08
Bioware are a long time PC developer, not an XBox developer. Plenty of people were p**sed off at the move they made to the 360 with Mass Effect. If this is by way of apology, then why not? We've had to wait ages for the game, what's Ł3/4 worth of content? I'm sure most people, if they had the choice, would pay that much to get it 6 months earlier.

Plus, DLC has been largely unsuccessful on the PC. And rightly so. Why should we have to pay for content that should've been in there in the first place?
ArchieUK on 18 Apr '08
Hahaha at 360 owners moaning and groaning about having to pay, you get your console cheap, M$ are the ones that are charging most of the cost of downloadable content( Epic wanted extra GoW maps to be free, M$ was having none of it ). Get over it!!!!!!, you want free content? get a PC, you want cheap hardware and to pay for most of whats free on the PC stick with the console

Great news anyway i must say, cant wait for this
lmimmfn on 18 Apr '08
hmm seems unlikely that a pirate copy would be able to register, this seems like a good way to tackle piracy to me. Register and get some stuff for free.

I was probably gonna buy it again for PC anyway so no loss for me.
themeteor on 18 Apr '08
Guys I had to laugh at this. Theres no way PC gamers would pay 5 odd quid for a hand full of content (excluding the sims of course Wink We are used to free updates, Unreal, Quake, Crysis and many other games get maps and decent updates released for free.
This is Bioware knowing their market, seriously, I have a PS 3 and am stunned at the crap they are putting a Ł4 price tag on, Warhawk is a prime example. I buy the game, thats enough.
Still I think that after our wait, its fair enough

DLC is one of the things I hate most about this generation of consoles.

It should all be free as a way of thanking the community for purchasing their games. Not a way of charging you for an after thought or stuff they couldn't be bottomd to add in the first place.
SoulChimera on 18 Apr '08
Isn't it Microsoft who charges for the use of marketplace DLC and thats why Bioware have to charge on xbox and not pc? Atleast thats what I thought
lyrael on 18 Apr '08
Yeah, I think how much we pay is down to Microsoft and Sony.

I'm not sure where the money goes though. Is it all to Microsoft and Sony or do the developers have a share too?

Whatever the case, it should be free.

Took the words straight out of my mouth. It's crappy

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CHARGE FOR DLC ON THE PC. PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS TORRENT. YOU BOUGHT A CONSOLE, ITS YOUR PROBLEM. DEAL WITH IT.

Exactly, M$ and sony get their cash back on the fact that games are more expensive and with downloadable content. EA tried it with the BF2 extortion packs on the PC and failed miserably. You pay for your 'cheap' sold below cost hardware in the long run
lmimmfn on 19 Apr '08
actually Bioware have had some succes with pay-for-play DLC packs for Neverwinter Nights, they need online verification to work i believe, but judging from the content present in the Mass Effect DLC, the NWN packs were a lot more for your money's worth.

Just a smart marketing move by Bioware basically, the next content packs will probably be payed, just like the xbox 360 version.

if you want the dlc in the final game then it would be delayed by 3-4 months probably, you seem to forget that it takes time to do things. the mass effect dlc was worked on after the game shipped so how would it have made the final game on time?

You really believe that? Okay, that's true of some content, but how do you explain content that's already in the game, but just needs to be unlocked? And most DLC is far from worth the money, adding small features and levels that if you consider the whole game as being made up of these small chunks, the cost would be hundreds of pounds just for a game. DLC is pure greed on the side of the publishers. Valve release free content, why can't other developers?
ArchieUK on 19 Apr '08
Well, console owners (I am one) only need to remember that they can live without DLC, and that they are dealing with greedy corporations to get what they like (games). A bit like buying drugs: you like them, you want them, you get them, but you know the dealer is usually an asshole. And hopefully, you behave accordingly.

Glad to hear this as I was disappointed the game itself wasn't going to include it the last we heard, but I still think it should be incorporated on to the disc we'll be getting straight away.

as far as i am aware its only MS who charge for dlc not the devs themselves, in theory valve could charge for dlc through steam but i doubt they will.

suggesting dlc is over priced might be fair but as with everything else in the would the more you buy the cheaper it gets, hence why a full game isnt so expensive.

to be honest, dlc is extra content not content pulled from the final game and if you dont want it you dont have to get it. the dlc in mass effect is good but certainly not essential.

Which changes none of the fact that you, as a 360 owner, are being openly screwed. 360 owners pay for content that PC gamers get for free?? Just where is the logic or fairness in that?

If I were online with a 360, I'd be fuming, and certainly down on MS like a ton of bricks!
dodgy1 on 21 Apr '08
For those of you that say that PC would never have had paid for DLC, I'd like to point out TESIVSurprisedblivion, which had several paid for plug ins, for both PC and Xbox. Exactly what makes Mass Effect different?

Basically, Xbox owners are getting screwed, plain and simple. At the very least, the DLC should become free for the Xbox once its out for PC - so you paid to get it early (much like the map packs).

This is such a jip - Microsoft are w****rs.
_Marty_ on 24 Apr '08
The oblivion content was pay for download yes but we also got it free with the disk in the expansions.

as for bioware not charging pc owners i half expected it bioware has always favored the PC much like others favor a console.

its a kick in the nuts because you dont get it for free on the 360 either buy a pc, deal with it, dont buy the new content your not being forced to especially since its a single player game.
