Nintendo responds to Greenpeace criticism

'Nintendo chose not to take part in the survey', says spokesman
Nintendo has hit back at criticism from Greenpeace who claimed that the Wii tested positive for hazardous chemicals and materials.

As we reported yesterday, Greenpeace recently unveiled that Nintendo was bottom of the pile in its Guide to Greener Electronics, which ranks the top 18 manufacturers of PCs, mobile phones, TVs and consoles in terms of policies on tackling environmental waste.

But speaking this morning to TechRadar, Nintendo refuted the claims. "Nintendo has not been badly rated by Greenpeace," a Nintendo spokesman said. "Greenpeace chose to conduct a survey and produce a report, which graded companies upon the voluntary submission of information.

"Nintendo decided not to take part in the survey and were therefore 'ungraded' in the resulting report. Nintendo provides detailed information regarding our compliance to EU Directives via the Consumer Section of our website and therefore we felt it unnecessary to take part in the Greenpeace survey.

"Furthermore, we fully comply with all the necessary EU Directives on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances aimed at environmental protection and consumer health and safety. Furthermore, in order to ensure our products are safe for use by young children we also take into consideration the standards applicable to toys."

Dr. Kevin Brigden at the Greenpeace Science Unit at Exeter University has been contacted for further comment, so don't expect this to be the last of it.

Ooooooooo...!

That's a slap in the face for greenpeace, trying to meddle in gamers' affairs. Sunsabritches.

Well that is poor by Greenpeace not to mention that fact! Also I think Nintendo should have supplied the info if they had nothing to hide. Their products may meet guidelines but companies these days should be trying to exceed the standards where possible rather than just trying to meet them.

Why are Nintendo so secretive about stuff like this? They've still not given away the proper specs of the Wii, and now they're not even letting people test their system? What are they hiding?

Do they make the cases out of whale souls or something?
Dajmin on 21 May '08
Every wii comes free with a case of whale blubber!

You have been taking yours apart haven't you......
leefear1 on 21 May '08
Yep, whale souls and distilled infant tears.

It wouldn't surprise me if it was all made up by Greenpeace anyway. Doubt it's the first time those smelly, squrrel stroking twig enthusiasts twisted the facts for their own protests. From what I've heard they're a highly, highly corrupt organization, borderline evil I mean, like PETA.

WTF? Greenpeace got all the consoles and took them apart in a lab.

http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/game-consoles-no-consolation200508

Nintendo's Wii actually did better than the PS3 and Xbox which were full of toxic gases.

Ah, sorry... that's just their PR departments.
Weezer on 21 May '08
Of all things though, surely consoles would be one of the safer consumerables to have "harmfull substances" in. I mean, I have every console I ever bought since the master system days so its not like anything bad is going into the ground and causing any real damage.

Given the way consoles are, I would think a lot of people would keep them. Its not like you would keep a 15" TV you had for nostalgic reasons, unlike a console.

i dont know what all the fuss is about. another excuss to have a go at the gamer. these things dont get thrown away on a daily basis. why dont they look at SAMSUNG and the fact that my samsung ml laser printer is cheaper to throw away and buy a new one that comes complete with a toner cartridge than it is to buy the replacement toner certridge on its own!!!! Confused

Never read the article, did you?

You can't really criticise Nintendo. The information is on the website so why waste their time getting it all together and sending it off to Greenpeace.
jipf on 21 May '08
God damn hippies, go save some whales instead of slating video games for being the cause of global warming yadda yadda yadda...

You know, everything nowdays seems to be either bad for the environment, gives you cancer or reduces your sperm count.

For any south park fans we need to get Cartman on the scene Very Happy

I think most people keep their consoles somewhere or sell them/give them away to someone then just throw them away, like one of the posters above said gamers will keep their consoles foe nostalgic reasons. Although I do commend the good work done by greenpeace I also agree that sometimes its members go far. For instance they are constantly lobbying the goverment to increase fuel prices (you know because we don't pay to much already Rolling Eyes ). I can't help but get the feeling that even if the consoles were perfect greenpeace would find something to latch onto and furthermore if they only gave Nintendo a low score because they would not give them any information on the wii then it just looks like sour grapes. I would have thought that the wii has a lower power consumption then the PS3 and the Xbox 360, so surely its "carbon footprint" is lower?
sag2xc on 22 May '08
Why didn't Nintendo take part in the tests? Are they ashamed of their consoles. They are already put together by underpaid, overworked employees, paid a fraction of the consoles value (which is around Ł45) then Nintendo slap a Ł180 price tag on and take all the money.

With respect to greenpeace, the amount Nintendo make from their consoles, uncovering flaws in the consoles production is key to making future consoles better for everyone.

And for those who call Greanpeace "hippies" had better get their story straight. Modern living is going to collapse in 50 years or less, and anyone trying to extend that time deserves some repect.

I'm all for conservation (its where I'm headed) but what the hell are you talking about?
Acheron51 on 22 May '08
What about power consumption of gaming consoles, the Wii must be the lowest as its console is alot less powerful than the 360 and PS3!
