Japan: PSP still dominating hardware sales

Weekly sales fell across the board but PSP retained the top spot
Weekly Japanese hardware sales fell across the board once more, but PSP retained its place at the top of the chart by some distance.

Having outsold its nearest competitor, Nintendo's Wii, by 22,500 units the week prior, PSP sales came in at nearly 30,000 greater than those of the home console during the week ended May 18. Sales were likely boosted again by the success of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which blue shelled Mario Kart Wii to reclaim the top spot in the latest Japanese software chart and pass the two million sales mark.

While DS software is selling extremely well in Japan, taking 15 of the top 30 chart places during the week in question, sales of the handheld fell 16,000 units week-over-week, although the system was only 6,500 units short of the Wii's total.

PS3 sales were only 700 units greater than those of its predecessor, but should pick up in the coming weeks as new bundle offerings appear closer to Metal Gear Solid 4's June 12 release.

Xbox 360 sold around 200 units more than it managed during the week ended May 11, but its total was still shy of 1,500.

PSP - 70,536
Wii - 41,572
Nintendo DS - 34,905
PlayStation 3 - 7,701
PlayStation 2 - 7,022
Xbox 360 - 1,474

I have to say I'm thinking too little too late for the PSP.
gothchild on 26 May '08
Wow, they are really starting to take to the PSP over there (are they mental?) But what is going on with the PS3? I cant believe its still selling so poorly over there, if the 360 was popular over there sony would be in real trouble. Go Nintendo!

Everybody over the months has probably noticed i am a nintendo fan, have been since mario bros nes/mario kart on snes the 2 games that single handedly made me have a love for nintendo and mario. Reason is that i am not a "fanboy" i am admiration of the innovation the vision of the famicom, and of course shigeru miyamoto, who should be given a prize of entertainment maintstream a la bafta oscars.I was with them through the tough times of the late N64 and early gamecube, its been justified now by them right being at the helm of games industry. all those people who said this will be the last ninty console underestimated ninties fan base, and reclaimed number 1 spot. I think the reason they get a bashing on here is coz those people have got egg on there face and can't stand the beloved PS generation being knocked of top of the premership. I for one at 23 and many of us who first had a love the for italian plumber see him as a mate who u had good times and bad Very Happy i.e all the times you jump off a platform to completeing super mario world remember that one guys arguely the best 2d platform game have made. that is why nintendo will still reign and why mario is NOT FOR KIDS he is for the whole planet

Monster Hunter portable is the reason the PSP is selling so well. The game has been in the top 2 in software safes for something like 14 weeks now.

I'm surprised the PS3 sales figures are still so low over there, I thought they would have started to pick up by now.

Dear Fellow PS3 owners, really would any of you rather play Mario instead of GTA 4, R:FOM, MGS 4, uncharted, DMC 4, Ratchet & C etc. 60gb owners, Resi 4, Okami, etc etc...

Xbox owners, would any of you, if forced to chose play a Mario title instead of, Halo 1,2,3. Bio shock, GTA4, DMC4, GOW, Forza and lots more.

There is still this perception in some parts of the industry that the best game play will always come from the 'masters' Nintendo. This of course justifies them relasing the gamecube again with a clever controller, but oh its Miyamoto he's a genius.(the sun will always shine from his rectum!)
Please put a SOCK IN IT!
There's game play a plenty in the titles I've mentioned but combined with true next gen graphics.
I suggest Stormchaser that you read Game-central(if you don't already), good teletext mag but with a Nintendo bias streak that runs a mile wide.

P.S
If I want like some classic platforming action I will play Sonic 1,2,3. Wink

Half of these games are FPS's! Devil may cry is average at beat (now anyway, the first one rocked) Plus you listed some of these games twice (Shame, it just proves the lack of killer exclusives on these consoles)
As for this part (60gb owners, Resi 4, Okami, etc etc...) How f**king lame, when you want to defend a console, try not to point out its blistering flaws, and about 50 people have the 60 gb version so your point is as redundant as your post is desperate.

Oh, and God of war is not on the xbox. snooker cue.

That's nice. Personally I think Mario is an irritating fat git. Not everyone thinks that annoying sounds, lots of bright, vomit-inducing colours and annoying platforming makes great gameplay. If you love him then fair enough (creepy as it is), but I certainly don't! Started to get bored of the games at around the time Sonic came out... Now Sonic's rubbish too. What a horrible world we live in.

Mario is like the Mickey Mouse of the gaming world- popular because he's totally irritating.

I have to say I'm thinking too little too late for the PSP.

I don't see how really, it's not as though we have a PSP2 coming out, the graphics are amazing for such a small machine also-it could have a lot of years left until Sony release a 2nd, which hopefully will be more successful. Those sales are amazing Shocked

*insert joke about everyone in Japan already owning a DS here*

I'm glad the PSP is still going strong. Granted, it's not perfect (or the most portable friendly), but it has its niceties. I would still like them to focus more on games than new features all the time though.

Also, since the PS3's getting an in-game XMB, I want the PSP to have one too. The amount of times I'm playing a game only to exit it to access some pics. It would make everything seamless.

GamesCentral isn't biased towards Nintendo - people have been saying that since it was digitiser and its just not true.

They just dont get caught up by hype thats all.

Sony fanboys get annoyed because they gave Haze 3/10 and Heavenly Sword 4/10, but they were right! They are both rubbish!

They've been the same with the Wii too. Eledees got decent marks in most nintendo mags and got a rubbish score on GC, as did BWii etc.

Remember how GC were last gen? They never stopped talking about Psyconauts, Katamari, Shadow of the collosuss and ICO - NONE of these games were on a nintendo system.

They just have good taste.
fanboy on 26 May '08
Re : Fanboy

I agree with you that one of the elements which makes game central stand out is there independence of hype. Also there journalism for the most part has integrity.

However they do seem to cover more wii and ds software in there reviews they any other format, and the letters they publish do seem to come from mostly ninty format owners. I just get the feeling there Big N fans and it does colour there views. Am I the only who see's this or am I being a paranoid sony fanboy? Shocked

One more thing, when I read Official ps2 mags 9 out of 10 review for Killzone I was all ready to get it on release. Then I read GC's review which almost stopped me buying the game.
I thought well the official mag may be biased as it's a Sony game, Gc have no loyalty to anyone. However I did risk getting it in the end and though it was brilliant and the on-line mode was the best I'd experience on the PS2. So in that case PS Mag was right. I've stuck with the them onto the Official PS3 mag I find it a good balance to Game central, who sometimes seems to follow 'Edge's' policy of 'we will give most games a lower score than everyone else so all we see that we must be right'. Unless its got a certain plumber in it that is'

Excuse rambling on about other mags 'CVG' but I had to get that of my chest. Smile

I think what's more startling about this article is how poorly both the Xbox360 AND PS3 are selling out there... Are the Japanese 'done' with next gen consoles, and instead prefer the handhelds and the 'family friendly fun' that is the Wii - these sales figure would suggest so.

It's unbelievable how well the PS2 is STILL doing... Crazy.

I think the bigger source of the low HD console sales is the low sales rate of HDTVs. Sony and MS jumped onto HD early on, but the HDTV market still only accounts for less than half of the tvs owned in major countries. You really can't enjoy an HD console without a HDTV, and the market just isn't set for it yet. Old CRT TVs are still going strong (mine is over 16 years old now - almost as old as some of the posters on here!)

I think that Nintendo's wait and see approach to HDTV paid off this generation, allowing them to release a more affordable console. We have a generation or 2 of gaming to get through before HDTV becomes the norm.

I'd believe that over Monster Hunter - I know the Japanese love it for some reason but I'm damned if I know why. It's a great concept for a game, but the controls are just so broken that it's almost completely unplayable - for me at any rate.

I'm really surprised the Wii and the DS are still selling so well - surely every Japanese citizen has got 2 or 3 Wiis and half a dozen DSes by now???

as to the paranoid sony fan, i use to think that for 6 years while the sony reigned six painful years of my playstation's better then yours for 6 years lol. and i use to think they all hate us ninty nobody likes us nintedo will die. why did i right it on this page, coz sales pages always get debates started, and i don't love mario u sicko, but i consider him like yoshi, who incendly i named my cat after lol, when u complete all the mario games well the 2d's u done struck up a come to do it u little git mentality, and when u do it and it happy ever after with the princess its like a disney cartoon we like disney for that reason, i am a big ninty fan but i don't cloud my judgement to a halo or gran turismo, then again fan boys u don't get advance wars Laughing
