God of War III goes online

SCEA job site advertises for "online gameplay programmer" to work with God of War team
A job advertisement on Sony Computer Entertainment America's recruitment site has revealed that the God of War team is looking for an "online gameplay programmer." Do the one plus one and you can assume that God of War III is set to feature some sort of online mode.

"Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) Santa Monica is seeking an online gameplay programmer to join the team behind the critically acclaimed AAA titles God of War and God of War II," the ad reads.

The job holder "Designs, develops and maintains the networking portions of game and tools code," and will also have to "interact with gameplay programmers to make existing and new code support desired network functionality (including networking of gameplay state, lobbying, commerce, chat, security, and similar)." Hmmm, interesting.

In our heads, we've no idea how an online God of War would work, or even look like. The ideas we've come with so far (Olympus CTF, Gods 'n Crooks) are rubbish. Let's hope SCEA can think of a better reason to take the series into the multiplayer arena.

Cant see that working unless its some kind of co-op mode. An adversarial mode wouldnt work in God of war, the combat mechanic is far too simple to make it interesting, its would just be button mashing.

You would be right, based on the PS2 and PSP versions. Who is to say that the PS3 version won't have different combat mechanics?

Agree with daedalus. I don't see it working - too frantic and too dull in and of itself because you would just be button mashing, but who knows what they could come up with? Co-op could work, but the action is so frenetic you could run the risk of accidentally killing your partner.

God Of War is a button masher, and for me at least, that's what makes it fun - as a single player game. Slashing dozens of enemies at once is exhilarating when you don't have to worry about complicated moves, or strategy even. I think if the PS3 has different battle mechanics, it might take away what made the other games fun.

some kind of co-op were you have to work together to tear off a giant hydra's head sounds good to me

Downloadable content maybe?

I don't see why God of War would need any online components to it. It's a single player game at heart and any attempts to give it a co-op/multiplayer feel will probably dilute its overall quality.

I think I remember David Jaffe saying they scrapped several ideas to make the existing ones shine brighter. Mr. Jaffe couldn't be more right. Less is more.

Surprised CTF is crap in what ever game its in.

If it's done well and enhances the gameplay experience this could be one of the VERY few games that would make me actually buy a PS3...that and Res 5.

Altho that's not exclusive to PS3 is it?

agreed

i'm surprised that these type of games generally aren't multiplayer tbh

back in the day, final fight/streets of rage etc all used to be multiplayer so i don't see why games like this and devil may cry / ninja gaiden etc can't be multiplayer as well

I cannot wait for this game to come out on the ps3 id say it will be amazing like the 2 on the ps2 and the psp game and with an online mode even better. Very Happy
