Konami asked games press to keep quiet about the massive length of Metal Gear Solid 4's cut-scenes, claims MTV's Multiplayer blog.
It emerged earlier this month that the PS3 sequel has at least two cinematics "approaching" 90 minutes long, as reported by PSW magazine and now in the new issue of Edge as well.
Apparently, Konami was keen to keep these huge cinematics under wraps from print reviews...
"I've been told by two gaming media sources who asked to remain anonymous that Konami representatives had been asking print reviewers to keep some technical details out of their reviews, namely the length of the game's cut-scenes and the size of the game's installation on the PlayStation 3," reads the MTV blog.
"Such details wouldn't have been plot spoilers, but perhaps the publisher was concerned that they would be viewed as negatives?"
PSW called the game's story, "the videogame equivalent of all three Godfather movies on one disc," and "if you found previous games' story exposition laborious, then you'd better find yourself a nice cushion and plenty of teabags in readiness for MGS4's.
"They can be skipped, but you'll be missing out on some of the finely crafted examples of FMV footage anywhere in gaming," the article boldly proclaims.
for everyone who has NOT done so already - 1st independant review of mgs4 on ign.com.... they gave it 9.9! yesss (all the individual elements got 10, lastability got 9.5)........
they also did mention cut scenes.....and yes they did say that konami had asked them not to disclose lengths of cutscenes.....
whereas the official playstation mag suggested the game was 2 thirds play 1 3rd of cutscenes.....erm....the ign review seems to suggest its more like ....half and half....i didnt quite know what to make of that - but there overall impression i got was that this is the ultimate iteration of mgs - so fans will love it

Sorry - but the 3rd Godfather movie was just awful, and to compare MGS to The Godfather is even worse. Metal Gear is far from a masterpiece with story telling - often packed full of useless information attempting to give depth to an otherwise 2D character (literally, since most of it was just a 2D cartoon on the comms system).
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the gameplay elements of the series, however - the fact Konami told reviewers not to disclose information regarding the length of the cutscenes tends to show that the company itself seem slightly embarrassed by what Kojima has put into the title, knowing that the majority of the public will dislike such items.
Oh - and Eurogamer (generally one of the least-bias reviews) gave MGS4 an 8/10 by the way. It's not all great.
What I find unacceptable about this is that the media are asked to censor their reviews at the behest of the publisher for fear that some may think that this element is a negative or that it may impact sales of one of the most hyped games in history.
Reviews should not be influenced in any way by publishers or advertisers & should be the views of the person or persons reviewing the games.
Now I honestly do not think that Konami have to worry about the sales of the game as the hype & name value of the franchise would sell bucketloads even if the game was crap anyway.
Am I the only one that sees no problem with this? The story is part of the game experience anyway and I've never been turned away by lengthy cut scenes before. As a fan of RPGs you learn to love 'em. If it adds to the experience and the story then I personally don't care how long it is.

To be fair, they have quite a right to worry - MGS3 only sold 3m in just over a year - GoW sold that in 2 months =\.
MGS3 was great IMO, just too many load screens every time you ran outside of the small zones.
i never really skip the cut scenes as they dont bother me, sometimes though on MGS2 near the end, i skip the cut scenes when solidus tells raiden how DNA is pasted on. i think you need to watch the behind the scenes of MGS2 (thats on the bonus disk with the original MGS2) to understand some parts of the story. kojima describes snake as godzilla because both of them are created by man, and kojima describes raiden as king kong. and theres more to that. im usually never confused with the story/events. but there will be some things that will be cleared up, like where was meryl during MGS2?.
"They can be skipped, but you'll be missing out on some of the finely crafted examples of FMV footage anywhere in gaming," the article boldly proclaims.
then miss out i shall then on some of the finely crafted examples of FMV footage anywhere in gaming...
*SIGH* here we go again, all Xboys bring on the sarcasm.
Sarcasm? Xboys? Actually if you can skip them then who really cares. A nice feture would be to be able to watch them once and then turn them off once you have completed the game so you don't have to wait for them to start, press a button to stop them then wait for a load. Actually poorly done cut scenes are pretty funny to watch but I'm sure these will be awesome (sarcasm).
Looks like its gonna be a great game, but developers should not be laying down any rules whatsoever as to what can and cannot be said in a review and I hope magazines and websites do not listen to them. It starts innocently enougth with something like this, but would then move on to "do not say anything negative in the review" and gamer's should be given an honest opinion by reviewers to best help them decide to buy a game or not, or at the very least give them some info so they can make up their own minds.
As for the cutscenes, I'm not bothered about the length at all. The more story the better, as long as its not over complicated for the sake of it.
Hold on, I thought the game had 90 mins worth of FMV's, not multiple one's that approach that length? Can someone clear this up? Also, not exactly new to hear developers essentially bribing reviewers to either give their game a good score of leave out some facts.
The game is stated to have approx 30 hours of gameplay - and 1/3 of that are cutscenes.....so yes, a total somewhere around 10 hours of cutscenes.
This whole 90 minute thing is probably quite close....whether that is 60, 70 or 89 minute cutscenes it's far too long for me when I want to be playing a game (not watching) and for many other people which is why it is creating such a stir in these and many other forums.
It doesn't seem good when Konami are trying to stop reviewers from mentioning this either....almost like they have something to hide and fear further backlash.
If the cutscenes are this long, then I'd much rather a second disk was included which was basically a feature length film and the cutscenes on disk 1 (the game) were cut down to 10-15 minutes maximum. There has to be better ways to express the story than stop-start-stop-start with gameplay getting interupted all the time.
I wouldn't care if the cutscene to game ratio was 1:1000 in favor of gameplay, 90 minutes is still too long. What they should have done is focus on a cutscene that would update the user when they load the game. Kind of like a "Previously on MGS4..." type movie when the game loads. For the amound of memory used on a 90 minute cutscene, we could have had an entire level. Not just a waste of time, but a waste of space. I like to be kept in the action.
Devil May Cry 4 has it right. There's 2 hours of cutscenes in the game and you can watch them as a movie after you've finished the game. MGS should follow suit. Then at least we can watch "MGS4 - The Movie" after completing the game.
I don't get it. Why would Konami try and keep it quiet, when all the PS3 fanboys were screaming that it was a "good thing"?
/knows the answer
Is it because you're an anti Sony obsessive?
Do you really want to go there? I'll be quite happy to send you running, just like all of the rest...
No, the answer is that we've got a certain breed of Sony fan around these parts for whom Sony=automatic win. Even if Sony aren't involved. Which is odd, when even the publisher is obviously hesitant.
Congrats to Konami for standing by Kojima's creative vision, but really, people should be told what they're buying. As we saw from the other thread on this subject, there are a great many users who view these extended cut-scenes as utter insanity.
Whilst I think everybody will agree that 90min cutsccenes is going way too far,you can pause them and come back if you are bothered. People should know what to expect MGS has always been about good graphics, good gameplay, convoluted storylines and..... long cutscenes. Its like people moaning because FM2009 has crap graphics. Is Okami a bad game because of its long unskippable cutscenes.
Al least Konami have taken their time and produced a quality game (if reviews are to be believed) that fans will love. Personally I can't wait - and I have a 6pack on ice ready for the 90 minute bad boys.

Indeed. I love games with a good story, but the key to telling a story within a game should be to keep the player as emmersed as possible. Some of the greatest stories, in games like Deus Ex or Planescape, work so well because most of the dialogue gives the player an oppourtunity to ask the questions. 90 minute long films are fine if I want to watch something, but when gaming I want to play something. If, for example, these cutscenes include battle sequences, then why am I forced to watch them, rather than play them?
Ah well. Kojima is still a guy who knows how to tell a good story, but these days I can't help but feel he'd be better suited to making movies rather than games.

No. Believe me. He would not be better suited to movies because he can't tell a story worth a s**t.
What about the install times at the start of each act,you Sony boys like sitting around doing nothing
at least they have the option of an install, greatly improving the playing experience. HDD caching should be standard for any console/format with the ability to do so: mass effect and oblivion are two games that ran like s**t on 360 because they streamed from the disk instead of using the hard drive to lighten the load on the cp/gpu,well unless you think pop-up and crashes are true next gen features. a 10 minute install, while a little too pc like for my tastes,is a good thing overall. i wish ms would go down the same route with the 360 but there's too many core systems out now. bad move.
MTV. The source for cold hard facts! I have said it before there are NO 90min cut scenes!
They do not say that there is "A" 90 minute cut scene its more the case that there are a cur scenes that when combined come up to around 90 minutes.
Actually, you're wrong. The latest issue of Edge (received my copy this morning) has reported that there are 2 cut scenes in particular which reaches almost 90 minutes in length EACH.

If this turns out to be true then that's an absolute joke. Got this beast pre-ordered and I'm looking forward to it but it seems to be really mixed bag. On one hand you have IGN saying the games near enough perfect. You then have Edge saying there are two cut-scenes reaching almost 90 mins each. Then there is a 5GB install before you even play the game, making that 40GB HDD seem smaller and smaller each game you buy. You then have Eurogamer saying it's only an 8/10 game and it's it's own worst enemy.
Edge and Eurogamer also both gave GRID 9/10 so there seems to be consistency between the two sources (or should that be conspiracy?). I think Kojima is trying to splice two mediums together, film and game, the hardcore MGS fan will appreciate this and enjoy this fusion, but I don't think it will convert non-MGS fan gamers. For me a game is a game and the length and amount of cut-scenes is just too much, I'll take the action and fun of GRID over MGS anyday.
You then have Eurogamer saying it's only an 8/10 game...
Whoa, whoa, whoa! I wasn't going to get involved in this conversation as you really can't win - if you like Metal Gear Solid and don't mind long cutscenes you're a Sony fanboy, if you don't you're a Sony hater, wtf? - but how is 8/10 a bad score?
2 90 minute cut scenes!!!!......... f**king awesome!, i wished there wasn't any gameplay at all in MGS, for me the gameplay is just a vehicle to get to the next cut scene & advance the story. Look if you dont like cut scenes, & games with deep twisting story lines, DONT buy MGS, go somewhere else, i personal love every minute of Kojima's vision & movies, i cant wait!!, & i'll finally get to use my PS3!....

You're a Microsoft fan boy aren't you? Go on admit it! I don't think I've ever read a postive post from you about the PS3. What makes it even sadder is you can spell! At least the other fan boys are ignorant. You do know your Xbox is just a pile of plastic and metal and Microsoft will rip you off just as quick as Sony?
*phew* well least we finally got the 90 min cutscene thingy cleared up! as other people have confirmed, edge mag gave mgs4 an 8/10, and i think they referred to TWO 90 min cutscenes - and ofcourse there will be tons of other shorter ones too i guess.
make of it what you will. i think it all depends on how much of a fan you are of the series - ign giving it a 9.9 - and by reading the review you could tell the guy loved mgs. the eurogamer reviewer did indicate that he wasnt such a huge fan of the series - what he pointed out was actually quite valid i guess. to be honest i was disappointed with the edge 8/10 - (got that info first hand from a friend who subscribes to edge and so gets the issues early).....but everyone is entitled to their opinion - and i guess it just goes to prove that yes, the things which some of us love about the games, are the very things which others hate about it LOL.
i think there'll be a roaring debate once we have all clocked the game - "the 90 min cut scenes were amazing!!", and some one else will say "wtf u talkin about???".....well, at least kojima was smart enough to add the pause option.....thank god!...all i can say is, they better be the damn finest award winning cutscenes ever!

This "Sunscramble" I've noticed lately is quite the Xbot fanboy. Or Anti-Sony everything 4eva.
When I see his avatar pic, before I have even scroll down to read his inane post, I know beforehand he has written something negative concerning the PS3. Just grow up will you and admit you are an xbot ha ha.
Does this guy put a condom over his 360 and try and have sex with it's parts or what. You could give yourself a shock and go inpotent.

off topic GRID is a superb game which i rule on xboxlive demo....deffo trading in COD4 for it(its only so long cod4 can keep on pretending on xbox live)

I wouldn't trade COD4, that will stay in my collection for the life of this gen. I hope your a clean driver too, there some rather uncivilised chaps online, hopefully they're demo only and cannot raise the pennies for the full game.

Excuse me, but f**k off. I have Mass Effect and I have no troubles whatsoever playing the game. Just because it's known that there were some gamers who experienced crashing does not make it a universal occurrence. What is a regular (and fecking needless) occurrence is having to install games onto the PS3 which just eats up all the HDD space. I know why you have to install certain games so please do not lecture me on the inefficiencies of the PS3.
Now...on topic. I simply don't have time to sit around and watch near-90 minute cutscenes, but I wouldn't skip them as I hate missing out on the story. I work seven days a week so I might just have to give MGS a miss (unless you can save your progress midway through a cutscene). I credit Kojima for making such an epic game, but that does not mean the game will be better for it. I don't think any review of MGS4 will be worth reading, you just have to experience it for yourself.

And the award for Sony fanboy dressed as a neutral goes to...
Edge Magazine giving a PlayStation game higher than 8? Perish the thought, it would ruin there 'hard-core' reputation. Tens and nine's? There only for games featuring a certain plumber...
P.S
Seriously where is this oft muted Fan boy list? Can I be at number 14 on the PlayStation one?

inefficiensies of the ps3!!? huh? with all due respect sir,did you actually read my post? i actually think an install is a good thing. oblivion, gta IV and dmc4 are all games that ran better on ps3 because of the HDD being standard. did you play oblivion at launch on 360? that game didn't run properly until shivering isles came out and a patch turned up but out of the box it was awful with pop up 10 feet away,i like my 360 but i'm not blind. i haven't got a ps3 yet (FFXIII will seal the deal) but as far as i'm concerned if there's a hard drive use it,if not what's the point? i think your the only person on earth who doesn't get loads of pop up on mass effect ,though it has seemed slightly better since bring down the sky was released. one last point i don't install ANY games, anywhere, unless dlc counts. i'm strictly a console gamer (now before anyone else starts,I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST THE PC EITHER). peace.

I thought by reading your post that you did have a PS3 and was showing the install feature some support - my mistake. Look, installs on the PS3 are a pain in the ass for what?...a second faster loading time every now and again, sheesh. The BR drives of the PS3 are too slow to read the data fast enough so the HDD has to be used or else very noticable delays start appearing. I only played Oblivion on the 360 on somebody elses 360, I have it for the PC, and it was fine from my experience (fine not being perfect, but...).
GTA4 does not run better on the PS3 with an install. That is just an assumption made with zero evidence to back it up. Why is that?...because the game randomly generates pop-in at its own rate (Check out the comparison video roaming about showing the Getalife building 'phasing' in suddenly.) I repeat it is random.
I believe that installing games should be left to the PC. Console gaming is meant to be quick and easy, sat down on the sofa enjoying typical console games like GTA, Halo, GT, Tekken and Fifa (don't laugh ) Having to install, or wait for fixes to dl over Live or whatever is a betrayal of everything console gaming stood for. Anyway, I don't care that much to waste anymore time chatting about this subject, I'm eagerly anticipating T&T to trounce England tonight.

Agreed RP...except for the footie stuff, you heathen!!
Lol no way T&T are gonna trash England tonight. I don't know why I'm really looking forward to this live friendly tonight. 10.30 BBC1 peeps support your country.
Get a life geeks for f**k sake there is a whole world out there. Find a female or something but don't argue about games machines or games, if you only know how much people laugh at you all, grow up trust me its fun.
I think Kojima is trying to splice two mediums together, film and game, the hardcore MGS fan will appreciate this and enjoy this fusion, but I don't think it will convert non-MGS fan gamers.
I think it was stated quite clearly before (several times) that MGS4 is for fans of MGS series though even non-MGS fans can still enjoy it. But it was made for the fans, not the others.
Oh - and Eurogamer (generally one of the least-bias reviews) gave MGS4 an 8/10 by the way. It's not all great.
Oh - and Eurogamer gave GTA4 10/10, they jumped on the hype bandwagon quite easily. Looks like they tried to 'not jump on it with MGS4' and gave it 8/10 so haters will be satisfied that it didn't get higher and fans can be satisfied also when 8/10 is still quite high. The reviewer even stated at the beginning, that he is not MGS fan and that he's trying to go the 'middle way' with his review. What's funny though is, that from reading the review it looked like he was going to give it at least 9.
Bah, whatever, bring it on! June 12th can't come soon enough damn it. Especially when I read that it's the best MGS in the series... well, if it's even a bit better than MGS3, then it's gonna beat GTA4 really bad in my books.
Erm.............. I thought it was supposed to be a game? Game play is King everything else is a support role! No gameplay no game!
Since the Genius of MGS on the PS the MGS series has been tosh. I was one of the fools that ran out and bought MGS2 on release day (I even took the day off work to do so!) I was bitterly dissapointed as it was not a patch on the first one. Those cutscenes just spoilt what was an above average game. I was desperatley wishing that MGS4 would be a return to it's genius roots but again Kojima seems to have forever dissapeared up his own bottom! I would have bought a PS3 if this was as good as the original and was a game rather than an interactive movie.
No, the answer is that we've got a certain breed of Sony fan around these parts for whom Sony=automatic win. Even if Sony aren't involved. Which is odd, when even the publisher is obviously hesitant.
This "Sunscramble" I've noticed lately is quite the Xbot fanboy. Or Anti-Sony everything 4eva.
When I see his avatar pic, before I have even scroll down to read his inane post, I know beforehand he has written something negative concerning the PS3. Just grow up will you and admit you are an xbot ha ha.
Does this guy put a condom over his 360 and try and have sex with it's parts or what. You could give yourself a shock and go inpotent.
Yet again, you've forgotten the spanking you've been given in every other thread, fanboy.
Your desperation in trying to sling mud by bringing up the Xbox 360 where it hasn't been mentioned reveals your foolishness to the world.
Besides, I now know for a fact that you're a registered sex offender, and that you earned that little badge of honour by exposing yourself to some young boys in a public place. I got a PM from somebody who knows you in real life.
That explains why you're so emotionally attached to your console, I think.

I love MGS games, but like yourself i didn't love MGS2 as much as i thought i would, but that's because of a number of different reasons, mainly that the demo of MGS2 was the best bit of the game! & the storyline got so twisty & turny that it ended up meaning f**k all?. I think MGS4 will have some of the best action of any MGS game, & will hopefully answer a lot of questions posed by the other games.... I just hope i dont finish it & think...what the f**k was all that about?...i'll be gutted.

Ever heard the phrase 'the pot calling the kettle black'?
Take a look at your post. Now replace the name "SunScramble" with "Suivaloom", and the term "Xbox" with "PS3".
Now you have the same opinion everyone does of you.

You're welcome.
Thanks but no thanks.
"Suivaloom" is actually a confessed PS3 fanboy. I am a multi-format gamer, with most of my gaming being done on the PC.
The reason he's making these accusations is because I dared to criticise something connected with Sony.
Remember this conversation?
That's a completely predictable point from a XBox 360 fan boy.
Shove it. Just because I say something anti-Sony (not that I did in this instance) does not automatically make me a 360 fanboy.
And I still say two play throughs is enough to at least have a vague idea of cutscene length. Especially if those cutscenes were exceptionally long.
Oh no, that's not how the game works around here. They're so defensive that even the mildest criticism of the Sony machine, or any game exclusively published on the PS3, is automatically perceived as being a pro-Microsoft scream.
Either you admit that the PS3 and it's games are more powerful than God and more attractive than Angelina Jolie, and have absolutely no negative points at all, or every time you post in here they'll loudly and repeatedly accuse you of only posting because you're deluded by the power of Microsoft.
Bear in mind that most of these posters are from the generation that did most of their intellectual growth post-Phantom Menace, and I think it all becomes pretty clear who's to blame for this.
Ah, gotcha.
Is it too late to side with Nintendo then? I've been a stalwart of theirs since I hung up my Master System II and got a SNES...
And Phantom Menace *spits* This is not a real Star Wars movie...

I was pointing out the irony in his post, not agreeing with his point.
Personally, I hate the term 'fanboy' anyway, and would never use it. I believe anyone that so blindly supports anything (especially a huge billion dollar corporation) to be utterly deluded.
