Blood and guts fans worried about the removal of fatalities in the new Mortal Kombat game can put their fears aside. Or move them slightly off centre at least - "Finish him!" is in.
Ed Boon, co-creator of the series, was quick to clarify the issue. "There was never any statement on our part that fatalities will be gone or that finishing moves will be gone," he said in an interview with GameTap.
"We did acknowledge that we won't be able to do the same kinds of outrageous moves, like tearing someone's head off and the spine being attached to it.
"But there are a lot of assumptions that there will be no blood in the game, that there are no fatalities in the game. It's an assumption that, because the DC characters will be in there, those features will have to be dropped. My response is that, no, we're modifying fatalities."
Modifying fatalities doesn't sound too bad, but we're still concerned. Ed added "I certainly can't speak with authority as to what DC will permit. There will certainly be some limitations. But my intention is that we want to push the envelope of a T-rated game as far as we can without being an M-rated game."
Yeah I'm with you on that one 'ginsin', although MK1 still holds a very special place in my heart, especially the first time I ever played it, which in of all places was a nightclub...beer and fatalities, what a combination!!
Seems to me they've sold out. Using the DC licence but having to tone it down because of that ?
MK doesn't need DC, MK needs blood, gore and fatalities. There's enough generic beat-em ups out there, MK has it's roots in the blood and gore. Ed Boon would do well to remember that.....
Although I fondly remember tying a rope to a steak, throwing it at my brother whilst exclaiming "Get over 'ere!" at the top of my lungs as an 11 year old in 1993.

Quality post mate! I just p**sed myself picturing you doing your Scorpion impression in the back garden...and they say games don't influence children!

You threw tied-up meat at your brother?!
That's it for me, MK is finally completely dead. It's ludicrous, the crossover with DC. And toned down fatalities? Honestly, the gore was the only thing that interested me any more. Oh well, gues I'll have to find another uber-violent gore game to satisfy my bloodlust!
Why don't they just add the teletubbies and finish off their franchise with some style. My interest in MK died after the one on the snes but then again I was drawn to killer instinct which its self got ruined with the sequal.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't it be: "We want to push the envelope of a T-rated game."
For me MK franchise peaked at MK2, after that it was downhill all the way.
Correct on both points. MK2 was the peak, after that the death moves where everyone explodes was just stupid, they had like 3 ribcages! If anything, tone it up, but I wont be getting this game anyway.
I mean, come on! How many ninjaclones do we need in a fighting game!? and lets not forget Mileena / Kitana. Different moves, fair enough, but cloned characters with swapped pallettes just gets on my nerves.
For some pure fans Fatalities were the point in MK episodes. In MK we will have less gore but according to midway they will be more spectacular...so why not. Plus they includ new fighting mechanics(freefall and Klose Kombat). So it could be interesting !!!
