Nintendo big man Shigeru Miyamoto has spoken on the development of the Zelda series, dropping a few anecdotal nuggets like Zelda 64 was almost made in first-person perspective.
"At first when we were developing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, I even proposed using a first-person perspective," he said.
"I thought that the FPS system would be the best way of enabling players to take in the vast terrain of the Hyrule Field. Besides, by not having the player's character on the screen, we can spend more time and machine power on creating enemies and the environments." Which logically makes sense, even if it emotionally makes us wretch in disgust.
Thankfully, the desire to show Link as both a child and adult put an end to Miyamoto's dalliance with the first-person design.
The revelation comes in an interview by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata addressing the development of Link's Crossbow Training. Miyamoto also touches upon the development of the Wii Zapper in the interview and why he chose a Zelda spin-off to launch the peripheral.
After vetoing Mario and Animal Crossing as potential candidates, Miyamoto said: "We figured that Link was the logical choice. Then we argued that it would've been kind of strange for us to give Link a gun, so I proposed a sort of Terminator style story about a time warp from the future, but [the development team] vetoed that idea immediately".
With ideas like those, we wonder how he managed to put together Donkey Kong, let alone Mario 64 and Wii Sports. It's baffling.

It's called brain storming. You'd be amazed at the amount of bulls**t that can be produced by management during a brainstorming session, regardless of the company
Funny stuff, although I like how they cling onto the likes of Zelda and Mario to launch a new product rather than have the ball's to create a new IP in the process.
I want a Sequel to Majora's mask!! Like Link going off to another country/kingdom massive like Hyrule, with the same sort of atmosphere as Majora's mask but with new characters, like no Goron, no Zora, brand new characters/creatures from this new kingdom would be very nice. MAKE IT HAPPEN NINTENDO!! If you guys want a storyline please contact me by email: purometal_30@hotmail.com i would love to do it.

It makes sense to launch it using a familiar IP. People tend to look twice if the character promoting something is one they recognise.
I could see the first person perspective being useful for one to one sword combat, although personally I would prefer it to stay third person. One factor of the Zelda games that makes it so enjoyable is the idea of witnessing Link react with the world around him, and the excellent animation helps too.

That goes for Sony and Microsoft as well, they are full of sequels!
Wouldn't Metroid have made the perfect match? Or Duck Hunt? Rather than shoe-horning Link into it? He'd better have that crossbow in the next game. That "serious departure" one. The one set in the future...
