Jake Gyllenhaal is the Prince of Persia

On the plus side, Gemma Arterton is the Princess
Jake Gyllenhaal has been confirmed to play the prince in Jerry Bruckheimer's movie based on the Prince of Persia games.

Mike Newell, who directed Donnie Brasco and the forth Harry Potter movie, will take up directing duties, whilst Gemma Arterton (St. Trinian's, Three and Out and Quantum of Solace) will be the princess.

Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in Persia who joins forces with Tamina (Arterton) to prevent a nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jerry Bruckheimer declined to comment on the budget, but said: "It's not one of our smaller productions." Expect it next summer.

Well, Gyllenhaal is one of my favourite actors. He is very good in Zodiac, Donnie Darko etc.

Sounds Awesome

hmmmm I don't really know whether it's suited to be made into a movie. Hard to say. I'll just wait...

Silent Hill is very good.

Jake Gyllenhaal doesn't even look Persian. They obviously just want a big name to play the lead role.
John Abraham would make a much better Prince.

Still, I hope it's a half decent film but I'm not gonna hold my breath

yeah but not as good as super mario bros with bob hoskins.
come on, there's only been 1 half decent game to movie transfer and thats mortal kombat 2. and even that was borderline watchable s**te. don't get me started on the tv series though.
ensabahnur on 21 May '08
Well, that's that film ruined for me. Can't stand Jake Gyllenhaal, or his sister.

The Family Guy sketch characterized them perfectly I think. Maggie and Jake siting at the table:
"I'm more off-putting!"
"No, I'm more off-putting!"
"Well, I'm more unattractive to put in a lead role"
"Oh yeah? Well I'm a bigger box office drag!"
Their dad walks in:
"Kids! Kids! You're both... just awful."
falloutwarchief on 21 May '08
lets just hope there are no mountains involved.

lol

Some bumming wouldn't go amiss.

Or President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he would be awesome

That Family Guy sketch did make me laugh, although I don't agree with it. Jake Gyllenhaal is a great actor and has been in some fantastic films, with Donnie Darko being one of my favourite films, partially because of his performance in it.

But I still feel this is a really bad choice. Nothing about Gyllenhaal says Prince to me and certainly nothing says Persian. I haven't seen him act the kind of arrogance that will be needed, and can't really imagine it. He is very much the everyman guy, often reminding me of Toby Maguire.

Also can't really imagine this as a good choice of game to make into a film. One of the fantastic things about the Prince Of Persia games was performing the amazing feats of gymnastics and the fantastic animation that accompanied them. This is going to be a CGI heavy film that will feel very much like watching someone else play a video game. Also the Prince himself is a rather unlikeable character for the majority of the games, which I think will come across badly in the films, probably taking on a stroppy Anakin teenager type persona.

Also, you can't say Silent Hill was "very good." It was one of the better video game film adaptations, that had a great look to it, but bar this it was a poor film. Bad story which made no sense and poor acting.

Haha he gets my vote.

Well I'm faintly optomistic. I loved POP:SOT, but not enough to worry about a bad movie tarnishing it (the sequal game already did that). Gyllenhaal also seems like a fair choice to me.

From the makers of POTC it should be fun.

May not be great, but should be fun.

He doesn't resemble a Persian? What about the REALLY obvious one: she doesn't resemble an Indian!

It's the lead female that really shows the semi-racism behind Hollywood. Gyllenhaal can just convince as the Prince(why did they have to give him a name?) if he doesn't simply play himself as he tends to in his films. He's fantastic at playing himself. No one does Jake Gyllenhaal like Jake Gyllenhaal, not even Toby Maguire.

But there is simply no way Atherton can be an Indian princess unless her skin is caked in make-up. There are plenty of Indian, Asian or Arab actresses that could have suited the role.

Your thinking of 'The Queen of Persia'. Ho, ho, ho.
Mark240473 on 21 May '08
I love the PoP games so I wouldn't want this to be ruined... but if Jerry Bruckheimer is behind it it might, just might, turn out to be good. I reckon Jake Gyllenhaal could look Persian with enough make-up.

He makes me moist...
AlbertStoots on 21 May '08
For once, I'm entirely optimistic about this!

I'm quite passionately in love with Arterton recently (don't even ask..) and am a big fan of Gylenhaal.

Lads, even if you don't like him, he's got to be better than Orlando Bloom, who was the suggested lead.....

Well, you've got a damn good point there mate. The lesser of two evils then I suppose... Orlando Bloom has the range of a carrot.

I was physically pained when I heard he was in the running.
It would just be pirates of the carribean - in the mid east! But sans cap'n jack.
There was another possibility, who was another pretty boy blondie.
Gylenhaal at least can do tough (Jarhead pls?)

Will the movie be following the same story as the game, characters and all?

I have to agree with you there mate, they could have used Shilpa Shetty (you know the one from the Big Brother fiasco) or a much better candidate was Aishwariya Rai (indian actress) she was in the film about King Arthur (I think it was called the Last Legion) and she has also been doing those L'oreal adverts. As far as we know they could have approached indian acteresses but maybe they were to busy making their 4 films a month in bollywood!!

Also Jon Abraham for the prince!
sag2xc on 22 May '08
David Zandi the real Prince of Persia should've been hired. Disney and Jerry really screwed up this great franchise.
