A couple of rumours have appeared in the latest issue of US mag Game Informer about Microsoft's future plans for the next Xbox. And there's some good news for Achievement fanboys if this particular rumour does turn out to be true.
Of course we won't know if it's true for a few years yet, it's not like MS would confirm the stories. But those Xbox 360 gamers who pride themselves in having a MASSIVE gamerscore over a car, mortgage, family and cat, should know that all their hard work might not be for nothing.
Yes, as funny as that sounds, Game Informer's rumour section says that MS will have your achievements carry over.
File this one under 'rumour' for the time being but there are at least seven people in the office who said 'awesome' when we told them.
considering MS are rolling out achievements and the Gamertag / Gamercard system across other devices including Windows and the Zune, this sounds like a bit of a no-brainer to me.
Typical! anyone backing the MS console better get used to buying a new console every 4 years!!!
If this is true this will surely back fire as i dont know anyone that would be happy to have to purchase 3 MS consoles in 8 years!
I am currently on my 8th 360 due to the ring of death and i aint going out to pick up another machine for no one.
i agree, quite expensive considering what they did with the original xbox when the 360 was released. Not only that but a lot of folk will only be picking up there 360 now so theyre only getting 2 years out of it
360 was released in 2005, so 2010 is 5 year difference not 4
though I for one wont be getting one at launch after RROD, unless its gobsmackingly amazing. Theres still loads of games i need to play on all 3 consoles

Actually 2010 would make that 5 years not 4, and considering MS replace or fix faulty 360s with no charge whatsoever (as long as its under the 3 year warranty still) and they cover postage then its not expensive at all. How the f**k are you on your 8th 360 in 3 years? You're either lying or you're throwing you're 360 around! I had a launch model which broke down after 2 years and was replaced in just over a week. Most of my mates have 360s and the most one of thems been thru is 3 in the 3 years and he payed nothing to have them fixed. A lot people on here clearly don't know how to milk MS if your 360 breaks down and you're replacing out of your own pocket then you're a mug!
8 360s in a year! I find that very hard to believe unless they were all flashed (chipped) 360s and you got caught out!

Gotta love the current fashion for boasting about how many RROD's they've had.
The funny thing is, though, that most people don't realize that 9/10 RRODs don't just randomly happen, but are actually inadvertently caused by the owner due to varying acts of stupidity involving shutting them in cabinets, or other methods of blocking the ventilation ports.
In short, telling people that you've had more than one RROD is also telling them that you're a n00b who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near anything electrical, and is not something that you should go around shouting about.

Well I am a responsible adult and treat consoles like they are babies. I have been through three 360's. I hardly ever played on them either, maybe just 1 hour a day-ish (All I have time for).
As for the next Xbox. If it works after six months and is quiet, I'll buy it. They are more important to me than BC or Acheivements.
I wonder if the cheater designation would follow too? Seriously tho . If MS wanted a major coup for the nex-gen box they should not only keep the gamerscores but make the new one totally BC and have a "classic" gamerscore as well as the new one that way people will be able to tout their massive scores for the old while allowing new achievment ho's to flourish on the new system. and maybe a total leaderboard type thingy. Of course it will never happen. no console co. ever gives the fans what they really want if they did no one would buy new consoles.
and oh yeah if I were on my 8th (2nd actually) I think I would have given up and went to another format. You must be a masochist
The PSOne was released in 1994 The PsTwo was released in 2000 The PsThree was released in 2005
Having a next gen xbox released in 2010 (the 360 coming out in 2005) doesnt seem unreasonable to me. Espc. given the increasingly rapid move in technology. By then gpu will have moved on by 4 generations. The 360 has 48 shaders (allegely) next gen 480. 8 core destop processers will be out.
I think it's obvious, and logical, that whenever Microsoft release their next system, that it'll be compatible with your existing Gamerstag and everything that goes along with it.
I wish i was, and for the numpty that posted earlier. Of course MS is fixing them do u really think i would be stupid enough to pay for new machines!!!
Maybe its the Uk machines but all my mates have had to have a new machine and my cod4 buddy is on his 7th so i dont think i am a one of guys.......???
There should be a distinction between Achievements earned on the 360 and the new machine to encourage newcomers.
8 Xboxes!!!!! Damn that some s**t luck m8, Iv had mine since launch, my laptop is on top of it, its been dropped on the floor, regularly goes out on trips to my mates smokey dust house, doors have been slammed into it, my 3 year old nephew tries his best to break the thing, not to mention a few beer spilages around it. Still works fine with no problems.

Very well put. Im on my 2nd 360 since launch and dont know anyone who has had more than 3 in that same time.
I may be way off the mark here but either the people who are on their 6 / 7 / 8th consoles, well their either liars or as you put it idiots.
I've finished more games on my 360 than any of my other systems, thanks to achievement points. I seem to feel that I've accomplished something rather than just waste hours playing a game. I'm far from an achievement whore, but think achievements are a simple but brilliant idea.
I'm still on my euro launchday 360 and never had any problems with it. I've had far more trouble with my wii freezing up while playing and ever since the last firmware update for the ps3, while using the webrowser it often freezes up and I have to restart the feckin thing.

The PS3 was released in 2006. The main concern really is over whether MS will continue to support it and manufacturer it when they release their next console, which they didn't with the Xbox. I think they will this time round, but we'll see.
This just being a rumour, given the current trend in the market with PS3 and Wii now outselling it, it wouldn't surprise me if MS tried to jump Sony again and steal some of their market and possibly look more into trying to convince the "casual" and Japanese markets to follow suit, although both would prove very difficult for them.
The typical console life span is 5/6 years. That means we can expect to se another Xbox in 2010/11. The real question is whether Sony will let MS gain a valuable advantage yet again, but in turn, rushing another PS out would essentially admit that PS3 was a failure... Anyway, I think it's a no brainer that gamercards and achievements will be carried over. However, 360 and 720 (lol) achievements will most likley be seperated and not counted as a global total otherwise it would be unfair on new adopters.

LOL,
Well, I roasted my x360 in an oven for three hours at 220. I took it down the field and played rugby with it, where I did a 60 yard drop kick. Then I threw it off a 20 story building down into a main road, where a truck, three cars and a bus ran over it in quick succession. I left it out in my back yard where it got rained on for nearly 10 days.
Are you counting the European delay there? If so, that's not really the release date is it? That's the 'I couldn't buy one at launch coz Sony didn't make enough' date.
Edit: Nope, you're right, it was 06 (07 for us mugs in the UK)
Console lifespans are always 5-6 years, so a new Xbox in 2010 would be very unsurprising. I will be astonished if Sony don't release a new system before their '10-year cycle' for PS3 has ended. You can carry on selling the old system once your new gadget has been released, but that's not the same as your old system remaining at the cutting edge for a decade! If Sony don't release a new console in roughly the same timeframe as MS and Nintendo then they'll start to look old fashioned very quickly.
The original Xbox was poorly supported and had a mediocre games catalogue - most people who came late to the party will simply have bought the 360 instead. The PS2 had a great games catalogue and is significantly cheaper than the next model up (PS3) so I'm not surprised that it still sells. Of course, this will be very different when the Xbox 720 and PS4 are released.

Agreed, I've had 3 x 360's, none of which have had any faults. I got rid of the first one just after launch so that I could cash in on shortages. The second one was chipped and got banned (rightly) from Live, and the third is an Elite that's given me no problems whatsoever.
There are a large number of people who moan about RROD without ever having had one, or if they have, it's the 4 red lights, which is NOT the RROD. It's no longer a reality and is just used as a point scoring exercise for fanboys.
I'll for sure get a new Xbox when it's released only if it will play ALL 360 games. I think the next machine will because MS owns all rights to the hardware which they did not with the original Xbox.
Suddenly Sony's "ten year lifespan" for the PS3 isn't looking quite so clever.
Who are these idiots who demand Backward Compatability? Either keep your old console or get over it. Why would you want to play old games when you could have new?*
Right, I'm off to play GTA II.
* Still have all of my old games machines in full working order right the way back to my Speccy and C64.

Because not everyone has enough room to squeeze all their old machines around a TV every time they want to play an older game. I still have all my old machines, but I'll be damned if I'm going to have the PS2 and Xbox using up space next to the PS3 and X360 when they both play older games (<-managed to grab a 60GB 360, and all my xbox games miraculously work fine on 360)

exactly man, this guy is just an idiot and he cleary kept his 8 xboxes in an oven whilst he played them.
Whenever I hear that someone has had multiple RRODs, I have to wonder what it is they're doing wrong. One or two is understandable, if a little unlucky, but eight?
If MS do plan on launching a new gen console, in the next couple of years, letting people carry over their achievements is a good idea, but they'd need to have something special to up their sleeve to top the 360/PS3.
Personally I'd think it would be quite amusing if the gamerscore didn't carry over.
For some people it is their life's work, endless hours of trying repetitive tasks to unlock a few more achievement points just so they can brag and have a sense of accomplishment.
I've had a 360 since launch day and am quite happy with my 8995 achievement score, it shows that I play the games for enjoyment, as a hobby, a past-time, I have a life outside of the gaming world, I socialise, have a job etc. I don't need some points on a screen to make me feel like I've achieved something in life.
Some people need a serious reality check, I mean what you gonna do carry achievements over to every new Microsoft games console so that in 12 or so consoles time when your obituary is read out at your funeral it'll read; "He was a lazy sod, a benifit scrounger, a drain on society but he at-least he achieved something in his life - a 520000 gamerscore!"
Achievements = no brainer. I wonder if it have 100% backwards compatibility though?
I hope it does have 100% backwards compatibilty so I can play Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc. without the background fill in, much like when I first played Halo 2 on the 360.
If they want achievements to mean something (do they mean anything?) then they should make all games backwards compatible so future whores who only start from the xbox 720 can fill their gamerpoints by playing some absolute classics from this golden generation.

That made me chuckle. Personally I could never compete with those hardcore achievement point junkies so I have been turned off achievement points. Pity really because they are a good idea in theory. I only wish Microsoft could average out the scores so that even newcomers could sit at the top. Mind you, MS are not daft and have probably realised that some gamers will buy any old s**t just for points. Utter madness.
They are a great bit of kit, but horrendeously unreliable. Twice I've sent the console back, it has arrived back to me already broken, other times it has lasted about 2 weeks. Not mistreated in any way. It sits on top of an expensive glass hifi rack, with masses of air gap all around and is never moved.
Would I buy another one. Hell yes. I've also got a PS3 and to be honest it never gets used except as a blu-ray player or while I'm waiting for the 360 to be rapaired again. I do all my gaming on the 360 as in my opinion it has not only a superior game lineup, but also I much prefer the controller, the online service is miles ahead of the psn, and I know far more people with a 360 than a PS3, (so online gaming is more fun). PS3 just tends to gather dust...
What does anyone want another machine for? What's it going to do thats so different? Why are you all thrilled with a similarity? 'Ooh the new machine does what my current one does!' Shouldn't differences justify the machine?

Well for start it will be using technology that is at least 5 years newer. That's a long time in the computing industry. Just think of how processor / gpu speeds have increased on PCs in the last 5 years.

what the F*ck are you on about the PSThree was released in 2005??!! are you a complete moron???!!!
No this is bad news i think they should reset the gamerscore when they do release the new console . Me and my mates have had an ongoing competetion to see who can have the highest score which due to being on my 5th xbox(1 rrod 2 disc drive failures and 1 console that was returned still broken lol) means i have started to lag behind the gits plus ive got 2 kids(just making excuses now ) MICROSOFT RESET THE SCORE ON THE NEW CONSOLE GIVE PEACE A CHANCE

Ł60 came out on the 25th of november 2005 in the states and the 3rd of december 2005 in the uk and europe, its coming up for its 3rd birthday at the end of the year, 2010 is what most people expected in terms of a new console coming out, 5 years ater the one it is replacing, at i would expect the 360 to still be supported for at least another few years after that.
Excatly what problem do you have a with a free repair, free replace system for upto 3 years if your console breaks, sure its a pain, but i will say this try putting your console somewhere cool and not on a carpet or onto of a vcr or dvd player or next to a tv, this excess heat is causing it to break. Ive had mine since launch and it gets played daily and it hasnt broke yet.
