PS3 Firmware 2.4 out June 18?

"Unnamed sources" date PS3's next major update
PS3 Firmware 2.4 - the one we're all waiting for - will be out on June 18, claim "unnamed sources" in Holland.

Version 2.4 is expected to introduce the much-requested in-game communication features to the console, as well as an Achievement-point equivalent Trophy system and other goodies.

"Summer" is the only official word Sony has given on 2.4's arrival, with June heavily tipped. The June 18 report from Dutch site PlayStation Only claims previous rumours of a June 10 release are false.

It's all speculation until Sony gives the official word, which we expect will be any time now.

Regarding in-game XMB: what the hell took so bloody long? Surely it isn't that difficult to do, FFS, even Microsoft managed it on the 360. As for trophies.... who else is going to rip off achievements? They're a fantastic idea when implemented correctly, granted, but come on... think of something for yourselves for once, Sony.
AJDarkstar on 2 Jun '08
Let's hope so, eh? The 360 achievements and in-game comms have proven to be very popular this gen, so it should do Sony no harm to do the same. Fingers crossed.
Mark240473 on 2 Jun '08
Despite the fact I own a PS3, it would be pretty funny if 2.4 didn't come with in-game XMB. I think the story that announces that would have the highest number of comments ever posted.

As for copying achievements - the Xbox 360 is based on imimating successful, tried and tested methods and previous consoles, as is the PS3. I think the SixAxis is the worst case of copying a competitors idea - mainly because it does it so badly.

Anyone who whines about Sony imitating Microsoft needs to ask themselves if they are enjoying their analog stick, or d-pad, or shoulder pads/trigger, because that's imitation. Oh, and then they need to shut up, because it's boring.

I'm just waiting for Sony to impliment the RROD into the console. That's one of 360's most popular features apparantly

It would be both funny and upsetting at the same time if this new update turned out to be a damp squid.

Oh, and agree wholeheartedly with your last paragraph. Everybody copies. However, companies have to at least make the effort to improve on what they are copying. On that, we will just have to wait and see.

Agreed - Achievements are one of those things that I never expected I'd enjoy so much....I think Sonys 'Trophy' idea could be pretty cool too, guess it depends on how this pans out - will it just be a trophy for completing the game?, will there be several trophies for different tasks? (to be fair, some of the Achievements in some 360 games are ridiculous at best).

In game comms are pretty much essential these days(not that I use them much!)

Calm it down, we don't need another fan boy war starting! I hope this does turn out to have in game XMB, I think I've had to wait way too long for this feature to be implemented to be honest. I'm sick of having to go off games to read messages, although if my mates can see that I am on a game, why do they send me a message?

What we'll really get to see and use immediately is...
1. Ability to check / write messages without leaving the game.
2. Ability to have & modify a huge (universal) friends list for games to access.

Everything else needs game developer support, so don't expect to be able to go back and replay your old games with custom soundtracks & voice chat the day this update is released. First party titles & some 3rd party titles will be patched.

I'm sure just about every 360 fan boy in existence will be jumping on how all this stuff should have been on the PS3 from day 1, but going forwards, it is still the right thing to do for the rest of the year and following years. Its worth noting that not *all* 360 titles support custom soundtracks either, so fan boys on both sides hold on to your horses... Wink

EDIT - oops, apologies... Fixed.

Sorry i'm genuinely interested as to which title doesn't? Certainly I've never heard of one.

Anyway good news for PS3 owners if this does indeed prove true.

I ROFL at all these people who seem to think Microsoft were the first to ever have achievements in their games.

Microsoft may well have been the first to implement a system that converts achivements into a on-line point system (even then, I have a sneaking suspicion that they weren't... some PC MMORPG may well have beaten them to the punch), but achievements themselves have been around for YEARS, long before the first XBox was even a glint in MS' eye, let alone the 360.

The PS2 has a TONNE of games with achievements (the Ratchet & Clank series springs to mind), and there are already quite a few on the PS3 (IIRC Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted: Drake's fortune, and Devil May Cry 4 all have them).

I have to say, I dont miss in game XMB anyway. Who cares anyway. Its not at the top of my wish list.

Its a bonus if it happens, but I doubt ill use it.

Me neither.

I used to ignore messages while playing as most of them were invites to play other games. I since switched off the feature to be informed via pop-up of messages from other players and now just check my inbox between games to see if friends are still online.

I would be interested in the voice chat, though I don't think we'll see any serious improvements there. I was looking at my decent collection of PS3 games this morning and it occurred to me that over half my titles are PS3 exclusive. Of the multi-platform titles, I only actually play 2 online. Those 2 multi-platform titles both have voice chat built in on PS3.

The biggest benefit left to me, would be the ability to listen to custom soundtracks. The YouTube upload facility would be superb as I've been wanting to post my GT5P lap times somewhere. Anyway, neither of these features will be a given on the day of IGX's (In Game XMB) release.

same, normally i dont mind notices appearing saying who just came online or went off line, or you just received a message. but sometimes i do get annoyed if someone sends soo many messages at once, like 5-6 non stop telling me what using the subject line, maybe 1-2 messages is ok, but 5-6 is too far, why cant just send the entire message in 1 instead 5-6 just using the subject line? i will be glad to use the in game XMB so i can read messages while playing instead having to stop playing and quit the game just to read them (normally i read them once im done playing), especially GTA4 as you got that long loading screen before you play, no more of that.

You're clearly getting confused, these achievements on the 360 are the universal ones which carry over onto your gamertag (with the gamerpoints) and not just relevant for that particulat game you 'unlocked' your 'achievement' on.

Now al they need is for my 360 pad to work on the ps3....

Now there's a gem of an amazing idea. If only all current generation joypads were cross-compatible will all consoles.

Given that the PS3 pad and the X360 pad have pretty much the same button layout, it would be great to have the choice of using the X360 pad for FPS and driving games, and the PS3 pad for beat 'em ups and other face-button-heavy action games.

Too late now, I guess.

Erm... that was kind of my point. Try reading beyond the first paragraph, plz.

How am I "confused"? You play a game, you unlock an achievement, and then that achievement gets turned into gamerscore points. Note the "gets turned into part"; you don't turn something into what it already is, do you?

As an analogy, think of a job which involves targets, and where you receive a bonus to your wages for meeting those targets. The job is the game, the targets are the achievements, and the bonuses are the gamerpoints.
