Guitar Hero: Metallica is real!

Spotted in Activision SEC filing by eagle-eyed analyst
Guitar Hero: World Tour, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: On Tour... could Activation possibly milk its peripheral rock series any more this year? Well yes, because it looks like there'll be a fourth game out within the next 12 months too.

Following in the same vein as the Aerosmith spin off - which lets you play through the career of the Walk this Way rockers - Guitar Hero: Metallica has also been spotted, and will be out on "multiple consoles" before the end of Activision's fiscal year (that's before March 31, 2009).

The game was discovered in a company SEC filing by Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Edward Woo. According to the eagle eyed man, the document said of upcoming releases: "In fiscal 2009, we plan to publish Guitar Hero: On Tour for the NDS; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: Metallica, and Guitar Hero IV across multiple platforms."

Obviously there's bugger all in terms of game details, but if Metallica is anything like Aerosmith then you'll be able to play through the band's career, and players will be able experience Metallica's entire career, nailing its rock classics as well as the odd track from "celebrated artists that the band has either performed with or has been inspired by in some way".

We're sure you'll agree that Metallica are far more appealing than Aerosmith, but we just don't have enough money for all of these...

Great news!

I can see at least 2 of these band-based GH games every year - I really can't see a problem if they want to milk it in a 'Sims' kind of way.

Bring on Guitar Hero: Queens of the Stone Age!

I do not agree that Metallica is more popular, you can't beat the wide market for Aerosmith with their blusey riffs and swaggering attitude, Metallica do have the odd tune, enter sandman, but honestly can anyone name more than three great tracks from them?
meady on 3 Jun '08
Great, they're going to end up milking the franchise worse than EA did with the Sims. Why cant they just put it all into one new game? Instead of all these little expansions?

Bet they charge full price for the bloody things too

Yeah - I'm not a huge fan of Metallica, but (like Aerosmith) they're a huge band.

I think this is why I like the band-based model - obviously, we won't buy every single version they churn out, but you'll be able to pick and choose based on the bands you like.

Sad But True
Enter Sandman
Hero of the Day (a bit soft, but always loved this)
Of Wolf and Man
Harvestor of Sorrow
Master of Puppets
For Whom The Bell Tolls

Never like One though, that can go jump.

I agree that there's certainly a point in that it'd be great if these were released at a 'mid-price' range (maybe £25-£30), but, we all know they won't do that.....

I think Guitar Hero is a great gaming model, so it lends itself to regular releases - a little bit of graphical polish and a bunch of new tracks and the fans are happy.

Sandman's the typical one that anyone who doesn't know Metallica always quotes.

They have a catalogue full of superb songs, the advantage being that they go from speed/thrash type songs to more mellow ones. Perfect for a GH game.

To add to Martys list;

One (cos I do like that Wink )
Sanitarium
Battery
Fade To Black
Unforgiven
Nothing Else Matters

As a fan I'm probably biased, although I'm the first to admit that they have produced their fair share of s**t over the years.
MisterBedo on 3 Jun '08
Are they going to get p**sy when their songs go up as downloadable content?
JimSteele on 3 Jun '08
Am I the only one wondering why crap like this isn't just as a download for GH4? Or 3? I mean yeah sure you might get areosmith jumping around on the background but who actually looks at this? I tend to concentrate on the notes Rolling Eyes

A brilliant example of how to milk something for all it's worth. GH...the next pokemon! Laughing
Robzy on 3 Jun '08
I like the sound of this, I can definitely see myself buying this one. What I really want to know is will the game support drums as well? that would be superb if it did!

for the list:
Damage Inc
Seek and Destroy
Whiplash

There could be some great bands to come up in the 'support' section as well. looking forward to this.
pherik on 3 Jun '08
There needs to be a Best of Indie bands version of GH. And that's British indie bands, for ex:
Bloc Party
Avalanches
James
Kaiser Cheifs
Concretes
Guillemots
Gorillaz
Happy Mondays
Stone Roses
Libertines
The View
Wedding Present etc.....

Yeah - but, depending on the amount of tracks on them, they could end up more expensive as DLC.

Probably not as they won't be free.
VIKINGMETAL on 3 Jun '08
Ok but although ive heard of metallica ive never heard them except for ONE on gh3 -- which imo is an awful song after about 1 minute its out of tune and the singin doesnt fit to the song

Wont sell well over here in the uk but will do in the usa

Couldnt they have done like Guitar hero - Jet

As long as they stick to the first 5 albums or so, there shouldn't be a bad track on there!

It'll do more than well over here. I think you have to expect that they're going to pick bands that are big international acts and certainly big in the States (certainly wouldn't surprise me to see a Kiss version coming out - once again, not particularly known over here, but enormous in the US).

It's the same reason why you'll probably never see one dedicated to bands like Jet - they just don't sell enough albums (plus, it's a limited back catalogue to pick from).

If we're picking out ideas, how about a Seattle one? - Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam?....more than enough variety and great riffs for everyone!

I can happily buy this game. I love me a bit of Metallica. Their songs suit the game superbly and they're the most requested band for these games, so obviously a lot of people will lap this up. They have so many good songs, one has to wonder if they'll have room for other acts (wouldn't it be funny to see Megadeth on there lol).

Rock Band has just under a year to p**s all over Guitar Hero's parade and offer the whole back catalogue as DLC. If they can put a Judas Priest album on there, then they can do Metallica's albums.

... I won't say anything about the quality of the bands you just listed, but I will mention that several of them don't meet your criteria, i.e. "British indie".

For starters, the Avalanches are an electronic music group, and James, the Stone Roses, Gorillaz and Happy Mondays are all alternative rock bands (though the last two mix other stuff in, mainly hip hop and house respectively). The Concretes are indie, but they're indie pop rather than indie rock.

Second, two of the bands in your list aren't British: the Avalanches are Australian, and the Concretes are Swedish.

Also, any "Best of British Indie" must include contributions by Oasis (limited purely to songs recorded before 1998, of course) and Feeder, or it's automatically s**te.

Please Please let there be a Foo Fighters Guitar Hero, they are quite popular seeing as they have sold out 2 gigs at wembley, not saying that is a reason for the game, but they are a popular band and have already been featured on the GH3
1589vaughan on 3 Jun '08
As much as I love the idea of a metallica GH, I really do like the fact that you get to play lots of different styles of song from different artists. I never realised how good AFI were until I played GH3.
I think instead they should do a series of genre packs. You could have a metal pack that has metallica, pantera, slayer (although maybe not, I'm still in pain from reign in blood) and so on through to more modern stuff.
A british music pack would also be great, but I have to agree that no feeder (waiting for changes or descend for me), then no good. And it should also have caffiene bomb by the wildhearts.

Blackened, One, Wherever I May Roam, Master of Puppets, Battery, Nothing Else Matters, Sad but True, Seek and Destroy, Ride the Lightning, Creeping Death, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Fade to Black. Need I go on? Besides the whole point is providing more songs that are fun to play and or challenging.

Well tbh guitar hero download content sucks anyways the songs are usually bundle into 1 good song and 2 crap

Rock band has it right releasing single tracks

Bring on guitat hero world tour - if thats the final game great will buy tons of songs but if they are gunna release 2 games every year sod off

That would probably be the worst GH game ever, the same riff repeated 50 times to some crappy high pitched squealing lyrics would make a very boring game.

I suppose Activision are waiting for the chance to make GH: Led Zeppelin or GH: AC/DC, now they would be good games (but GH: Led Zeppelin will never happen!)

Yeah, Zeppelin is obviously the ultimate. There were rumours of the Beatles getting their own version, but I think it's only going to be the really huge bands with large back-catalogues that will get their own edition.

Perhaps:

GH: Queen (which would probably turn out to be brilliant and I imagine it's something they could do - didn't Brian May do the music for Rise of the Robots, possibly the worst game of all time?).
GH: AC/DC (could possibly end up a little dull, great band - but, it is the same song over and over again).
GH: Guns N' Roses (got a sneaking feeling that this could be next).
GH: KISS (as I said earlier, huge in America - would look cool with all the makeup too!).
GH: Rolling Stones
