Mystery developer working on BioShock PS3

Plus new screens from the re-worked version
An as-yet unnamed third-party developer is working alongside factions of 2K on the much-anticipated PS3 conversion of BioShock, reveals Sony.

Heading the project is 2K Marin, along with 2K Boston and 2K Australia. Alyssa Finley, executive producer at 2K Marin said: "Because this is the first PS3 title from 2K Marin, 2K Australia and 2K Boston, we've also got another development partner with some outstanding PS3-specific coding chops helping out with the project."

Which developer that is, however, will be revealed in the future, she added.

Finley's also opted out of revealing what the "new features" promised in the official announcement will be, only teasing that members of the 2K Boston are "hard at work on some of the as-yet-unannounced components of the PS3 version.

"In the future, we'll go into more depth about what's different and what's new in the upcoming release," said Finley on the official PlayStation Blog.

Finley told PSM3 magazine (issue 102 on shelves tomorrow): "Sony have been tremendously supportive, but we don't have anything we can talk about yet. Anything new that we do is going through the same collaborative process that we used to make the original BioShock."

New screens of the PS3 version are below.

Yes yes, ok I admit it. It's me, i'm developing it.

I'm inserting Captain Nemo, Aquaman and Godzooki to spice things up and make it even better than the 360 version.

I recon its either Naughty Dog or Santa Monica Studios. Either would be great in helping bioshock, and hopefully with Sonys full support, the ps3 version will blow the socks off the 360 version, even if it is a year late.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Is there going to be enough extra content to make it worth the extra year? With top releases such as COD4, MGS4 and GTA4 ruling the roost, is BioShock as relevant as it previously was?

I mean, there's no doubt it's a great game, I personally loved it, but c'mon, the 360 version can be had for less than 20 bones now.

Too little too late? Well that remains to be seen. I just don't think it will do as much for PlayStation as it did for the Xbox last year.

i dont think it will be any better than the 360 version as the PC version was no different. if anything, not using the original developers is a bad thing - see hl2 on the ps3 for more info.
pishers on 4 Jun '08
is it just me or are those PS3 screens missing details like bump mapping and other effects. Look at the fire and some of the textures...hopefully this is up to scratch as I really want to get this game for my PS3 since my PC can't run it.

why is it important whos developing it? its just a port of the 360 version isnt it?

Orange Box is 'just a port' of the PC version... look how well that turned out when EA tried to port it.
MrXBob on 4 Jun '08
Actually, The Orange Box on the PS3 isn't bad at all. Don't believe everything you read on the gaming press.

I've had it on both the 360 and the PS3 and there is very little difference between the two. Those comparison videos from sites like GT only showed clips of the PS3 version while it was Autosaving, causing a little framerate jutter. Which is why I no longer bother watching their crap videos. Especially after they got busted with the GRID balls up.

As fun as it is killing little girls when they try to crawl away crying, I never enjoyed playing BioShock much. Or maybe that was a dream. Hmmm...

I think it was a dream. When I try to kill the girls a massage pops up saying that I can only harvest them or let them go. I was dissapointed Mad Maybe the new thing in the PS3 version will be the ability to smoke them LOL
evilfoxhound on 4 Jun '08
I think the secret developer is Dale Winton.
Suivaloom on 4 Jun '08
well, insomniac is opening a new studio in north carolina. And she talks of a developer with great ps3 code. It could be their nocturnal initiative...?? thoughts anyone..

Well, this could be a difficult port for what ever developer takes it on.
It does after all use the Unreal 3 engine which is known for being a bitch to optimize for PS3 and has caused many game delays.
Let's just hope it's not EA... Laughing

It's called a comfort zone. Most developers, mostly american, are so used to coding for the PC/360 that the thought of learning something new either scares them or is beyond their ability. Insomniac and Naughty Dog have proved what talanted programmers can do with the PS3 hardware. The others are just scared that they won't be able to handle it.

s**t, look at what PD have done with GT5. So far the best graphics I have seen this gen.

the internet is so saturated with Sony/Playstation hate thats its hard for logical deduction to sink into the masses evilfoxhound. someone commented about the Unreal Engine 3 and PS3 up above, as if UTIII doesn't exist in graphical glory on the PS3.

yes but the point I think was trying to be made was it is more difficult for developers to get UE3 running on PS3 as opposed to 360. If done right though, as with UTIII, the results are fantastic

It does just seem though that every story released last week on here was just bait for a fanboy war. Makes me sad really
jayson_90210 on 4 Jun '08
My guess is Insomniac, if you look at the ps3 games available then insomniac has 2 great games available with R&C:FTOD and R:FOM. Ye not everyone likes them but they are good. Plus I remember reading someone from Insomniac saying that game developers should share tools for the better of games

Well that's your opinion to say so, without having done any PS3 development. Your opinion doesn't actually matter though because all that counts is the quality of the final product.

Surprisingly, what no-one here seems to have mentioned is that the intention with BioShock is to make it the best version of the game - on any platform with the additional content.

In case you hadn't read today, Sony have redistributed some resources (canning a couple of games in the process), to ensure quality of other releases. Sony knows that certain crappy ports have done the PS3 a disservice and when Sony pays good money for exclusives (ahem - Haze - ahem) only for the developer to screw up, then that's not good enough.

If its needs a special team of developers to show people how to write code, then so be it. Sometimes you have to get in people's faces and really show them. The Haze developers could have used Sony's support, they didn't even bother and look how it turned out.

Anyway, if the end result wow's you - the consumer, then what have you got to complain about?

Yer u mentioned Haze there, & look at the other ports that have come to the PS3... not much quality in the final product aye?. Look, its widely know that the PS3 isnt the easiest thing to work on, that maybe because its new technology, learning curve an all, but developers are obviously struggling, which is strange when u see the Naught Dog engine....

I've played it on both, bought it on the 360. I'm sorry, but the 'vaseline' filter used on Portal to compensate for the lack of AA was an absolute disgrace - it almost made me feel short sighted, it was that blurry.

hahah i love the way that most developers wont touch the PS3 with a s**tty stick!.... god, is it really that bad?!?...

Instead of blaming the developers, why not blame Sony for designing such complicated architecture? Multi-core CPU's are still a relatively new item in the gaming market - infact, it's rare that you will find a PC game fully optimised for more than 2 cores. Sony forced a very powerful, albeit specialised multimedia chip (The Cell) into a games console when it's really not the ideal environment for it to be placed.

the internet is so saturated with Sony/Playstation hate thats its hard for logical deduction to sink into the masses evilfoxhound. someone commented about the Unreal Engine 3 and PS3 up above, as if UTIII doesn't exist in graphical glory on the PS3.

Yes, but this was done by Epic - the designers of the Unreal Engine. The amount of knowledge they have with regards to the engine (and constant new builds) opposed to external developers (who most likely get monthly or bi-monthly builds) is quite significant. However, on the other side of this argument - this game runs at (the equivalent of) MEDIUM settings on the PS3 at 720p/30fps - it can be ran on high at 60fps on pretty much any reasonable graphics card released in the last year and a half. It's far from being a shining example of power.

To be honest these screenshots of Bioshock (as well as the previous ones from the announcement) are nothing short of shocking. The step back graphically is quite large - lack of bump mapping, poor particle effects, heavy aliasing, and muddy textures. The screenshots aren't even 720p - and downscaling an image generally makes it look better (most bullshots are rendered at insanely high resolutions, then rescaled to give a much crisper look, and hiding aliasing issues). So I really hope these developers get their acts together. PS3 owners deserve to play an excellent game the way it was designed, not crippled.

Agreed, the PS3 is supposedly a bit of a pain to develop for (just look at the crappy ports we've seen in the past!) but Epic did say that the Unreal Engine "ran better" on the PS3. I'm assuming it just takes a lot of hard work and diligence to get all the coding, AA, etc properly in place - things that the 360 has managed to streamline more effectively.

He said the UE3 is difficult to optimize for the PS3 and causes delays; he didn't say that it's impossible to get it running properly or that it looks like crap.

Think before you post.

I suggest you take your own advice!
