A mysterious timer clock has appeared on the official site for Grand Theft Auto 2. Yes, that's right; the ten-year-old game.
The clock on the official site seems to be counting neither up or down (the minutes don't change) but the date 'May 22' is clearly displayed underneath.
Could the long-rumoured Xbox Live Arcade and PSN versions of Grand Theft Auto 1 & 2 be just around the corner then? We can't think of anything else it could be relating to - the game's quite old, after all.
Rockstar's UK office was unfortunately unavailable to comment when we picked up the phone (they're probably playing Cops 'n Crooks), but we'll let you know when the time ticks away.
UPDATE: Rockstar has confirmed to CVG that the countdown is, in fact, really bloody old. Nine years old in fact, and was originally counting down to GTA2's release until it reappeared recently via error. Doh.
The game won't hold any attention not will it. GTA 1 and 2 weren't the best when they were first out, so with people busy on GTAIV this will be no doubt merely another cash in on the GTA series whilst the popularity it high.
It would be cool to play those again, with added achievements to encourage me to play it. But after playing GTA III it was painful playing GTA again. And it's only gonna be worse now that GTAIV's out.
As a cool sideline attraction, then yeah this is a very cool download indeed...i wonder when it will be gracing PSN...**ISP "We need to speed up the Servers**"...***ISP "OK but we need to call in Microsoft"***
***Sony "F**k it we'll persist with a s**t online service and hope MGS doesn't suck TOO much!!"***
Who f**king cares? Just get them on Steam if you absolutely must play old GTA games.
They're not on Steam, they're on the Rockstar Classics website. Steam just links to them.
Sadly I can never get the first one to run properly, it seems to run however fast your system can handle (which on any modern computers seems to be about 3x normal speed) and the frame-rate limiter makes it run too slow to play.
GTA2 would still be good for a laugh. I used to love the fact that it was basically just like Micro Machines 2 Turbo Tournament, if it was was brought up on a council estate.
Plus if they were going to release it on PSN or XBL, would they not have done it a month before GTA IV was released as a pre build up, flog on exercise?
