A small number of PlayStation owners have reported problems with running Grand Theft Auto IV on their consoles, claiming the game keeps freezing.
"I got home from the midnight release with my copy of GTA IV Collectors Edition unpacked it live on the feed installed and guess what, it froze!" said Matt Griffin on his blog PlayStation Network Home. "I tried a couple more times and it even have reinstalled 3 times, it still keeps freezing."
Similar problems are being reported on gaming sites, including the official US PlayStation forums. The issues first appeared to be specific to 60GB launch units, but reports have since included 20GB launch and 60GB non-launch consoles.
A handful of Xbox 360 consoles have also allegedly locked up, but the problem doesn't seem as widespread as the PlayStation version.
Which, to be perfectly clear, appears to be negligible relative to how many copies have been sold in the last ten hours.
For the record, we personally haven't encountered a problem with Grand Theft Auto IV yet. Is anyone else suffering?
WARNING!! Chances of fan-boy Sh*tstorm are high! Everyone with an IQ over 30 is advised to take cover!!
I'd almost suggest that that is rightly so too. As a LOT of PS3 owners rahhed on about how GTA IV would cause the RROD - and now it's f**king up their console instead.
I played it for 40 mins before work, this morning. No problems as yet. I'll see tonight when I give it a proper go. I doubt that I will have a problem, unless it is a issue with the game itself.
There will always be the unlucky few.
Can't say that I was over-impressed graphically speaking. Anybody else reckon that it is a bit blurry? I'm using a 27" Samsung HD TV, just so you know.
Maybe I should set my telly to 720p, rather than 1080i? I've heard that the game upscales.
Started playing it at 12:45 after waiting for ages for it to install. played it till 9:30 this morning with no problems so far, only to be dragged away by work but my ps3 is the 40gb model and only a week old so well have to wait and see. but this game rocks!! Anyone been bowling with their sixaxis yet??

Tit for tat, matey. You just know that reports of rrod's are going to come flooding through. Best to keep schtum.
Personally, I am more disappointed by the blurry graphics than anything else. Screenshots do not tell a true tale. And if the PS3 version is supposed to look a smidgeon better than 360, then I would hate to see that version.
If any rabid X360 fanboys are around at this time, I'd be extremely grateful if you could trawl through the last two weeks' GTAIV comments on here, and quote every single PS3 fanboy who boasted that they'd be getting the more reliable gaming experience.
It might take a while, as there were a fair few of them...

1080i is generally perceived as being good for films, best to have games in 720P.
I would rather have a full 720 lines displayed all the time, than have 540 lines interlaced.

thing is tho mark GTA games have never been amazing graphically so you have to just accept the graphics on this game wont be great also, the animation from what ive seen on the cutscenes still looks quite thunderbirds-esque as well....
not played yet..my commute to work every day means i have to leave before the sodding postman comes. but yeah...anyone fancy some pvp carnage, add me- psn ID: zell71
not only like you guys i had to leave for work today as my fingers itch more and more i now worry about my original 60gb (1st batch direct from sony headquaters) lettin me down on this game i hope to god that isnt the case! either way i shall let you guys know!
anyway go ahead add me lads (PS3: "Mol_e" , i will be more than happy to join in on the carnage! wether be today or tomorrow.)
* wonder if you can drunken bowl? thatd would be a true experience on sixaxis!
with a game of this scale & ambition your bound to get a few bugs, nothing that an update probably cant fix, its not perfect & shouldnt happen but hey thats modern gaming. just sucks if your not online to get that patch?...

The PS3 has a lot of extra 'blur' effects added (theres a post at eurogamer about the PS3 version only running at 630p and upscaling, which is absolutely terrible) - the 360 has more jaggies, but is much crisper.

If that is the case (?), then why did IGN say the PS3 version looked sharper?
What did I say on here for that past 4 days? its over hyped not yet completed and still needs alot of work. I didnt have it freeze on my ps3 but it just feels unfinished. And dumb ass mags and reviewers still given it the highest score. Some people are so easily sucked in by big names its sickening. They probably got sucked off if they give good scores coz I'm sure by now some have played it and feels the same thing. I say they should recall gta4 and finish it ffs
Played a few hours (10-15 maybe) and didnt have any problems. PAL PS3, 60 GB. Initially I thought it crashed, because the "intro" with the drawn pictures cant be canceled and takes like a minute.
I dont even see why people saying it isnt finished. Its the most finished game I see for months and months. I didn't have any bug-problems whatsoever.
I'm not saying that to have a go or start trouble Its just my thoughts on the game. We are all entitled to our own opinions. If people are dumb enough to get sucked in thats their problem. all I know for a sure a game with this much hype should at least be completed before release and this feels not quite there yet.
As stated in the article, you have to take into account the sheer volume of players.
If 2 million consoles have been running for the last 10 hours or so you are going to get some of them conking out anyway. It just seems to me that as most of them will be currently running GTA IV, the odds are that they will go whilst playing GTA IV. I'd guess that the game is hardly to blame.
That is all said with blind optimism as I have to work and then commute before I get to play... Stupid work!

Because reviewers get payed to write reviews. They dont do it for free... Reviews are never to be trusted, especially for such high-profile games.

Don't they just! They move their arms like they've got wooden splints down their sleeves!
Also, does anyone else think the characters' hands are a little bit too large? They remind me of Postman Pat!
On topic: Well I have a 360 version, so it should be okay, but I guess I'll see this evening when I fire it up. Bully crashed on me to the point of returning it angrily to the shop (it was a bit rubbish anyway).
..Did you even read the article? It points to the people who actually do these tests. They're the same people who found out Halo 3 wasnt actually 'full-HD'. The comparison shots speak for themselves. If you want to blindly believe words on a page, thats up to you - but actual frame dumps cant lie.
Now I really hope the PC version will look better. But even if it doesn't we have modders plus we can turn off that blur stuff, if it's really annoying. Maybe they'll do it like BioWare and give all the extra content with the game too.
GTA games never look finished. It's the price they pay for creating such a large playing world. You just have to overlook the little problems and enjoy the vastness.

Ok, so help me out here. If GTA games have subpar graphics and animation, a lacking story, and so-so controls, what draws so many people into them?
I've been playing for just under 4 hours and no problems on the 360 version. Wasn't there supposed to be an optional install for the 360 version? because i haven't seen one and i can't find it on the menu either. Was it just a rumor or am i looking in the wrong place can someone help?

Ive had no problems with my 60GB PS 3 but I do agree with the graphics issue. Im playing on a 40 Samsung at 1080p and as a PC gamer I can tell you it isnt even close to 1080p. Jaggy as hell and everything a few houses in front of you blurs out like nicos blind. Still, it took me a while to appreciate GTA 3 so I will give it more time.
Ok, so help me out here. If GTA games have subpar graphics and animation, a lacking story, and so-so controls, what draws so many people into them?
Violence.
That makes sense then. I guess I don't care for the gta games because I am far more violent in my music and thoughts. So I already have enough violence, gta doesnt do anything for me =)

I agree the screens are too dark for a full comparison, but its quite clear that the PS3 version is blurry while the 360 version is not. Look at the neon sign, and you can see.

If you have ever played The Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion, GTA IV works the same way. If you have a hard drive it uses the HDD to cache a large chunk of information but it does not *install* the game. This shortens load times and often reduces pop-in textures.
What it does is for most of the textures it loads off the disc it also places a copy on the cache portion of the hard drive which is ~6-7gb. When you first enter an area you will get texture pop-in and some loading, but subsequent visits to the same location should have MUCH improved loading.
This cache is mostly wiped clean once you shut the console off.
Xbox has kinda screwed itself with not including a HDD on every console. Even if the Arcade edition had simply a small 6gb cache drive that was only used for caching game data it would vastly improve what developers can do with the games.
This is not to say Blu-ray is "teh pwnzorz!" though. Larger disc space and a more complicated developement platform only mean more time and money to make a game. Not to mention the blu-ray drive on the PS3 has a horrid read time compared to DVD and thus requires the install for many games. Also, Hideo Kojima is an idiot. *flame shield on* MGS4 will kick ass, but saying 50gb isn't enough space is a joke and people will see that when the game is released. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say only 8gb of the disc is game content. The other 42gb will be HD custscenes in 1080p.
50gb of game content would be a monstrous achievement and likely take a decade of work or intense procedurally generated content. The xbox trades prerendered HD video for in-engine cutscenes that use textures the game uses but increases the graphical quality. This cuts space requirements by HUGE amounts.
Anyways, off topic again. I hope not many PS3 owners experience problems. This release is a treat for all gamers. Set the fanboyism aside and enjoy GTA as a gamer. Good luck!

what drawed me to the very first gta on the ps1 was its absolutley different approach to a game. i was 16 and hadnt played on a console since my mega drive. all of a sudden it seemed like games had grew up with me so i brought a ps1. then i brought gta3 on release day and was once again blown away with how far it had come along on the next gen(dispite the slow sometimes non exsistant scenary draw rates but thats my point. When a game entertains you so much more than any game you played before dose graphics really matter?
P.S. i think the game looks ace anyway and dont understand the gripes

Petty, indeed.
And let me add to your slight chortle a tinged guffaw as well.
and if i remember correctly on gta 4 there was blurring which annoyed me untill i found out how to turn it off. Can you turn it off this time or not. dose anyone know?
On the US PS forum, someone has put a post saying that he was told to 'delete all save data for GTA , once the install had been done...no problems since then' This was the recommendatation from R*
Odly enough, nobody reports the fact that GTA4 is also causing some RROD's.
dont mean to sound a total tool but whats RROD's?
Red Ring Of Death. It's the red circle that indicates that your 360 needs to be sent for repairs. (Usually caused by overheating)
oh so it dosnt effect the ps3 then? thats what always put me off the 360 it always seems to happen just after the warranty expires. Thanks for the info

Actually a fanboy is someone who defends the console they own, no matter what. I am a 360 owner.
Yes, with comments such as:
Played it all night on my 150GB PS3. Not a single problem.
(Why do I feel that these stories are started by Microsoft)
how could I have ever made that mistake?
Still, posting a single forum link to somebody complaining that they're unlucky enough to get a RROD just after GTA-IV arrives, then claiming that "nobody reports the fact that GTA4 is also causing some RROD's" is slightly disingenuous, to say the least.

Just because I also own a PS3 does not mean that I can't own a 360 too LOL
And only a handful of people have reported PS3 problems with GTA4 (out of millions LOL). But suddenly that means that there is a problem with the PS3 version, give me a break. I was using my RROD link to prove that there are also 360 owners having the same problem.
I think the problems (on 360 or PS3) tend to show themselves simply because of the number of systems which will be used at the time of such a big release. Consoles which normally gather dust or are only on for a few hours a week are suddenly being put through thier paces and so are showing an already present fault. It happened on the 360 with Halo 3, it's happening on both systems with GTA 4 and it's probably going to happen on PS3 when Metal Gear is released.
It's a shame but I guess all us 360 & PS3 owners can do is keep playing and keep our fingers crossed.

its just the amount u can do in the game and if u actually read the review u would know that the story is supposed 2 b good and the controls tight as ever
and 4 the freezing thing. it kinda reminds me abt tht assassins creed story where sum pepls ps3 froze, i never had tht problem, theres just some unlucky pepl out there.
1 thing i cant believe is how the oxford street store didnt open on midnight (freakin oxford sreet!!!!) so i couldnt pickup my preorder anywhere else and every1 was sold out so i have 2 go pick it up later 2day. thats gay
I'm quite amazed some people have managed to clock up 10 to 15 hours on a game that has been out for just under 16 hours. Thats quite something is that!

I wouldn't read too much into a few failures. I'll bet a lot of the ps3's out there were bought with or shortly before this game came. PS3 is a solid bit of kit.
I cant remember the guy who asked why people play GTA, but for me the reason is the entertainment. I really enjoy how the games vary in tasks and stories. I also feel for me that a lot of the music also played a great part of the game as well, especially if you look at Vice city. The games are enormous to play to 100%, and it’s a great sense of achievement to do so without cheating. It can be very frustrating at times, but also great fun.
It combines elements of games, like racing games, shooting games, and exploration. The graphics are not always the best, but it’s the overall package. This all together along with the comedy thrown in the stories/Radio stations just makes it really fun, I cant wait to play GTA IV.
The PS3 has a lot of extra 'blur' effects added (theres a post at eurogamer about the PS3 version only running at 630p and upscaling, which is absolutely terrible) - the 360 has more jaggies, but is much crisper.
What a load of s**te! The biggest game on 360 (Halo 3) runs in upscaled 640p so how can you knock a game of GTA's scale for doing it - if it's true at all, which I'm seriously doubtful of! Also, if the 360 is crisper but with more jaggies then those jaggies will be much more apparent - think NES games in HD. Just accept that the PS3 version is minutely better. Only minutely but definitely.
on the 360 playing gta iv for the first time. freezes up when im buying new clothes looking at glasses. total freeze up. turn off the wireless controller by taking out the battery and the 360 still says its connected. damn..
Also try telling the sorry XBox and Playstation owners who aren't playing the game which version is better. What use is having a 'superior' version when you can't play it.

I'd take a game outputting in native 720p than upscaled, to be honest. There have been quite a few cross platform games which have ran in different resolutions on each console - i think one of the Guitar Hero games ran sub-720p on the PS3 also. I prefer to see detail (regardless of FSAA or not), opposed to blurring. Also, before you start to doubt the fact the PS3 version of GTA may be upscaled - this news is coming from the same people who actually discovered that Halo 3 wasn't true 720p - it's all a matter of counting pixels from a framebuffer.
It seems to be another case of the PS3 'vaseline' effect in GTA, the same one which plagued (or graced, whichever way you look at it) Portal.
Sounds very much like this freezing problem is a HDD fragmentation issue, only happening to those who download and delete a lot of content.
Wow! i'm amazed at all these people having problems with gta iv. I've been playing 8 hours straight now without a single crash or problem (this is the 360 version by the way). Also I don't have a problem with the blurry background. Love this game by way.
I have been playing the 360 version for about 3 hours now, no problems at all. I'm playing it on a Standard Def. 28inch Hitachi and so I can forgive the lack of shine due to no HD quality, but what I am annoyed to find is that the shadows cast on the roads etc. are quite spazzy (great word - I guess I mean they shimmer way too much). It's probably just the TV itself but the game looks a little devoid of colour except during early morning on a clear day...rain and thunderstorms are excellent but obviously the atmosphere takes away from noticing problems with the graphics.
All in all, a much less-arcadey incarnation than previous installments. Cars handle quite recklessly and are very sensitive, especially with handbrake. Some people are saying that the cops are very tough...they are.
First thing I recommend is getting into a fist fight with a homeless dude, that will show you quite nicely how the feel of the game has been developed and enhanced. So much to do, I just watched one of the channels on TV for about 20 mins and was chuckling merrily throughout.
I'm not saying that to have a go or start trouble Its just my thoughts on the game. We are all entitled to our own opinions. You sure you're not trying to be just a little bit controversial ?
whats controversial??? i agree with the guy to an extent to be honest, i dont think its crap by any means, its a 'good' franchise, just not a 'great' franchise, i will deffo be getting it but theres more important things i can think of at the mo, wont be trading any games to get it either, just waiting til i get paid (whereas before ive traded games in if im desperate for a game), my 2 mates have it and ive asked what they thought and they said its good and theyre having fun but its by no means breaking any boundries that other games have broke...

people like to wonder about round causing mayhem and blowing things up... like ive said before the animation is thunderbirds-esque in the cutscenes, someone else wrote it looks like they have splints down their arms when theyre waiving them about as well which is pretty close to the mark...
I cant play online, i played one free roam with 2 of my friends then it froze trying to join another game by my friend and now i cant get on muiltplayer at all. Anyone know whats going on?

Interesting. From the responses I read, it seems that everyone like they hybrid nature of the game, from being a shooter to a racer to an action adventure etc.. Its like having your Big Mac, fried chicken, quesadillas and an order of fish n chips all mashed into one hybrid food and served on a plate.
As a game dev, I've wondered what draws people to the game besides just sheer violence. Like True Crime: Streets of LA was similar, but didn't have nearly the fanbase that GTA games do. Also, I was shocked to see IGN give GTA4 a 10, especially since a sequel game never by sheer nature, gets a 10.
So my next question is an honest one. For those who have played this game, do you think it deserves the perfect score it got on IGN? Why or why not?

same scenario as why halo3 got the marks it got across the board (although i like halo and still play it online, its not worth the score it got for the simple reason the campaign was sub-standard but i still play online loads), reason it got this score was pure hype consumption.... i can honestly say that at least 50% of the people who have it right now will not be playing it in 30 days time because the 'next game' has come along.... its not a classic, sorry to burst peoples bubbles.... the entire campaign is just made up of mini games (like so many people complain about the wii having)..... that said my mate has said he will lend it me after he's finished it and i will play until bored of it, wether i finish it or not depends when i get bored of it... oh, so no, it doesnt deserve the score it got. (neither does it deserve a score higher before the chavs try to be clever and say it deserves more). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj4JAhvJnqc if you watch the clip they have the animation on the arms just right in the cutscenes.... and it just about sums up the franchise...

well what do u know, went down like a lead balloon, niko had only just got off the boat and it freezes, nothing, caput, nada! wtf!!! why must they do this to me!
GTA games never look finished. It's the price they pay for creating such a large playing world. You just have to overlook the little problems and enjoy the vastness.
Ok, so help me out here. If GTA games have subpar graphics and animation, a lacking story, and so-so controls, what draws so many people into them?
people like to wonder about round causing mayhem and blowing things up... like ive said before the animation is thunderbirds-esque in the cutscenes, someone else wrote it looks like they have splints down their arms when theyre waiving them about as well which is pretty close to the mark...
I have a 60GB and my game freezes for 2-4 seconds at a time during some cutscenes and while driving usually, it's quite annoying and there's a lot of grief out there about it, hopefully it can be fixed. Oh and posting replies that well mine works fine doesn't help anyone, it's obvious there's a problem out there given it's been out for less than 24hours and people are getting the same problem
I have a 60 gig launch PS3. Mine freezes on the first cutscene or about 5 minutes into the game every time. I've reinstalled the gamedata 3 times, disabled internet (i have up to date firmware), disabled media sharing, dumped the internet cache, and every other fix i've heard people say to try. I exchanged the game, still not working. I can play COD4 and GT5: Prologue just fine.
There is an issue with the game and certain early builds of the PS3.
my copy has frozen once on me.ive got a 60gb,but the main problem ive got, when i try to go online it says im not signed in to the psn network, any one else got the same prob?
I've got a 360 and PS3, i bought the game on the 360 and nicked my cousin's copy on his ps3 to test the two versions.
They are both bloody identicle(run on the same hdtv). I have to be honest, the 360 version does look a tad sharper, but only by a tiny amount. The framerate and everything else is identicle.
If you have both machines, just buy whatever version you can get the cheapest. You're not losing out either way.
If the PS3 had achievements in the game(not the more basic accomplishments), i would have bought it on the PS3 instead(far more quieter machine).

yeah, i got that. weird thing was though when i got it home at 9am, it seemed to sign on fine :S. i just get that "can't connect to game environment" message on the phone

yeah, you're in the same boat as me. Guess I'll probably have to play CoD if things don't stabilise, which is no bad thing
Playing mine on my 40gb PS3 - so far, absolutely fine.
And to any Xbots who stick the knife in I've read quite a few complaints of their 360 going belly up even before GTAIV was released - never mind before the end credits. RROD: Lest We Forget.
I have the 60GB launch model, no problems playing the actual game the only time it locked up was going from online back to the game i'm guessing that's when the servers went belly up as i wasn't able to get back online since.
I have a 60GB launch model (recently upgraded to 120GB). Played the game for about 20 minutes last night, completed the first mission, ran around for a bit and had the 'freeze' problem. Seriously disappointed. Not sure if it was a one-off or not, as I turned it off and went to bed. Will try it out again tonight when I can have a proper session (hopefully not interrupted by crashing).
I have a feeling Lord PS3 and Sbolton will be along at some point today to make some comments.
All this talk about RRoD and this freezing happens. I hope the PC version has none of these probs when launched. I was tempted to pick up a 360 or PS3 copy (whichever I could find) yesterday but I'm gonna wait.

This is EXACTLY why any 'Xbots' might stick the knife in though - because all of those PS3 fanatics can't resist a jibe at the 360 at every opportunity. Most people that bought a 360 (ALL of those that bought one in the last 18 months or so) were well aware of the RRoD issue, but decided to get one anyway. I just wish people could stop the tit for tat BULLs**t by bringing up a consoles problems in EVERY GOD DAMNED THREAD.
Every reader on this site is well aware of all the consoles positives and negatives, it doesn't need to be said every damn hour.

Thanks Headspin. It worries me when the reviewers give a game a 10 or whatever their version of perfect score is. Is the game truly perfect? Are the graphics and animations the best they can possibly? Are the controls the smoothest controls you've ever played in a game? Is the story the most breathtaking story ever? There are certain requirements for a perfect 10, and I fear that blind fanboyism is to blame on GTA4's perfect score. I'm positive that there must be flaws, as no game to date has mastered all the elements.

And as I said in a previous post, no game will EVER be perfect, and by that remit, should never score 10/10. However, I don't believe a 10/10 score represents perfection - should the maximum a game can ever get only be 9/10? (i.e. 'almost perfect')? And if so, why not just score games out of 9?
The problem is, that a score out of 10 leaves no wiggle room at all - if a game is better than a 9/10, yet not perfect, what do you do?
I've got a 360 and ps3...decided to buy it on the ps3 as got more mates with a ps3. game has frozen twice now....once after the multiplayer tutorial and once partly through a mission. have clocked about 6 hours before experiencing freezing. I have a 40GB ps3. When it freezes I have to switch the ps3 off and on again....
played first copy for 2 mins ps3 40gb froze exchanged for another copy froze after an hour and the graphics are very blury and my cooling fans kick in early and are very loud almost as bad as my 360
Hi all havent had any problems with the game freezing up as of yet, but i am having big problems getting it online, even though i am signed in to the ps network. Just keep getting a cannot "connect to provider" message on the phone. anyone else had this issue. Thanks
yep, it's froze twice for me, and once it wouldn't even load. seems okay for now, but i doubt it'll last long. while i'm whinging, the whole game seems too dark, esp. at night () and the car handling isn't fun, it's too realistic. also there seems to be a blurring effect which sucks too. everything else is great. rockstar, be a doll and fix it will you? cheers
