Rock Band price axed

Grab the complete game for £40 cheaper online
With developer Harmonix still maintaining that £180 is a fair price for Rock Band, Play has seen sense and knocking 40-quid off the RRP.

Play first cut £30 from the price of the 'Band in the Box' instrument pack. So you can get a set of drums, guitar and microphone for less than one hundred pounds.

The company then pulled a tenner off the game disc, which brings the cost down to a more reasonable total of £139.99.

Of course, that 'reasonable total' is only relative to the £179.99 price point that the majority of shops are selling it for. Expect to see other retailers to follow suit. We hope...

This is exactly why Play.com is the best place to buy anything.
Scotch expert on 28 May '08
If Play are able to do this surely it means that the cost of the game from the suppliers is much lower than Harmonix want us to believe. Boosting up the rrp due to the shipping costs...fooey, they just want more moneyz.
MightyMoose on 28 May '08
Play.com and Amazon have been selling it at this price for months (as a preorder). Its still too expensive for me, though.
Goona on 28 May '08
When I went to HMV & Zavvi on Saturday they had the whole bundle with game for £150 too. Sure its £10 more than online but if you prefer shops, or dont trust online retailers, there you go
mfnick on 28 May '08
It's a start anyway. It now matches the amount you'd pay for it if you bought it in mainland Europe.

Still about 1.5 times the US price though.
Dajmin on 28 May '08
Yeah - you can even get more off if you use a voucher at Play.

I'd heard that Asda were selling the whole lot for £110, or so a friend told me.

The odd thing about all this is that I'm not particularly fussed about this game now. The longer I've had to think about it, the less I want it. Also, that GH4 drum-kit looks so much better so I'd probably hold off to see what that will be sold for before making a purchase of either.

Smile

EDIT: Just checked the Asda website and it's nowhere near £110 - guess my friend got it wrong...or they had some kind of introductory promotion on launch.

The best deal on Rock Band at the moment is in HMV. £150 for the band in a box, the game and 2,100 microsoft points. And as an added bonus if you or any of your mates is a student their discount card is still accepted for the bundle dropping it down to £135 which is about what it should have been in the first place.
snipeshotsamurai on 28 May '08
Dear Chris, thanks for the advertorial, I'm sure your readers will be none the wiser. The cheque's in the mail.

Yours sincerely, Play.com Wink

Afraid not. They are selling the instruments alone for £130 & £40 for game.

this does seem about the best offer. those MS points would come in handy for dwnloading the extra tracks.
still ain't gonna buy it though.

Damn!! Went into the first shop near my house and bought it £159.99 from Woolworths, just couldn't wait!
Superb game, but the best tunes are only on pay for download! .....And Justice for All, Blackened and Ride the Lightning!!!! War Pigs!!!!

Honestly non-believers should try it, real good fun like Cool
Zepf on 28 May '08
i know we love having games straight after release but
apart from advising people not to buy it, id say wait a month or two and get it bargin bin cheap.

i see so many newish games going for under 20 quid on play.com or laughingdeals.com.
roland82 on 28 May '08
I still think it's a ridiculous price.

Oh, and Zepf, that's great, but from where I come from you can't just "try" something for £160.
RumbleThunder on 28 May '08

I believe it will be brilliant but im not paying £140-180 to find out
mfnick on 28 May '08
No rhythm game is worth the best part of £200.
JimSteele on 28 May '08
I got mine from play.com
Brilliant game and it is a tonne of fun but it isn't worth the money. £100 for the entire set would be acceptable.
brookie_2001 on 28 May '08
It's still too expensive! There is no way i would pay any more than 100 for the entire bundle (inc game).
wudragon on 28 May '08
Ha ha,looking forward to seeing how much the set will be down here in aus.
I think a safer bet is to just get GH4.
Bugalugs213 on 28 May '08

If they can still make a profit then the £180 would really be a rip off. Better price but still too expensive i feel. I prefer Guitar Hero anyway-i'll stick to that and avoid Rock Band.
almanac2015 on 28 May '08

indeed they have, i posted info on this before the 360 was given a release date play.com have always had that price down and they will cut it further and if you visit http://www.myvouchercodes.co.uk and check out play.com you can get more discount to get it even cheaper.
mol_e on 28 May '08
I really fancied this game, but £180 could buy me some real musical equipment as I produce music. There is no way on earth they can justify the hike in price, it's just blatant rip off and I am not paying it. If everyone does the same, the price is bound to drop even more.
bazzatuk on 28 May '08
It was me.....Sorry, it was just the instruments that were 110...

My bad...

Still far too expensive. Unless it saves your marriage http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=143399
Mortey on 28 May '08
I think anyone buying this game to play with friends should get their mates to chip in too. It is called "Rock band" and I wouldn't buy my band mates their instruments. I would say bloody buy them yourself Smile
kimoak on 28 May '08
most people have one GH guitar by now (those ppl who like guitar games anyway Wink ) so why not just buy the drum kit for 70quid and the game for 40quid and use a voucher to get money off? works out as a fair price i think
Fleisch on 28 May '08
I got my solus game in Currys.digital (Dixons) for £39.99. Playing with GH guitar and Xbox headset. Great fun. Thinking about getting the instruments still as would be better with real mic (doesn't work with SingStar mics Crying or Very sad ) and when a couple of mates come round....

Yeah thats what i was thinking but £70 just for the drums, you're better off just buying the whole instrument package for £100.
greenhell on 28 May '08
Good thing I was clever and got it from Play.com. It's great fun and totally worth it, if only to have all 4 people play it together. I can guarantee you by Xmas they'll have the whole setup for £100. Not everyone will want to buy the game at this price.

GH4 will most likely be the same price. What's the real big issue is will the RB kit work with it?
Skreb-Masters on 28 May '08
This isn't news, and it still isn't acceptable. Part of the reason games are so much more expensive in the UK than the US is that there's a larger margin built in for the retailer, which is why we frequently see discounts from RRP from places like Play on new games, which is something you get a lot less often in the US.

The point is that if Rock Band were priced in line with the rest of the market, it should be being discounted from £140, not to £140.

As long as EA don't drop the RRP and the price to retailers, then buying the game - even from a discounting retailer like Play - is still sending them the message that it's acceptable to mark up games by 110% (as opposed to the standard market rate of 50-60%) and that you're willing to pay that premium in the future.

Nobody should be buying this game until EA makes a move to address the obscene pricing.
iapetus on 28 May '08
The only way it would be even remotely acceptible is if you had friends who were buying one instrument each. Of course they'd probably need an extra copy of the game to go with it.

Guitars as peripherals I could just about deal with, but a full band kit? Jeez, if you want to be in a band that much you could get a real entry-level instrument for about the same price.
Dajmin on 28 May '08

When you put it like that...
Can't argue with that, dude Cool Respect!
Zepf on 28 May '08
they have already announced that GH4 will be more expensive than rock band. And the way the GH franchise is going (concentrating on difficulty rather than fun and more musical note charts) I think I'll pass on GH4. The GH4 drum kit itself does look better but its all about the note charts, and I doubt the track listing or DLC will be anywhere near as good as rock band.
Perjoss on 28 May '08
Still aint gonna buy it. What's the point, when i still play GH to death?
CrippledHooba on 28 May '08

Dont trust online retailers? What are you, 60? Get with it man, you can trust the reputable sites.

There are plenty of reasons to prefer high street stores if they're available. The fact that you're almost guaranteed to need to return at least one of the Rock Band peripherals is a pretty good one - it's a lot easier to take it down to your local HMV than it is to arrange for it to be sent back to play.com...
