It seems the PS3 version of GTA IV is having a few online issues as hoards of PS3 gamers hit the internet to complain.
According to their rants, dialling up the multiplayer mode on Niko's usually trusty mobile phone keeps them waiting as the game attempts to connect, before giving them a text message that reads: "Cannot connect to game provider, please try again later."
Of all the games to break, it should really not be this one.
Rockstar was unavailable for comment at the time of writing, but is said to be looking into the problem.
I dont think it just the PS3 version. I was trying most of the night last night to connect through XBox Live with no joy! It just kept disconnecting from server or starting a new game with no-one joining.
Although I was kept pretty busy on the singleplayer!
I was on last night for 2-3 hours and didn't have any problem connecting etc. There was a few lag spikes that caused a car to disappear doors not to open and people jumping around but I think that was just common lag at times as on other servers it was fine.
You guys got your ports unblocked? O.o just a temp solution maybe but there will probably need a patch before everyone sees smooth gaming. What do you expect if there is a few million people trying to play (estimate by sales numbers).
I'll bet there will be problems across the board with this - and formats. The servers clearly can't cope with demand. If it continues it clearly won't bode well for the DLC.
i hope so - bloody awful machine (and YES i have one) but on topic I played online at around 1-2pm yesterday and there was no problems whatsoever ON THE 360 version mind you.
I'll be sticking to the single player personally until i get stuck because as soon as i went online i was greeted with a american guy saying f**k you, you mother man non stop - PRAT
Alright guys calm down with the fanboyism. You don't want to start sounding like the Sony defence force that frequent this site... do you?
I'm no fan of Sony (or Microsoft- but I believe the 360 to be the better console), but let's not make this a 50+ thread pointing at the PS3 owners and talking gibberish. eh?
Yes, Rockstar don't want Sony's dirty corporate money those uncaring swines. They're much happier with their new lover Microsoft, who have sweetened them up with their dirty corporate money, oh hang on a minute this is a load of crap, and you're talking crap you muppet. Rockstar are making money from both machines, so why remove one from the equation? To satisfy your fanboyism? That must be it!
with there constant delays previously i wouldnt be surprised they let this happen and fix it later after the release.
i cant really complain the 1st 3 times turnin it on it froze durin the credits for me then eventully worked this was by about 2 in the mornin last night so i just decided to sit back and fall asleep while i had niko watch telly, woke up and it was fine hadnt frozen so it seems to be durin the cutscenes mainly.
i also accidently tried to connect to the multiplayer last night and got that exact message, i see another konami here and expect them to release a statement that "they wernt ready for such busy traffic" well when u expect to sell 9M i think it was that they said surely they should have had sum idea who wanted to go online with it aswell.
preparation is a fading thing in the world of gaming its now a case of release now, fix later.
Seriously though someone underestimated the amount of servers needed. Same thing happened when Halo 3 was launched on the 360 and several PC games over the years.
Obviously Rockstar/Sony underestimated how much resources were needed.
Most games have teething problems when it comes to online play. I would imagine that the Rockstar servers have melted with so many people trying to get online last night. I myself tried, and failed.
I'm not too worried though. The single player game has started to really grow on me. The lighting effects have slowly made me believe that GTA4 looks superb. The rain really came down last night and the atmosphere was perfect. It seems to look better the more I play it, especially as I was initially disappointed. Could that be something to do with the game progressively sending data to the PS3 cache?
Also, I am loving the fighting controls, especially the dodging mechanic. Brilliant.
Anyway, I'll complete the game before I venture properly online. They should have sorted it out in a couple of months.....
EDIT: On a side note, I have played the game for nearly 4 hours now without any freezes. I have a 60gb PS3. Must be lucky, eh?
tried online last night, my assumption was the servers are getting owned. tried again this morning and it was perfect have to say tho....how annoying can the camera be?!its such a pain in the a$$.
Like may people I'm avoiding online all together. Full of too many childish immature pratts - who the f**k wants to mix with gamers like them? I sure as f**k don't!
Has CVG been taking money off microsoft to print all these PS3 crashes stories. Maybe it was inserted into the Ł50 million contract to have the PS3 version f**k up. Surely the 360's have got to have some problems as well. Or is it just not being reported by anyone. Mind u i did play it on mine last night for at least 5 hours and not a single problem arose.
I've read stories about game issues with both formats, its a little odd that the finger gets pointed namely in PS3's direction because my games absolutley fine: before the end of the day I'll bet we'll be reading "360 GTAIV Also Has Issues".
i was playing online yesterday afternoon, then i had problems connecting about 5 onwards, tried again this morning and problem still exists, but after playing a bit of single player, i tried again and i was on, also yesterday while i started to get problems, i was getting game invites from my friends, the server is properly busy.
Last night was fine for me on the 360 got into multiplayer no problem whatsoever and sever seemed stable enough, a few glitches like someone earlier said but nothing to worry about.
I though about getting the PS3 version but online gaming just isnt stable enough as they seem to lack networking ability to get people onto servers quickly and stay connected. If they had dedicated servers like MS there wouldnt be this problem!
Otherwise GTA is a great game, only bad thing I noticed which doesnt effect the game is the shadows look strange, could me my HDTV but I dont think it is.

No you missed the point muppet I didn't say Rockstar intentionally scuppered one version of GTA4 I said "have Rockstar just killed the PS3" which the headline stating faults with the ps3 version may just do. People would have bought a PS3 to play this game, but now that the news is saying that the PS3 version is broken people may avoid the PS3 and instead get a 360 for the game.
Would take more than a half baked game like gta4 to kill peoples interest in ps3 as I've said for Rockstar have released a barely completed game they should be ashamed of themselfs.

Yeah, it is getting a bit tiresome now. I have a 60gb PS3 and after 4 hours play, I have had zero problems, other than being unable to try an online game last night. In fact, I stuggled getting onto PSN last night with a message regarding suspension and that I should try again later.
More importantly, I am really enjoying the single player game. And at least I haven't had to put up with disappearing roads and flying cars?!....
After 20 hours I got my first freeze yesterday (60 GB PS3). It locked up in the middle of a mission. I restarted the console, and fortunately I was able to load my autosave wich was just before I started the mission. A few hours later it froze again, but only for a few seconds.
..... i'd love to put the boot in, but then i'd sound like Nologo, & i'd rather detach my testicles with a rusty spoon than do that!.... so here go *sighs* im sure rockstar will sort out the online servers for the PSN.... put it down to traffic & teething problems.... I on the other hand had a f**king ball on LIVE last night & wouldn't touch the PSN with a long s**tty stick.... ohh Doh!...sorry...

Well my 360 will not connect at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Triad for ages last night and at 5am this moning still no joy!!!!!!
Ths is shocking!!!!!!!
My house mate has a PS3 and his is also having problems but he got on in the end and i have to say his also looks a bit better too. I have noticed flying cars and glitches on the single player mode!!! this is so crap!! why cant they release games that work??????????

You wouldn't be able to touch PSN with a long s**tty stick because it would probably pop-up too late. Ho, and indeed, a ho-de-ho. I am kidding by the way... Just trying to show how pathetic people are beginning to sound. At least I am safe in the knowledge that third world countries will now have happy lives because you had a 'f**king ball on LIVE last night'. Well done.

Making a game like GTA IV ain't like dusting crops boy!, have a little more respect & patience.
I played online yesterday about 2 or 3 and it was fine but I suppose thats before most people would have been playing it. I tried again around midnight last night but couldn't even logon to PSN, virgin had capped me so it was no surprise...gits

As a paying customer for the game and the online service from MS i think i have the right to me a bit meffed dont u?

Why would there "surely" have been problems with the 360 version? I know it is unbelievable but there is a tiny possibility that 1 machine can experience problems that another entirely different machine does not............. Especially as the whole infrastructure is different too!!
c&vg are simply reporting issues with one of the biggest game releases ever and these probelms just happen to be on PS3 at the moment.

Looks like things aren't going too well for Rockstar...
They'll bear that in mind with today's money bath.

I've had no problems at all - having great fun.
And if I see a flying police car, I'll remember it's hardware and liable to glitch seeing as nothing is perfect in this world and you lot are a bunch of weepy 5 year old girls who can't help but moan.
I was having trouble on live I think its kinda picky who is hosting, a few times it said the game doesn't exist, when clearly my friends are sending invites.
I am just sorry to see there is troubles for everyone on both consoles and I hope they sort it out and everyone can play online.

I was on GTA at peak hours yesterday (around 8pm-10pm), and didn't have a single issue (occasional lag if it was an American host) - on the 360 version though.
And those complaining of flying cars and/or disappearing roads. Sounds very much like graphic corruption or your optical drive is dying. It's failing to load the textures for the road quick enough from the disk or the HDD cache.
Your inability to connect may also be because of port forwarding - run the connection test. If your 'NAT' shows 'moderate' or 'strict', that is a problem on your end, rather than a game or Microsoft network issue.
Rockstar were never going to get the online setup perfect at launch; you just can't test to that level of users; give it a week and I'm sure it'll all be sorted - the in game glitches though seem to suggest not enough testing was done (or it was rushed to get it out) which may suggest they could have done more to get the online situation sorted before hand.
But there are clearly problems with both ps3 and 360 and that should be reported - CVG really need to update their headline to reflect this or their credability takes another hit for having a 360 bias.

As i've said i had my 360 on last night for 5 hours with no problems. as people have already said they've had trouble gettin into multiplayer matches on the 360 and reports of flying cars i think that there "surely" has been problems with the 360 version. i just think they seem to be hitting the ps3 version hard just now.

I dont know what your trying to say here. Is it worse to have an occasional glitch or not be able to access online play?
Personally, i think everyone seems to be trying to take pot shots athe the other console because they really believe in the "War of the Consoles."
Just enjoy this game. Any glitches or faults will be fixed and if they arent they wont make a massive difference to the fun that is to be had with R*'s baby.
Everyones a hater just now. No wonder the Daily Mail and other media have a field day with gamers, if they were to lok on this or any other forum they would think that games turn you into a raving loony.

Exactly, no need to turn this into a 360 Vs PS3 thing. We both have the game, it looks good enough on both systems and we both have online.

I missed the point? All you said was "Have Rockstar just killed the ps3?". It was a stupid pointless statement made by a narrow minded fanboy. In all the time I've spent playing GTA IV, I haven't bothered thinking about whether or not it's running better or worse on another system, I was actually enjoying the gaming experience, perhaps you should give that a go as opposed to hoping that Sony fail in the console market, you muppet!

What the heck are we all complaining about?
I am complaining because I have no flying cars! I want flying cars!!!
Yeah, everyone seems to be spitting their dummies out over what are temporary issues. For the love of God, it's only been out a day and a bit! Rockstar will issue an update in time. I'm sick and tired of people on forums whining about framerate, minor glitches, etc. It reminds me of the Princess and the Pea (that's a fairytale not a Nintendo game). Just get on and enjoy what is a great game!

Yeah, it is getting a bit tiresome now. I have a 60gb PS3 and after 4 hours play, I have had zero problems, other than being unable to try an online game last night.
By that rationale, I could argue that there is no problem with the Xbox360 either, as I've been playing mine since Christmas and never had the RRoD.
It's funny how the same people that CONTINUALLY throw muck at the 360 and it's RRoD issue are the same people that are jumping to the PS3s defense and claiming there is no issue at all, it's some sort of conspiracy...

I was only regarding the game, and not general console problems. Put your dummy back in.
I swear to this day that I saw a flying yellow taxi in GTA3. It was kinda hovering along the road as opposed to flying and if I remember rightly it was going along the road around the back of the Yakuza casino tower or whatever that building was.

My dummy's fine - I'm merely trying to point out that this 'console war' is ridiculous. No machine is perfect, and the sooner everyone steps away from the 'my console is better than yours' mentality, the better. Then we can come to this site to actually talk about GAMES (you know, the relevant bit) rather than the, frankly, boring contraptions they are played on...
I played 19 hours straight yesterday and didn't experience a single problem, no stuttering, didn't see much pop-up at all. A couple of those hours were online as well (360 version). I feel genuinely sorry for anyone who had problems playing it 'cos it's an incredible game.
I have found myself missing a lot of stuff from the old games though, nothing that really detracts from the game itself, but stuff like taxi/ambulance/fire truck missions, tanks (at least I haven't seen any on my 6 star rampages) oh and parachutes, I definitely miss parachutes.
Speaking of flying cars, how come there's no cheat for them in this version?
Once again the PS3 is singled out despite the fact that the 360 is also having a few online problems
Ummm...that's not true. There have not been any problems connecting and playing multiplayer matches with the 360 version. Between myself, one of my UK friends that is playing right now online, and my co-worker that I just IMed after an all-night session of GTA IV (lucky bastard took the week off for GTA IV and Iron Man...), they haven't had one single problem getting online and playing with the 360 version.
Seriously--take your PS3 fanboi agnst and direct it towards a more appropriate target instead of making stuff up. Perhaps you should talk to Sony about a pay network service so there's someone other than the developers responsible for server upkeep or Rockstar for a version with a lower resolution than the 360 version.
Sony could have had the console to beat this go around, but they don't because of some serious missteps that they either choose to ignore or not address until people go away. Having a free network without anything in place to ensure connectivity is one of those problems.
you know whats funny about this whoooole thing? we are all arguing about consoles! & its the game that's the problem??... its not really funny, but i thought i'd just point it out.....thats all...

Finally someone with sense! If rockstar come out and say "We weren't prepared for this.." then that sums them up. It's hailed as being the biggest game ever (not my opinion) and they weren't prepared for it?! Not to mention a HUGE lack of testing, flying cars? Connection problems? Freezing games? I can't remember the last time i played a game on a console that froze.

Hmmmm - I didn't play for 19 hours (you must be knackered!), but I thought that I may have unlocked some taxi missions in there....can't say for sure, because I was just continuing with the main story-line, but I'm pretty sure it was (sorry to be a bit vague, but I don't want to put any spoilers up for anyone that hasn't got that far) - I definitely spotted a fire station when I was out and driving in Liberty City too.
I could be wrong, but I'll check it tonight - I really hope the taxi/ambulance etc missions are in there....even without the power-up bonuses, they were good fun.
This is definately fanboy material no matter what perspective you are from. I've been in a 16 player private game on the 360. It connected quick, played fine and we had a good 8 hours on the thing and had no problems.
Meanwhile one of my mates has the PS3 version and is stuck with the single player campaign because of these connection issues. We honestly feel bad for the guy.
Xbox Live has been around 5 years so we wouldn't expect any problems. The PSN hasn't so when software like GTA4 comes out with multiplayer features like these, I don't think anyone could prepare for it properly, even with excess stress testing.
Question is, does this effect which is the definative version of the game?

i tell u one thing i'm really missing from the other games & thats a free camera when your on foot!... i hate the way that when your walking the camera keeps snapping back to the,(excuse the phrase) rear position??.... i like to move the camera myself thankyou!!.......(it s very small niggle, bit like being p**sed off that Jenna Jameson has a bruise on her leg when she strips naked to give you the night of your life)..

I hope you're right about the taxi missions! I'm 99% sure about the fire truck missions though because I actually jacked one yesterday and couldn't get anything to happen. I hope I'm wrong though.
I was awake for 40 hours yesterday, now I'm at work, absolutely knackered, and all I can think of is playing the game lol.

I hope I'm right too - perhaps they are just set-up slightly different this time round?
It could be that you can't just take any taxi/fire engine etc to kick the missions off....OK, maybe I'm clutching at straws there a bit.
I'm curious now, so it'll be the first thing I check when I get back on my 360
The entertainment in some of the clubs is hilarious! Some absolutely brilliant touches to the game. Can't wait to get home and play some more.
I too hope there are the same taxi/ambulance/police etc missions. I'd be surprised if they had been ommited. Still, there is more than enough content to keep us going for yonks. I even beat Michelle at pool last night in a rastafarian pub, and even that was enjoyable. Great stuff.
Oh, got a hand-job in a back-alley for $20 as well. Cool. Won't be getting one off the real missus though if I don't pay her some attention soon!
Well, yet again you wasted your time with a long post. You are a noted 360 fanboy, and a complete fool. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, or so I'm told. In your case the little knowledge you have just makes you look like even more of an idiot. Everything you said was flawed, you are a complete fool, please research the crap you post properly before you inflict it on an unwilling forum.

Eh there def have been some problems on the 360 version. Tried for hours last night and couldnt connect to a single MP game!

Best news I heard about the game so far, they were the most annoyingly tedious missions of all, and used to drive me crazy, especially the police ones without a motorbike!! You have made my day telling me this. They were s**t time fillers!!
yh and is also anyone experiencing longer loading times before starting a match in GTA:IV online, as im on my second copy and uninstalled and installed game data etc. but online loading used to be quick until yesterday no online and if i get it its longer loading and Rockstar ignored my email email me with a answer if you can blade_53@hotmail.co.uk
I sure am glad that this game has now become the highest scoring game in history. Any other game with problems like these would surely have dropped a few points in score... but NOT this hype driven game, no sir!
just look at the title of this, thats been over reacted so much, i was playing the other day and it was that smooth that i was able to get 3 consecutive head shots, all online, some people may have had problems but i have had absolutely none with mine, offline or online.
so yeah, i think the headline was slightly over reacted there, does my head in so bad to see geeks argue about which consoles best, especially when theyre american.
