Wii, 360, PS3 fail Greenpeace tests

"A greener game console is possible", says Greenpeace
The three console giants have failed a Greenpeace test after they were found to contain a number of toxic and potentially harmful materials.

The Greenpeace "Playing Dirty" report found substances such as polyvinyl chloride, phthalates, beryllium and bromine on the various bits and bobs within the consoles. If they checked the office pads they'd also find the remains of yesterday's KFC feast (on a Monday too, the shame - Ed)

You probably won't be chowing down on the microchips inside your PS3 any time soon (we'd hope), but Greenpeace called for console manufacturers to "design out" toxic substances.

Dr. Kevin Brigden, Greenpeace Science Unit, said: "Whether game consoles are classified as toys or not, they can still contain hazardous chemicals and materials that could harm humans. The technology is available for the manufacturers to design out toxics and produce greener game consoles now."

Casey Harrell, Greenpeace International Toxics Campaigner, added: "Our test clearly shows that a greener game console is possible; manufacturers just need to look 'inside the box' of the competition to see which of their own dirty components can be replaced with toxic free materials."

It's not so much that you'll be licking the components of your console, but more about the environmental effects when they're dumped, ending up in recycling yards in developing countries, apparently.

Here, have a Greenpeace picture of a baby monkey to remind you of the harm you're doing.

An interesting article. I shall print it out five times and throw it onto my fire that is burning the tree I just chopped down.

i've personally ate every console there's been and i'm not dead so all these toxic parts must be make-believe, just like global warming.
f**k off Greenpeace. i don't care if my 360 doesn't meet your standards. Why don't you go save the whale you tree hugging numpties. Laughing

Padua on 20 May '08
They are not actually falling foul of any laws, so why would they go above and beyond the legal requirement? In an ideal world, everything would be la de da and everyone would hold hands and sing, but I can't help but think that what Greenpeace are asking would drive up costs for the end consumer.

I agree that consumer electronics should be safely disposed of (I think there are laws in place, but I'm not too sure), but as far as I can remember Sony are the only console company with a scheme.

Yeah their hearts are in the right place, they just pick the wrong things to fight the whole time. I mean console components are the last thing i'd worry about. What about the Americans? They're much more dangerous.
me4pd on 20 May '08
It's the poor kids trying to earn they're daily loaf trying to pull these thing's apart so the valuble mateials Silicon/copper can be sold on to these console manufacturer's so they can claim theyre using 80% recycled materials in they're product's.
Dark_Prophet on 20 May '08
Although we would all prefer a greener world, the fact is the greener option is usually the more expensive one. And with console manufacturers looking to reduce console prices to beat out the competition I don't see them realy caring any time soon.

It's all so very amusing isn't it? Ha ha - let's just laugh at people who are trying to warn us that the products we buy are contributing to one of the most significant problems the world faces, after all it's just a big joke. The irony being that the people making the stupid jokes are no doubt the younger ones who are likely to see the more serious consequences of the "make-believe" issue of "global warming"...

I think greenpeace have bigger fish to save from oil spillage.

And they can f**k off for insisting that consoles are toys.

It wouldn't be a true gaming console if it weren't highly lethal for the environment. This just goes to show that Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony all know how to put out top notch machinery!

Just because he doesn't agree with your blinkered view makes him a "f**king idiot" does it! Yes global warming is/was happening but as is now widely accepted this is a cyclical thing that has been going on for thousands of years, warming up then cooling down and mainly due to the oceans...most of the bulls**t "end of the world" propaganda spouted by the IPCC and Gore have now been debunked anyway.

look, are you going to boycott a console cause its less energy effiecent than the other. are you f**k! let greenpeace stick to doing the things they're best at. nobodys going to eat there console and its not cost effective to make a green console. stick to the whales and the enviroment.
the whole joke was that its innard parts that are toxic only if you eat them. the parts are still there, i'm not denying that. where as global warming is still an ongoing debate as to whether its real or not.

f**k off Greenpeace. Nobody cares what you have to say anymore, this isn't the 80's you know. I have my TV, Wii, 360 & PC plugged in 24/7 & always on or on stand by. Now p**s off & get real jobs!

A friend of mine used to leave everything on he had an electrical fault the whole house burnt down because of leaving everything plugged in. If you don't give a f**k about the enviroment thats up to you but id seriously start turning plugs off at the mains he's dead and so are his wife and kids plus it saves around Ł200 a year if the possibility of death doesn't persuade you then maybe money does and helping the enviroment is just a little bonus.

But i do have another hobby that might upset the greenpeace. I got two turbo charged toyota gt-four both with de-cat exhaust and running full boost at all times.
websaint on 20 May '08
the 360 got system called rrod to prevent global warming effect, how green is that? ps3 is also green because its using less power(due to lack of games)
Aphexman on 20 May '08
I'm surprised no PS3 fanboys have been on yet saying how having millions of 360's turned on at the same time is probably raising the global temperature by several degrees!

btw.. Saving the world is a bit of a futile effort..

I'm not gonna get into all this name calling stuff - and I'm not concerned about consoles causing global warming (unless you're talking about the amount of heat 360's chuck out) but that cyclical rubbish is crap.

If you've seen Gore's Inconvenient Truth, he is the one who debunks the cyclical theories.

ted1138 on 20 May '08
Wow...

The stupidity of people never seems to stop growing...

I cannot beleive that there are still people on this world that when shown clear scientific fact do not believe that the human race is having a dramatic and devestating effect on the climate of the Earth...

Over 60 years ago the world was on the brink of war, the Nazis were killing millions just because of their race, religion etc...

If the world had done nothing to stop them, just thought whatever or pretented it wasn't really happening what would we all think of our parents or grandparents?

In 50 years time when the world will have changed beyond all recognition what will our children, grandchlidren think of us if we just ignore scientific fact and pretend global warming isn't real?

Back to topic though. Good article, large companys such as MS, Sony and Nintendo constantly need to be aware and reminded, when needed, of the impact they have on the environment. Yes more environmentally friendly manufacturing may mean an increase in costs for the consumer, but I think that is a very small price to pay when you weigh it up against the very planet we live on...
Shaboza on 20 May '08

The_Johnson on 20 May '08
I'm not meant to be posting here at the moment, but this is something that I feel very passionately about.

All the people telling Greenpeace to 'f**k off' (and it is always to 'f**k off' for some reason) are behaving like bottoms. This is an organisation dedicated to trying to preserve the natural beauty of the world and save the animals that we, gits that we are, are killing off. How can that possibly be bad? Even the most die-hard eco-hater wouldn't want to live in a world where the most colourful animal alive was a c**kroach, especially if that includes us because the air's full of toxic smog and WE'RE DEAD.

As for global warming, I don't know whether to believe in it or not. I've heard a lot of things. But I try to save energy as much as I can, because there's always the possibility that it might be true and, regardless of the truth of global warming, we're running out of fossil fuels (and besides it's cheaper that way). Strange how quick people are to say that things are rubbish when it affects their favourite past-time.

When it comes down to it, these companies aren't going to take any notice of the environment until the sea's up around their necks, and then they'll try to shift the blame. There's nothing we could do about that. However, I like to think that I'm helping in some small way. I'm not going to boycott Nintendo, but I'll never dump my consoles and I unplug my Wii at night. It takes four seconds and, who knows, might actually be making the world more pleasant for my grandchildren (or stop it from becoming so dire, at least).

(waits for cries of 'treehugging t**t' from the Hate Brigade)

What makes him a f**king idiot is treating the subject like it's some playground joke. When it comes to this topic I'd rather err on the side of caution; I don't think that makes my view blinkered. I accept that there are opposing scientific views; though it is worth pointing out that the majority of climate scientists now do agree that global warming is happening and that we are influencing it... but don't take my word for it - why not have a look at the New Scientist:

Earth has probably never warmed as fast as in the past 30 years - a period when natural influences on global temperatures, such as solar cycles and volcanoes should have cooled us down.

Not something for us to worry about though is it...
BlindFish on 20 May '08
Who cares? Games consoles are not toys and shouldn't be given to a small child who is likely to destroy the f***ing thing so fast you'd miss it if you blinked, so what does it matter?

I like how "Greenpeace" don't mention any other electronic goods such as Tvs, Hi Fis, Mobile phones(which are way more disposable than the average console and contain harmful chemicals in their batteries)etc. Indeed I can't help feel that this attack on gaming may have been fueled by some other motive. Jack Thompson might have gave them a donation or something...

Maybe they should remove the stick from far up their ignorant ass and start tackling the the most polluting thing on the planet - the public transport system.

Well... presumably if some adult gaming elitists had that attitude when you were a kid, then you would be more interested in lego, than sonic.

Anyway, my council-provided recycling bins are rarely used properly, but does no one think this playground-style bragging of how much they don't care about the environment is a bit...well... pathetic?

chris_gower: Ooh! Me! Me! I do!

It's not as if it's something to brag about anyway. "Ooh, look at me, I'm killing the planet. Aren't I grown up?"

Tree hugging t**t!! Razz

What you doin' here anyhoo? You're supposed to be at uni, not posting silly stories in the NGamer forums (but not posting on the rest of the forum for some reason Confused ) & clogging up the CVG news article pages with your hippy ways! RazzLaughing

Oh.. & unplug my Wii, therefore disconnecting from Wii Connect 24? NEVER! Twisted Evil & I'm not unplugging anything else either. I like to keep the time on my stereo etc & like to be able to turn my TV on without getting out of bed. So there! Razz

Oh noes! It's the attack of the emoticons! Wink

I am at uni. Ever tried revising maths for hours on end? After an hour one starts looking around for ways to procrastinate. However, if I allowed myself to post everywhere it would go too far to the other extreme and I'd get no work done, so I'm restricting where I post at the moment.

As for your pluggings-in, does it actually do any hamr to unplug the Wii overnight? Don't all the updates come rushing back when you plug it in first thing in the morning? And the fact that you're still connected implies that your router's left on as well, in which case the increased risk of cancer should be incentive to turn it off even if the energy waste isn't.

The other two? I have a clock on my bedside table with a button that turns a light on. Much more efficient. And there's never anything good on TV when I wake up. But what that really amounts to is that you're lazy and you know it. Razz

Bascially, if it's a choice of self over the whole planet (and therefore self as well), and the only difference is that I put in a bit more effort and keep a bit more money, I'm going to go for the planet. It seems you hold the other viewpoint, but that isn't something I'd be proud about.

I find it extremely amusing that greenpeace harks on videogames for containing phthalates when last I checked consoles are not in any of the food groups. Processed soy products like soy milk contain TONS of phthalates but these clucks always point to inconclusive evidence that they actually cause harm to sexual development. Okay so now I know. phthalates in videogames consoles = bad. The exact same phthalates in Soy = good. Thanks greenpeace!!! Tossers.

I don't know why people don't believe global warming is occuring. CO2 is known to have a greenhouse effect, and we've been pumping out loads of it. Makes perfect sense. A half degree rise in global temperature in less than 100 years is pretty damn impressive.
