id confirms Doom 4

FPS sequel in development, id looking for team members
Id Software has announced today that production has begun on DOOM 4, and the developer is "expanding its internal team" to work on the next instalment of the spooky shooter.

"DOOM is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next instalment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software.

"It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."

According to the official blurb, id is looking for "talented, ambitious and passionate individuals" to join the team working on the game. We're assuming development it isn't that far along then.

That's Rage and Doom 4 (plus Quake Zero and mobile games) in development at the tiny developer. Assuming it's using the Rage tech, we should expect it on PS3, 360 and PC simultaneously.

Well I for one am happy to see DOOM4. DOOM 3 had a lot of critics and was not the roller coaster, run and gun ride that the originals were, but I loved it. It still scares the crap out of me now. They really need to vary the environments a bit with the new game. Maybe set it on earth like DOOM 2 was supposed to be. Now that would be excellent!!!

more open locations, and weapons with flashlights please. Dont stress too much about the story line.

ah, this is good news !!!!!

reading between the lines perhaps this is a Doom 2 Hell On Earth remake. the text says "...to bring the next installmemnt to Earth"..so perhaps its 'Doom in the City'.
doomthree on 7 May '08
God I hope so, that'd be cool!

I'm looking forward to this already. Even though it certainly won't be out before 2010...

I loved Doom & Doom 2. I hope Doom 4 will be as good.
spam23 on 7 May '08
Interesting for me that this news should pop up now.

I just recently dusted off my old copy of Doom 3 to give it another go after giving up on it originally (a combination crap PC and frustration with certain aspects of it).

I'll keep an eye on this then....

Doom 3 - s**t first time i played that on the PC i was amazed by the graphics! hopefully they will pull a new engine out for this!

Nah - "Doom & The City".

You get to shoot Sarah Jessica Parker in the face with a shotgun.
RhinoSurprise on 8 May '08
This is quite good news, I was just saying the other day that id have been very quiet recently.
Hopefully the locations will be nicer and more detailed than d3 (with more texture variation on the characters). If it's on Earth hopefully the maps will be a bit more open, ie not another corridor shooter. And hopefully it will be scarier than d3 (cause I wasn't scared at all).

Bring it to EARTH! So it must be a remake of Doom 2, just like Doom 3 was a remake of Doom 1.

Its funny though cos they said there would be no Doom 4, but I dont really care cos id love to see it, a few points though. THe first is that ive lost respect for this company since that abomination came out called the Doom Movie. Second of all, this game better not be like Doom 3 or I wont touch it, dont get me wrong, Doom 3 was a great game, but it could have been a lot better, it was too slow and not enough enemies. Who remembers the catacombes level on Doom 2? posibly my favourite level in any game ever, there are just hundreds of monsters on that level, I really hope it is like Doom 2, with toned down graphis but s**t loads of enemies, otherwise I wont get it, games just arent as good as they used to be.

Quake4 was what Doom3 should have been.

Doom3 was a total disappointment for me, it had a really good atmosphere but i didnt like the way it played at all, hopefully Doom4 will be more to my taste.

Order in which id/Raven should be prioritising their franchises for renewal:

-Hexen/Heretic
-Wolfenstein
-Commander Keen
-Quake
-Doom

Doom III was a joke, only slightly surpassed by the joke of the media treatment it received. Almost straight 9/10s for everyone? What game were they playing?

each to their own... i didnt mind playing through a couple of mediocre vehicle sections in Quake4 as the rest of the game was good old-school FPS blasting action with tons of weapons and monsters.

Well, yes of course that's my opinion. I could preface everything I write with 'In my opinion' but I hate doing that, it seems so terribly unecessary.
The media treatment is less of an opinion though, I still fail to believe that such a contentious game was so universally praised by such a majority of critics (even some who later seemed to hate it).

I really want Doom 4 to go back to the way doom was. With corridors littered wall to wall with zombies and blood, brightly lit, action, fast pased, not slow paced scares, ohh, and funny cacodemons, the cacodemons in Doom 1 and 2 had me in stitches, but NOTHING was funny about the cacodemons in Doom 3. Oh yea, and bring back the arch vile, the spidermastermind and the baron of hell.

What's the point? You might as well go and play the original. The only real problem with Doom 3 was that it failed to bring anything new to the plate. It's also exactly what was wrong with Crysis, it was just Far Cry with better graphics and the ability to chuck stuff at people.

It's nice to see continuity between the Doom games, but you also need something new otherwise the games just become stilted.

id invented the FPS genre, and they're also the best candidate to re-invent it.

id invented the FPS genre...

Again, what?

Kudos to Acheron, there were First Person games before id came along, Phantom Slayer for one. Nevertheless, id have always been at the forefront of it's evolution, that is, until Doom 3, which while being a very good game, didn't bring the radically different feeling to the FPS that Half Life 2 and Far Cry did in the same year. Point being, I'd rather see something new from id than a prettier repeat.
JoWoo on 9 May '08
The thing I liked about Doom 3 (after being hooked on the originals for most of the 1990s) was it's complete lack of pretentiousness. It was never trying to be anything new or original - just a good old run around and shoot everything that moves FPS. If you like that sort of thing then great. If you don't, fair enough. But I loved the atmosphere in it,(something I've felt the Quake series often lacked). It's one major let-down was, as others have mentioned, the repetition of the environments and textures. So if they can sort that out in Doom 4, then I can't wait for it.
Nemesis101 on 10 May '08

They are the ones making it, not me, if they are going to make it, at least do it properly, and FYI, I DO go a play the original, a hell of a lot more than any FPS game out there today, because its 100x more fun, so if they want to bring out Doom 4 which is a re-telling of Doom 2, do it properly and keep the essence of what made it such a great game.
mintydog on 10 May '08

I had never even heard of Phantom Slayer before, but if thats what he was talking about, why didnt he just say it? rather than being a k**b?

Also id like to see something new too, but if they do a good update of Doom 2 that would be great too, but we all know they wont, FPS games just arent much good these days.
mintydog on 10 May '08

I didn't find it particularly k**bbish to know that the fps was invented nearly 20 years before Wolfenstein 3D was released.

I find you k**bbish with your sarky answers rather than telling us about FPS gmaes that came out before Wolf3D.

Either way, im sure many other people dont know about any FPS before Wolf, so id made them popular.

Sarcasm... oh noes... however will you get on in life? Neutral

I don't think it would be constructive of me to search through every post you've made and label the sarcastic remarks. I felt my comments might spark a degree of curiousity in other forumites. If this wasn't the case with you then I am so, so sorry. I'll do better to consider your feelings next time, and try to conform to your hypocritical standards of thread contribution.

I don't think you're a k**b though.
Acheron51 on 12 May '08
if they go the SOF2 route and make an enhanced engine of Doom 3 it will be good, if they make a completely new engine.. even better.

But as much as i love new high performance hardware, lets hope the specs arent quite as high as Doom3 was when it first came out, the FPS still dropped a fair bit even with a 6800 ultra when the game came out.

This time maybe it will be better, not as bad as that rubbish i call crysis though!
