Valve: no demo of Left 4 Dead before release

Developer won't let you try before you buy
Valve has confirmed that zombie lovers won't be able to try out its upcoming multiplayer survival horror game before launch.

"We tend to focus on getting the game out and not pausing the release date of the full product so we can create a demo," Doug Lombardi said in an interview with OXM.

"It is something you have to schedule and it is another release, so you have to make the choice there between completing the game by a certain date and getting it out to folks who want the full game or trying to create more demand by doing a demo."

Considering Valve's success with Half-Life and Steam, it's hard to criticise the way it markets games, because despite all expectations it's done pretty well for itself.

That said, we're pretty sure that BioShock's breakout success was in part due to the superb demo released before launch on marketplace.

Hmm... Any ideas on the rough price it'll cost then?
Gabanski83 on 16 May '08
Valve don't do demos never have for big releases. All the mags will have it reviewed before it's released anyway.

As for cost I would imagine the RRP will be £49 with shops selling at £39. The PC version will probably be £29 with it dropping to £19 in Game within a month.

To be honest, Im buying this game already, demo or no demo.

One of my most anticipated games this year, no question.

Yup, same here. Ever since the first previews I've wanted a crack at this. 4 player co-op over live is gonna be superb.

Has anyone here watched a gameplay trailer of this game yet? Ino i did the other day and my anticipation of this game has now plummeted. Sad . Used to be one of my must haves, not sure now.
rabbit0147 on 16 May '08
Demo or no demo I'm buying this game, I'v waited so long for a game that I can play online where people actually work together or that I can play simply enough with my mates. What's more it's got zombies and should be quite a good scare lol.

Personally though I think some people maybe annoyed that theres no demo. I use demo's to test how well the game will run on my PC before I buy it proper and to test the gameplay.

Really?! Maybe check out some of the better direct feed videos on gametrailers.com - this game looks the mutt's proverbials!

I was beginning to think that I was the only person getting stupidly excited about this game, but it seems that is not the case after all. Hooray for decent co-op games on XboxLive.....and hooray for zombies! I reckon this'll be a sleeper smash on XboxLive. Everyone I've raved at about this game previously knew nothing about it and is now chomping at the bit to have a go!

Maybe check out Left4dead411.com if you want some decent media?

I bet if there was a PS3 version you'd be crapping yourself with excitement, though.

Ahh, the trials of being a biased fanboy, it must be a difficult life. Twisted Evil

Well acctually i'm not bothered about the graphics, always quite liked the steam engine myself. I'm thinking more along the lines of the animation looks abit dodgy. And how the AI just stands and stares at you or runs towards you at lightning pace. Confused . And ye i watched the gameplay trailers off gametrailers.

Valve don't do demos never have for big releases.

What about the demo they made for the original half-life, that was awesome. They made a special level that included a bit of everythign you would be doing in the game.

More companies should do that if you ask me - not just release the first level.
beef946 on 16 May '08
Dead Island looks pretty spiffy, too!
Karis on 16 May '08
It's Valve. I don't need a demo to tell me it'll be worth the money.

Agreed. I have constantly played a Valve game of some sort since 1999. Almost 10 years!! Very Happy

They have some of the best replayability of any games out there, except MMOs but I am not fond of those.

Any release date yet?

Yeah F.E.A.R done that to. Confused the hell out of me when I bought the game. As for price, its an online only game so expect it to retail for as much as the wonderful, the gorgeous, the funny as hell, the ... Team Fortress 2

I couldn't agree more! Too bad most publishers don't care about quality and their cutomers that much anymore...

Have to admit that when i first saw this game in the mags i wanted it straight away.

Then i saw some footage at the sci-fi festival....and it really put me off.

It was a combo of not looking as good as i was thinking it would and not looking like it played well.
Ill read a few reviews before i lay down some cash for the pc version.
bloodbathrich on 17 May '08
As long as there are more interviews/videos coming thats fine by me.
fleeties on 17 May '08
meh, if it follows the same format of other Valve games I guess I'll be avoiding it. No matter how many times I've tried over the last 3 years to like Half Life 2 and its Episodes, I just find I can't. It just never grabbed me. Neither did the first HL and its addons.

Maybe Left 4 Dead wil be different, maybe it will appeal to the zombie slaying Resi fan in me. But then, without a demo, I guess I'll never know...

THe article does have a point about Bioshock, though. I would never have bought the game without the cleverly crafted demo which severely whetted my appetite for the full game.

your saying about the AI just standing there, remeber they are still working on this game so be patient

The latest edition of XBW360 has a preview of this game and to be honest it looks like a Resi Evil rip off.

Name one reason besides the fact that it's got Zombies in it.
Mogs on 18 May '08
The nearest recent thing valve did to a demo was, if you pre-ordered the orange box on steam, you got beta access to team fortess 2, about 2-3 weeks early, it only had a few minor bugs, and a few features like friendly fire was still a cvar, which was rapidly removed as it sucked ass.
Long and the short was i thouroughly enjoyed TF2 for a couple of smug weeks, the rest of the box rocked. I hope the servers will be there, as i have just got Rainbow6 vegas 2 ( £25 in morrrisons) and there are very few hosting co-op games, whis is a shame as co-op terrorist hunt rocks.
But will definitely be Steaming ahead (groan) and pre-ordering left for dead, will there be a will smith mod that gives you a crappy happy ending? Wink
drmattstevens on 18 May '08

Name one reason besides the fact that it's got Zombies in it.

If you would take a look at the mag before getting defensive you would see why!

They've very kindly place the preview for RE5 just before the L4D preview.
voodoo341 on 18 May '08
Just as I thought, there are no reasons.
Mogs on 18 May '08
Did you look at the mag?

Great! valve fanboys as well!
voodoo341 on 18 May '08
I have no interest in buying a Xbox 360 magazine just to confirm that Left4Dead and Resident Evil both have zombies and guns. Oh, and people.
Mogs on 18 May '08
oh and very similar graphics... in fact so similar it's hard to tell what screen shots are from L4D or what screens shots are for RE5. Then again for fanboy like yourself that means nothing.
voodoo341 on 18 May '08
Riiigght, so because they look a bit similar in a few screenshots, it means they're practically the same game. Gotcha.
Mogs on 18 May '08
so similar they look the same dickhead... get it? they look the bloody same! they look like they're the same game... IT LOOKS THE SAME!!!! IT'S HARD TO TELL THEM APART! GET IT?

Acheron51 on 19 May '08

I'm sure you yourself don't really think so.

Of course they do. Wink
Mogs on 19 May '08
Like alot here I was really looking forward to this from the stills but seeing it in action has changed this view somewhat. The stills although looking a bit dated look fine but seeing it running it looks seriously dated. Yes GFX don't make a good game but recycling the same engine year on year...still this will appeal to the Valve bean counters Smile.

As for gameplay .. well it's certainly fast and this means it's too fast for headshot kills. As far as I can tell it looks like a 3D version of the arcade classic Gauntlet ?

Yet i'm still pleased to see Valve have finally moved on and are branching out - i'm sick of them wasting their skills on remakes and addon levels.
CobaltNova on 19 May '08
No demo? Then it's all about the pre-order price, other online mates had to convince me to stump up for the Orange Box but I'm glad I did in the end. More than £20 and I'd wait for online feedback.

I would definitely have it as a Xmas pressie to myself and then the price wouldn't matter after three months though.
NethLyn on 21 May '08
From what I've heard unless the control system is sorted out it won't be worth having.
Apparently the control scheme is sluggish at best.

I would get excited but I've seen to many games be a let down for me so I'ma take this "No Demo" news with a pitch of salt.

After all Army of Two didn't have a demo neither did Alone in the dark...And look at them titles...

I'll wait until the price of the game drops before I fork out hard earned...
