Despite frequent news of Wii's global sales domination, the Xbox 360 has managed to hit the 10 million sales mark in the US ahead of its competition, according to Microsoft.
Reaching the milestone before both the Wii and PS3 in the States should secure the long-term current-gen victory for the 360, MS senior vice president, Don Mattrick, told Reuters.
"History has shown us that the first company to reach ten million in console sales wins the generation battle," stated Mattrick in a statement yesterday. Interesting fact there trivia fans.
NPD figures currently puts Wii on 8.8 million sales (and closing) in the US, while PS3 is sits on 4.1 million.
Wii of course leads in the overall global race, something MS didn't take into account when doing its sums. "Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen. high definition gaming console, Wii excluded," the company clarified to ShackNews when asked how Xbox 360 could lead worldwide with 19 million when the Wii has sold 24.45 million.
We doubt the battle's over yet, although the 360 has a strong Christmas line-up ahead of it, and the Wii has... urm...

Playstation2's installed base now tops 154 million. I'd say all next-gen consoles have a hell of alot of catching up to do to match that. And PS2 still continues to sell!

From the experience I've had working in game shops, a vast proportion of those were bought as replacements for broken units and/or people "upgrading" to the slim PS2. Also a lot of parents were buying them for each child's room because they wouldn't share. Try suggest a GameCube or an Xbox as a second console and they wouldn't know what you were saying.
In conclusion I think that the sales figures are misleading and the amount of houses with a working PS2 is probably less than 100 million.

No, it's current gen just like the PS3 and Xbox 360. That would be the equivalent of saying the PS1 didn't belong in the same generation as the N64 just because it was so underpowered in comparison.
There is only a victor once their competitors stop selling considerably less consoles, eg. Atari Jaguar vs N64 vs Saturn vs PS1, or Gamecube vs Dreamcast vs PS3. And we all know who won those wars!

Stats... 360 has sold 11.8 million in America, but had a 3.3 million head start on PS3 and Wii. Wii is just behind, however, at 11.3 million.
But globally... PS3:12.6 million sold 360: 18.9 million sold Wii: 25.8 million sold
Consistantly, week to week in 2008, the PS3 and Wii especially have been outselling the 360 - even in America! (though the gap between the PS3 and 360 is smaller in the US).
The 360's 10 mil in America is because it had a significant advantage over the other two consoles before they began. I'm not anti 360 - if I didn't use a PC I'd probably have one - but this guy is talking bull.

I myself am a 360 owner only as it had the games I like, specifically Halo 3. I cannot afford to get anthor console at the moment so have the one I enjoy the most.

Thats why I own both but spend 99% of my time using the 360 i have had one go t**s up on me but was repaired and back to me over the weekend I love my xbox and the ps3 is a fine machine just lousy software but i would never trade my 360 for the ps3. I bought my PS3 for MGS4, & i get the feeling its gonna be collecting dust for the rest of year after that..... but, it is very good at collecting dust so not a total waste then!

I'm a pc gamer as well, but am currently working through uncharted, GT5 prologue, motorstorm and Conan on the ps3. I haven't even bought yet GTAIV which I know will keep me occupied for months and I am also interested in MGS4.
All this is to be fitted round finishing HL2 epi2 on the PC, and I haven't even looked at portal or team fortress 2
I think there is plenty to keep yopu occupied, particularly if you game on more than one system.

I'm afraid denial won't get you very far young man. It is a fact that the PS3 has outsold 360 in Europe and you know it. Basically, you made a silly statement about MS storming the market this generation and now you look like a chump.
Everyone also talks about console sales, but games sales is what really matters. Games development companies will make games for the console that people buy the most games on. If you ever look at the top games sales they are almost always on the 360 (except for some of the Wii only games). PS3 will get one or two, but most are 360 games.
Most of the people I know purchased a Wii for the kids or as a second console (because it was cheap) but have never purchased another game for it. As a matter of fact, most games dislike the game play of serious games on the Wii because of the controllers.

Interesting news, and interesting timing for it. The Wii is expected to pass XB360 in US by June 15th, making it the top selling system in every region.
Sounds like a swan song from Microsoft. This news will be forgotten when the internet floods with news of Nintendo being the top selling console maker worldwide next month. XB360 is less than 600k units ahead of the Wii at this time, and WiiFit hasn't released here yet.

Not very good in my eyes. I guarantee that by Christmas this year, PS3 sales will be level at least with those of 360 worldwide. My thinking is that if the PS3 can sell this well up till now with few decent games and an expensive price, then it will blast the 360 for sales when all those big hitters are released, especially MGS4.

And everybody I know purchased a Wii for the family because it's fun for ALL of them, not just the kids. And they've purchased many games for it. We have around 15 games for the Wii. But anecdotes don't prove anything. The market has spoken and like it or not, Nintendo is kicking A$$ this time around. The only reason they haven't blown other consoles' sales figures completely out of the water is THEY CAN'T MAKE THEM FAST ENOUGH.
As for "serious" gamers and their "serious" games not enjoying the Wii controller's game play I can only say: do you read what you type?! SERIOUS games? I'm sorry, I thought gaming was supposed to by ENTERTAINING. If I want high pixel count, more polygons, blah blah blah...I'll play on my PC. Neither the Xbox 360 or PS3 can touch PC gaming in that realm STILL.
Then for fun *WITH OTHERS* I'll play Wii with my friends and family. The Wii is the only console with a focus on multi-player fun IN THE SAME ROOM. I hear all this crap about "terrible online play" and whatnot. SO? You guys don't get it. You're so used to isolating yourselves into your little worlds and playing with disembodied "friends" online. It's like you forgot how to have fun with other people IN THE REAL WORLD. The Wii augments real relationships. It's just one more fun thing to do together. It's not a solitary activity like playing GTA IV which I'm sure is fun in its own right. I'm considering getting a 360 for just that reason. But it has no multi-player modes that work with people in the same room. Not even LAN play.
So, what have we learned? 1. The Wii is fun. 2. Wii is made for people who want to interact directly with other people. 3. Wii is dominating Xbox360/PS3 in the marketplace. 4. Sony/Microsoft fans are SERIOUS.

I just did, but interestingly enough, they mention a huge drive in sales dominating from Rock Band, which as we know, was not released for the Wii. However, it will be coming to the Wii in June. So, let's see how the game sells on the Wii compared to the PS3 version if you want to use EA as your guideline for which system is successful. In fact, lets do this. We'll see which game sells more after a month into launch in the US - Wii Fit or MGS4, as you find the idea laughable.
We'll discuss things again then, in mid-July after MGS4 has been given a month's run. There's no point to debating over things without actual numbers.

Exactly and Microsoft think they've already won this battle, in fact the total opposite is happening, there slowing losing ground. Considering they've had like over a years head start and there struggling to keep up with the Wii and PS3 is bad.
Lets all accept that the gamecube mark 2/wii will sell the most this generation. It's not that it's a better product or that it has better games. Nintendo have taken mainly old tech added a new tech controller thus a console under Ł200 at launch. The games have for the most part being simple casual affair which anyone can play. All in all meaning it has sold like the proverbial sliced bread. I really hope that nintendo don't get away with repacking old technology next gen or there won't truly be a 'next gen'.(is that poor grammar?)

Let me put into further perspective - in Japan, Wii Fit has already sold more units than PS3 consoles. An unfair comparison due to price difference, sure. Yet, all the same, if as many people are buying Wii Fit as they are PS3s, that means that MGS4 would have to sell a copy for every PS3 out there. Outside of Wii Sports, no game gets an absolute 1:1 attach rate (and Wii Sport only due to the fact that it comes WITH a Wii)

But for the record I do take better care of my 360 than any of my other consoles. I've even bought an intercooler to protect its warm, metalic embrace and I prefer it laid down instead of upright when playing with it. It may be green and dull but I can't get over the curves.

seems like the writer (and some of us) are unable to read what was qouted Microsoft CLEARY said HIGH DEF next gen. And Clearly said Wii excluded to make sure the point was accross! Failed Wii is not HIGH def (720 and up). That belongs to Microsoft and Sony. Too bad for Wii if Microsoft reaches the $249 price point AND adds a causual game lineup with a easy access control interface like the Wii (game over). That would be more important than a blu ray player. Why do I say that? Because blu-ray is not helping sale ps3s after the format war is over. Where is the drove of people buying it for high def that was waiting on the war to end? I guess the fantoys all had bought it already!
