The MMO genre has never really taken off on consoles in the same way as on PC. It's a puzzle for developers, but if anyone can figure it out, Nintendo can, says EA Mythic creative director, Paul Barnett.
The huge influence of World of Warcraft is the first creative problem for console MMOs, says Barnett, who currently busy working on Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.
"The number-one problem of a developer of an MMO these days is it's very hard to be creative and keep your eye on the target when almost everyone has only ever played one of these games and it dominates their thinking," he told CVG.
A successful console MMO would have to different, he says. "You would have to build something very console centric from the get-go. I think probably the best chance of someone doing something like that is Nintendo - doing something crazy that no one expects."
He went on to say that the secret to a good console MMO lies somewhere within Rock Band. "The best example I can find for a perpetual online console game is Rock Band, with it Xbox Live community store. It's somewhere in there. I don't know what it is, but that's perhaps the closest I've seen to convincing console people to do things together, to do things online, to do things that cost money, to earn income.
Why doesn't he give it a go? Simple: "I wouldn't know how to do it," admits Barnett.
A successful MMO is built around it's community, Nintendo might have to stop being so shy about online play, if they don't allow voice chat in their games (Mario Kart), I'm not sure an MMO would work.
I can see what he's saying about the Live community. I think APB will be a big hit especially on the 360 and we'll see that untapped potential of Xbox Live really take off with the so far none existant MMO community on consoles.

Everything Nintendo has ever done with online support means they will never make a good MMO. Not in a million years just cant see it. Even the modest title FF11 wasn't released in Europe (on ps2) because the HDD needed to run it wasn't supported and yet this guy thinks the Wii with a little more power than a ps2 and no HDD, will score a big hit with an MMO. I own a Wii and would love it if it happened but it won't. Not unless it involves collecting animals or family fun anyway.
Nowhere in that interview did I see the Wii mentioned so how come people are jumping on the bandwagon sayin that the wii can't handle it. So what the wii wont be Nintendo's last console and if any company was to crack it it would be Nintendo as Sony and M$ aren't known for their innovation. I dont see the fuss about MMO's anyway so Im not bothered
There is one single way in which MMO's will become popular on Consoles. Blizzard decide to port WoW to console. No other game will do it, because the nature of consoles is such that MMO's just aren't practical.
They could supply a keyboard and mouse with consoles, i suppose, but then that still doesn't give the console any advantage over the PC.
Personaly I think a Halo MMO would go down a storm with 360 gamers. There's already a rich universe there waiting to be created. There's even a ready made set-up for Horde vs Alliance type shenannigans with the UNSC vs Covenant.

Personally i would love to see an MMO based on Mega City 1, now there's a rich universe waiting to be tapped. Endlessly expandable as well with potential for adverts, vehicles, huge variety of weapons, jobs, NPC's and a perfect world to build a virtual economy on.
Hahaha thats a good one! Nintendo! An mmo! on the Wii! hahahaha with no hard drive! hahaha, I mean i've seen some miracles, but that one would top the lot!

I only read the article once, and I'm pretty sure that the Wii wasn't mentioned either. What the interviewee was saying is that Nintendo have an innovative design team and the experience to make a great MMO. They're one of the only developers that would do something different and be successful with it. Hopefully someone gets round to do one soon though.

I think this is what he meant in the article, that the PC model for MMO won't work on the consoles, so some kind of cute em up J influenced game would be the way to go

Thank you Knight, it appears that there are at least two of us that can read.

I agree about Mega City 1, but I was also coming from the angle that Halo was a familier and extremely popular franchise for 360 gamers which, imo, is whats needed to get console gamers interested in MMOs.

Can I join your 2's little c**k sucking fest? I noticed the same thing which is why I said Nintendo themselves arent up to this & didnt mention anything about the Wii.
Not sure about Nintendo's online prowess, although no reason why they couldn't come up with a damn decent concept. Maybe they've already got one in the shape of Animal Crossing?
I think FF11 already cracked it console-wise. The game was built for the console and not for the PC (hence why it was much easier to control with a gamepad than a keyboard).

If you really want to. Read the headline again - 'Nintendo first to crack console MMO problems'.
MMOs do not work well on consoles. Nintendo are the most capable of making a MMO where interaction (controls?) with the Wiimote would be easy and they have the innovation to do something fresh - not just another WOW clone.

Jeez lighten up FFS. I couldnt really care less in overall. Dont like online gameing & really dont like MMO's

Lol. Well you came to the right forum then didn't you? Just commenting on one man's opinion. Still no consol-MMO to keep an eye on though after all that.

There's always room for one more you can poke my bumhole if you like!
It has little online support really doesn't it. I wouldn't buy one unless it was for 360/Ps3.
If anyone cracks it, it will be them. A Nintendo one would no doubt be just too cutesy and crap. I'm all for originality, but MMO's generally need a mass audience and lasting appeal.
