Itagaki: No one takes its job as seriously as Rockstar

Head ninja Tomonobu Itagaki has told CVG that he thinks no studio takes its job as seriously as those at Rockstar Games when considering adult themes and content.

During a one-on-one interview with Itagaki in London last Friday, Team Ninja's main man offered his thoughts on Grand Theft Auto IV. "I think it's made extremely well and is a fun game," he said.

"People always use that as an example of violence in games. But I don't think there's anyone who takes their job as seriously as the guys who make that game. You only have to look at all the detail in there."

Violence in games doesn't worry Itagaki one bit though. And that's obvious if you've played, or even watched, anything to do with Ninja Gaiden II. "It does not bother me because we are following all of the rules in terms of ratings," Itagaki explained.

"I believe we're following morality as well in only showing violence between combatants. I think the 'violence issue' is something that is within each individual who plays the game."

I read "Head Ninja" and had to finish reading this article.

He is right though. GTA is singled out as a violent game, yet compared to many on the market it's much milder than most. I wouldn't say Rockstar have a problem with adult content. Its just a side of life many don't see like drug abuse and gang wars. I think Rockstar did a fantastic job with the content in GTA4. Most of the characters who take drugs, heavy drinking or lead criminal lifestyles end up either dead or imprisoned. And the best message of the game comes from Darko. Killing him solves nothing and letting him live makes Niko a better person.

Its all down to morality in the end. There aren't many games like GTA that take morality into any depth. Only Fable, KOTOR and Mass Effect spring to mind. Makes plain shooters look bad really doesn't it?
