Ubisoft has given CVG a statement regarding Splinter Cell: Conviction's no show at the company's UbiDays event in Paris.
We told you recently that the game wouldn't make 2008 (via Xbox World 360 magazine), which caused quite a storm and forced Ubisoft to bury its head in the sand and pretend there was 'nothing to see here'. As it turns out there's nothing to see at the firm's huge showcase event in Paris either.
We tracked down a Ubi spokesperson for the official line: "In reference to speculative stories that have appeared recently, in January of 2008 we announced that the game would be released in the fiscal year of '08/'09. And at this point in time we are not ready to be more specific than that. We will begin to communicate more once we feel the time is right for us and our fans."
Sounds to us like the game has been taken back to the drawing board for a bit of a re-think, like the original report suggested. It was at the UbiDay's event in May 2007 that the game was unveiled and we watched it being played with our own eyes. It's strange there's not even a teaser movie to be found this year. Maybe Metal Gear Solid 4 has something to do with that?
The spokesperson added, "Splinter Cell: Conviction is still in development," just in case you were in any doubt. Don't expect to see anything on Fisher any time soon then, basically.
I'm glad 'they've taken it back to the drawing board.' Splinter Cell series is a cynical rip-off of Metal Gear Solid. It does have its moments but if Ubisoft were to show it now it would pale in comparison to the, reportedly, magnificent MGS 4.
Games like Splinter Cell and Saints Row are products designed by accountants with no zest, buzz or any other word with the letter z. Unless games companies respect us, I keep my money for the good stuff. I'll stick to the real thing.

Thats a bit harsh, ive got enjoyment from both Saints Row & Splinter Cell, sure they may not be a MGS or GTA (But what is?) but for a good gaming session i would heartlily reccmoned either SC or SR.

Rip-off of MGS? Without the overblown cut-scenes you mean?
Thats the way I tend to feel about games, I would rather developers got things right than rushed it out to meet the demand of gamers.
Im pretty sure Free Radical would have liked an additional 6-8 months to work on Haze.
An extra 2 years would not have helped that title, Time Splitters was a poor game so why people expected Haze to be great is beyond me. Hazes biggest problem was the amount of hyping and promotion that the developers/publishers of the game gave it, Gamer.TV (On Bravo) had 2 full programs dedicated to the title and numerous other features in other episode and Rob Yescombe seem to be on every show going pushing the greatness of Haze.

Ive never played an MGS game but think lesbianas comments are a load of s**t. Splinter cell is a great series in its own right, the online in recent versions has been fantastic and the gameplay for me is top notch. I really hope this game is good, it seems to have taken a more Jason bourne approach over the usual spy game, as a splinter cell i cant wait to play it.

I'm also a bit of a SC fan. I've played the MGS games, but (other than MGS on PS1) they've never really 'done it' for me....not that they're bad games, because they very obviously are technically very good - they're just not my cup of tea....the cut-scenes are tiresome and I find the story ridiculous at best.
You can't really compare SC to MGS - they offer completely different things....the only obvious similarity is the 'stealth' element.

Didn't realise that there really were people around as clueless as this... my bad.
It's probably for the best that they took Conviction back to the drawing board. I'd read a few previews that were confused by the logic of the in game AI. Apparently the premise of the game just wasn't that great...
Shame that the game looks to be delayed again as a sequal has been a long time coming...i hope they are taking it back to the drawing board because from what i saw conviction didnt look like it had much potential, it seemed to have one idea and looked quite cheap. I say go back to the classic stealth from the first three games, its original and enjoyable.

With Splinter Cell and MGS you have two different beasts. With MGS you have a stealth game which doesn't really require any stealth elements. It tries to be more like a Hollywood movie. That's no bad thing as I loved the original on PS1 and while the following two weren't that great, I can't wait to finish Snake's tale. With Splinter Cell you have a game which has much more focus of stealth and realism. No cyborg ninja's making people p**s their pants (hehe). Splinter Cell also essentially created online for stealth games, something MGS has tried to imitate and not managed to top.
