Sony has declared its intentions to feature online games at the forefront of its PlayStation 3 strategy in the future.
Speaking with The Seattle Times, Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley highlighted the importance of online genre.
"I think MMOs are going to be a real strong selling point for the PS3 long term - there's going to be some great ones on the PS3."
"You're not going to find "The Agency" on the [Xbox 360]," he added.
For those unaware, The Agency is a massively multiplayer online shooter currently in development by Sony Online Entertainment for the PS3. So he's right in the literal sense - we don't think Sony will bring The Agency to the 360 any time soon.
But we can't see a reason why something like The Agency couldn't appear on Microsoft's platform, though.
I suppose sony have had experience with mmo's on the PC so there could be a bit of truth in it. Still, the games have to be good first and foremost and at the moment we know very little about any mmo's in development, other than the Agency. Conan on the 360 looks good so saying 360 can't do mmo's is wrong, unless the comment is taken out of context. Probably is.

erm..keyboard & mouse?

u simply cant play mmo with a control pad
I wouldn't know as I have never played an mmo on the PC. If that is the case then I would expect a console mmo to be a watered down affair. Either that or release some first party mouse and keyboard peripherals. There is no reason why both ms and sony couldn't do that.
To say the 360 can't do MMO's because of lack of mouse and keyboard support is ridiculous. Microsoft put no restrictions on this at all, and if a developer wanted to, they could put fairly standard USB support in their game (Final Fantasy added USB keyboard support before the dashboard supported it).
To top it off - Age Of Conan, one of the biggest MMO's in years, which is grabbing the attention of many Warcraft users is coming to the 360.
Either way, MMO's need to stick to PC's. They just wont get enough users on consoles.
The first company to get around the technical issues and get an MMO "right" on a home console will clean up the competition entirely, and Sony do have a hell of lot of swing in that part of the gaming world.
If they do manage to bring the the "Real PC MMO Experience" to the PS3, and MS have nothing waiting in the wings, then the Xbox360's current success will be worth but Jack and s**t, and Jack will probably head straight for the station to get on the first bus out of town...

Sorry to re-quote here but surely APB is getting people excited or is that just me?
Direct Quote from APB Official site:
"APB is arguably one of the largest and most ambitious independent game projects in development worldwide."
I'll Believe it when i see it . this is prob 2 - 3 years from being ready ,if going by their latest track record .Any way I dont give a crack ass about mmo get me KZ2 now not bloody next year you lazy tw@ts
Last I heard, the X360 version of APB had been "indefinitely delayed" until the PC version was out the door, the only definite plans were described as "options for eventual versions on both the Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3"
Given that the PC version's not due until 2009, anything could happen with the X360 version.
On the other hand, there have been rumours flying around that APB might be sold to Rockstar, and re-branded for release as the GTA MMO, which really would kick some butt.
what a pile of crap, look at runescape a very popular MMO and unless you want to chat you only ever use two buttons, it's possible to do it with even 1, well i'm not sure, but i think there's more than 1 button on a ps controller.
Personally i'd love an MMO on PS3, it does seem like an MMO style console to me.
I'd try a good MMO as long as Sony don't charge a crazy price to register it and as long as it doesn't have dwarfs and fecking dragons in it!
I was in Asia for a month and they're MMO mad in Japan and South Korea. They have MMO cafes that you can go into and play your favourite MMO online while you drink coffee.

Ive heard its on track for a 2009 release (when in 2009, who knows) for 360 and PC, indefinite delay (better not, ive been hyped for this game for some time) for the 360?, im not too sure. Ive heard them talking about te 360 version before and havent came across anything to suggest that it been delayed.
I've played Guild Wars on PC, and it'd play just as well with a joypad. Bring on Warhammer PS3/360 AOR.
I suppose voice chat would mostly negate the need for a keyboard?
Oh yes wonderfull, I could just imagine all the goldfarmers spamming in engrish and the crafters shouting off to advertise thier wares. It would be line the destruction of Alderan all over again... millions of voices all crying out at once.
If it makes you feel any more hopeful, I may be just reading too much into the wording of a short news story I read over on Gamespot, and getting the wrong end of the stick.
The bit which stuck out was
While APB had initially been slated to appear for the Xbox 360 and the PC, a Realtime Worlds spokesperson told GameSpot that the PC edition was the developer's priority and will be the first to market. Noting that Crackdown was the only game to fall under the exclusivity contract the studio signed with Microsoft in 2005, the RTW rep said that if it does proceed with console editions of the game, both an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version are on the table.
with the "if" being italicized as the bit which stuck out.
Here's hoping, though, as it looks like it would be the sort of thing that would play much better on a X360 pad than a keyboard.
Whats so great about age of conan anyway? My friend said he played the beta, and it was so buggy and full of memory leaks that he could barely play it. Which to me sounds like something that should have been sorted ages ago.
The agency does look really good by the way, and im looking forward to playing it.
Someone quoted 'Runescape' above for simplified controls...but this is a Java developed game from two guys in their bedroom, it looks like crap even compared to mobile phone games and is about as interesting as Man City at home!
This is yet another vapourware attempt by Sony to "Big-Up!" their console. Same old story since launch, great idea's, no substance! As for the on-line chat thing, as others have said, will never work unless they can implement a friends/guild exclusive filter so the other irritating muppets can be muted...now that's an add-on i would buy for WoW!

Aarrgghh!!!
Never seen that one before, last time I trust IGN (damn you Yanks) for up to date info, they still have it as 360 & PC.
Still, I think the premise of this game along with Realtimes recent history (Crackdown was awesome) this game will eventually come to 360 and by the looks of it PS3 as well, ah well the more the merrier.
I thought Sony said recently they wanted PS3 to be the home of FPS( although when the fanbots were dissing the 360 they said all it was good at/had was FPS). Make up your mind Sony FFS.
Final Fantasy XI, plays better with a game pad and you can have pc, playstation and xbot players in the same party....if you could find a party that is
It may be aging slightly but its still underapreciated for what it is.
I'd have thought Sony would be better concentrating on delivering things they promised, but have yet failed to deliver, from back when the console released rather than add something else to the list of bulls**t claims that won't see light of day for years.

Can you quote a source for these "rumours" as everything I've read still suggests that APB is coming to 360 at the same time, or just after, PC. Realtime Worlds have just received a Ł50m grant so it's hard to see them selling off their most hotly anticipated title.
They even bought back the distribution rights last month so it's definitely still on the cards.
The only problem is that its still SOE making the MMO ,hopefully being controlled by the PS2 may prevent SOE from going belly up but its not the magic wand needed after the many EPIC FAILS and dropping Subs on their PC MMOS.
