EA has made "250 key improvements" to the 2009 version of FIFA, including improved responsiveness and a revamped collision system, reveals the first-look preview in the latest GamesMaster mag.
Among the improvements in the new FIFA, which is due out in Autumn, are "improved responsiveness that allows for quicker release of the ball, greater urgency in the off-the-ball running, a new jostle system that takes into account the strength of the players when going shoulder to shoulder and subtle animations that enable players to take first-time shots."
That's four out of the 250 then. Another of the 09 edition's biggest changes is a completely revamped collision system, which calculates speed, weight and power when the players collide, as each player will have their own individual strength and power stats.
This time around, the defender won't always win, and this could potentially change challenges completely.
Although GM notes the new system makes tumbles look far more realistic, it's not just a visual change. For example, if a tackle comes in and hits a player's standing leg there's a good chance he'll go down hard, taking him out of the game. But if the player is in mid-strike and gets clipped, he could lose his balance but continue running.
That's the current-gen version then. On the PS2 space, EA says it's focusing on tweaking rather than reinventing the game, although as with PS3 and 360 it's focused on making a more realistic collision system.
The Wii version meanwhile is set to feature multiple control methods, one said to play just like PES on Wii, another where passing is automatic and 'Footii' mode, an 8-aside, arcade-y Mii match.
That's your lot for now. For more details, plus the first ever in-game screenshots, check issue 200 of GamesMaster, which appears on shelves on Wednesday (or through subscribers' letterboxes right now).
Isn't that what they say every year? Improvements or not, they have acheived their goal of surpassing Pro Evo. Konami have lost all my respect for somehow managing to make PES worse and worse, year after year!
EA have done a tremendous job of rejuvenating the Fifa franchise, fifa 08 is miles better than pes08, Euro 2008 is also a cracking game. Id personally like to see improvements to commentary as it sucks and the placement of referees and linesmen in-game, it doesnt seem like a lot but would certainly improve the visual effect of the game imo.
I have to say, always been a PES fan but I played the Euro 08 demo & it was surprisingly good.
I still prefer the PS2 version of PES '08 but they keep messing up the next gen versions so I may turn to FIFA for my next/current-gen footy fix if FIFA 09 improves upon it even more.
Well, it sounds as if they may have improved the main thing that has always been my biggest peave about the FIFA games - those slow animations when passing or shooting...you could never fault the presentation, though.
I still want to know what Seabass has planned for PES. We all know that he has said that 2008 was a disappointment and that they'd revamp the game, does this mean that we won't see a PES in 2008/9? - well, the information is far from forthcoming and you'd expect some news if they want to meet an October release.
I expect they will release a PES 09 as they would miss out on a million-selling title franchise if they didn't, regardless if good or not. Fifa 08 is great, as you have probably heard me saying countless times, just 5 minutes ago I lost to bloody Siena as Juve in Serie A. I was on top for the entire game but just could not finish, losing 2-1 was hard to take. The great thing is Fifa 08 will always be a challenge. The only way to make football games better is to make them harder
As a self-confessed fan of the FIFA franchise, I'm glad they're looking into making the game more fluid by sorting out the animation delays, although to be honest it never really seemed that bad to me.
As for the Euro '08 game, I've heard some really good things about it but somehow with England not taking part in the real thing, it's kinda taken the gloss off the game for me!
I bought the PS2 version of PES2008 as it is the best version. It is a good game but I am becoming increasingly annoyed with Konami and their complacency with PES.
Being totally honest, there is hardly any difference between PES6 and PES2008. It seems as though they made it with a £100 budget or something so minimal changes were made. FFS Konami improve the Master League mode, improve the terribly outdated menus, improve the commentary and there are a million little things they could add in-game.
I'm losing my patience and could soon turn to the dark side and go with this new Fifa, as EA must be commended for making big strides to improve the game every year.
yea im glad they are improving it, FIFA 08 is the best football game to date (YES better than PES0
but like some have already said if they just added the referees it would be soo much better , i dont understand why they ever took them out, it looses a sense of charm...?
and please include overcast day a rain this time!??!

Overcast/Rain was in Euro 2008, so expect it in FIFA 09 along with other weather effects and pitch effects (muddy pitches were also in Euro and would affect passing).
Im a bit of FIFA fanboy .I just never saw the appeal of Pro Evo.Thought the PSP version was good fun when i was on the plane on my to Spain.I really only played the training mode.
Anyway.....i just wanna see 10v10 online be a pro mode.......
The only thing Fifa has going for it is its presentation. The "Be A Pro" mode was OK but that doesnt make a good football game. The only reason Fifa made up so much ground on the last ProEvo is because the last ProEvo made no effort at all. A better game though it was not. Just goes to show how far behind Fifa actually was. Hopefully Konami gets the finger out for the next one and sorts it out or else they might just loose out once and for all.
I had always been a critic of FIFA and very much a Pro Evo player. That all changed last year. Evo is now a mess and I have serious reservations as to how capable Seabass and Co are in making a suitable game for this current generation. They are still using the old gen engine and it is a shame to see a once great series become pathetic. I hope they bring out a great game though because competition is always a good thing.
As for FIFA, well done to EA for making a cracking football game. They could have sat back and counted the ££/$$ because they always sold well but obviously someone at EA Canada decided to rip it apart and start again. FIFA is now the only true simulation of football.
FIFA 08 was very enjoyable, but still had it's flaws. Euro 08 was an improvement, but again has a few flaws. But I am very confident that with FIFA 09 EA will cement their place as the best football game available, and I feel that FIFA 09 will be a stunning game.
If you had said to me a couple of years ago that I would be excited over the prospect of a new FIFA I would have thought you were nuts. Not anymore.....09 is going to be immense
For those of you that haven't played Pro Evo 2008 on the Wii I strongly suggest you try it. It's without any doubt the best football game I've played. Forget about the 360 and PS3 giving you nice eye candy, the Wii SKU gives you direct control of off-the-ball runs at long last. The game is immense.
I'd even say that it's worth buying a Wii console for.
It's not a surprise that EA are 'borrowing' the control method for FIFA 09, I'm really looking forward to trying it out...particularly as the online experience for the Wii FIFA 08 was very good indeed
