Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi says Capcom has made no concessions to the original vision of his game, despite accusations of racism.
When the trailer for RE5 debuted last year, numerous onlookers took offense to its depiction of race. Set in Africa, the spot showed the white Chris Redfield blowing away black villagers, who (presumeably) had been infected with a zombifying virus of some sort.
Criticisms of the trailer's representations of Africans came from people of varying ethnic backgrounds across the Internet.
Asked by Kotaku if those criticisms affected the design decisions of RE5, Takeuchi said, "No, not really."
Since that original trailer, Capcom has released new footage for the game depicting a non-Caucasian, ethnically ambiguous female partner. Takeuchi said that the diversity wasn't a reaction to critics, and the character has been in development "pretty much since the beginning."
He continued, "In terms of the reaction, we're in the business of entertainment. We didn't set out to make a racist game or a political statement. We did feel there was a misunderstanding about the initial trailer."
Funny how nobody ever complained when it was white people getting massacred in the first 4 Resident Evil games. This world is full of ignorant and hypocritical individuals. It was obvious they were going to include a black partner that Chris was going to team up with at some point during the game. Just like they did with Luis Sera in Resi 4.

The game is set in Africa. Did they expect white people with a strong British accent running around being shot. I think if they didn't have black people in it, critics would pan the game for not being authentic enough.

This is not even an issue. It is just a game set in Africa, so naturally the zombies are black. What is all the fuss? There is no fuss, and Capcom are right to stay on course with their original vision.

Hey, just thought I'd reply on this. As a black Briton, I would say, yes, I did feel initially upset at RE5 trailers. Why Historical context, plus the fact that I get reminded color is an issue by the less friendly Caucasians in society. #
This context is particular to me an any person of color, which is why I didn't raise hell on RE4. However, if britain had enslaved Spanish people for 400 years, and the main character in RE4 was British, I'm certain that game would have a hard issue seeing the light of day in Barcelona. Similarly Medal of honor games never did well in Germany. Not a lot of Germans like being shot at. Surprisingly I don't think COD4 will ever be a middle eastern hit. Plus I'm not sure a lot of brit will buy the next medal of honor if it were about a Japanese soldier tearing through British /American heroes armed with one sword, even if it being developed by Hideo Kojima/Free Radial/Cliffy B/Shigeru. Finally If the next Resident Evil features a German infiltrating an Israeli zombie town, CNN will kill it. The UN, EU will ban it. Capcom will die a very public media death. Having said that, I'm buying the game. Something tells me Capcom scriptwriters will not have the subtlety needed to traverse this minefield. Unintentional racism get!

I'm not black. but I have had experience of racial hatred and although I'm mature enough not to let it bother me, it's still a horrible thing.
Imagine a game with a blond-haired, blue-eyed protagonist, set in Israel or a Jewish community in Europe, where the player-character shoots down infected wild-eyed Semitic people... It may not be racist, but that doesn't mean it can't be reminiscent of racial atrocities.
Not to mention that the depection of blacks as 'savages' is found in literate and imagery from that colonial period..

That's not entirely true. I mean, 50 Cent's new game, is set in the middle east. Black rapper shooting iraqis. Ths Shame. A lot of Journos and mass media are tearing into him for it. As for Grand theft Auto, San Andreas, there weren't only white people fore the black avatar to run over. it was an entire town, fully representing all traces creeds and colors in good and bad lights. It wasn't like 'black guy stuck in evil zombie white town and must kill everyone,' which is the basic plot of re5 reversed. Plus: San Andreas has possibly one of the best video game scripts. I think reason resident evil outbreak was never mentioned is because there isn't a real world context to it. You don't see a whole bunch of emancipated white people on telly every time bob geldof tries to resurrect his career, do you? White people aren't disenfranchised, represent most major world powers (save china) and control most of the wealth. Black people, all come from a continent that is ravaged by war, famine, greed, poverty and disease. In a lot of African countries it's like Armageddon. I thought that this was set in Haiti? - if so, I remember that they complained about their representation in Vice City, to the point that the missions were editted.
If I recall correctly, they objected to being portrayed as a nation of drug dealers....which is fair enough, but I don't remember getting that feeling about them when I played the missions through.
It's always going to be a touchy subject, but I think Capcom should have shown some publicity shots of the white enemies within Resi 5.

I do really like Soldier Of Fortune (the first one). At the time it was unique...simple but definately a blast to play through.

All I can say is that I don't speak for the nation or even a group of people, but only for myself. One can only express his thoughts and feelings in mear words - crudely. Ah yes, true. Hell, I'll go as far as mentioning Miami Vice on the commodore 64, or even Mike Tyson's Punch Out, which had a ear biting black rapist as the main boss character. Why didn't anyone complain? 1. Mike Tyson was a boxer at the time, and the game just so happened to be about boxing, not Batter Raper 2
2. Miami Vice was based on the series. So context good there.
3. Both games you mentioned I'm certain had black and white characters. Balance issues sorted. 4. Gorillas are not known for kidnapping Princesses. going off topic here: When i first saw the trailer like a year ago i thought it was an awesome idea for the story as i thought a pharmaceutical company or smthg is testing a new drug in africa (which i think actually does happen)and theres a bit of a funny side effect but whatever it seems those damn las plagas things are back

Video games, like TV shows and Movies and comic books, are very simplistic and narrow in their portrayal of people and their cultures/races/religions, so will always come under attack when they use other races such as Africans. Which is a good thing, as without it they could easily be misrepresented and abused, leading to racist attacks, just look at the way the Nazis depicted other races in their propaganda.
But it would be a shame if these accusations of racism in video games were to put developers and publishers off using other races and cultures in games, as more diversity is needed, not less.

like i have said time, and time again I AM GOING TO BUY RESIDENT EVIL 5 BECAUSE I LOVED 4, REGARDLESS OF WHO I SHOOT (although I might let the zombies eat Chris every now and then) And yes I am aware of the slavery going on in Africa, now. I am a member of three anti slavery charities, and I recently as last year performed for an Anti Slavery gig (I'm a spoken word artist). Supported Razorlight and all. So yeah, I do try. Maybe not as much as I should, but I try. I get to read lovely tales of slavery all the time, and I guess the reason why we harp on about white/black is because it was recent/institutionalised and rationalised on a major scale. The overwhelming population of blacks in America are slave descendants, a million times more than any former slaves in any islamic country (I actually know a kinda funny story involving slavery in North Nigerian history).
And while I understand the need for escapism, doesn't that tie better for games like mario, pokemon, world of warcraft, or even gta4, rather than REALWORLD SETTING + DIFFICULT CONTEXT- DECENT BALANCED SCRIPTWRITING= RESIDENT EVIL 5? where's the escapism there? Ah, I'm with you there mate. As I said earlier, the reason why nobody in their right mind goes after rockstar (discounting scapegoat mass media) is because 1. they show all people in a balanced manner, i'e good and bad. 2. The scriptwriting is top notch. Possibly one of the best in videogames.
Capcom on the other hand, while making great games, can't write to save the ozone layer. We're talking 'master of unlocking,' level dialog, here. I have no faith they can write about a topic like this without falling into the regular videogame cliche of bad/good kill. Which, when slapped on a current issue context like Suffering African fed drugs acting like mobs being shot down by lone white guy can be construed as racist, intentionally or unintentionally. well, i'm not sure how it is in the rest of the world, but in American racism is neither dead nor a moot issue. granted, it isn't nearly as predominant as it was before the Baby Boom, and i'm not saying that progress hasn't been made (a black man recently won the Democratic bid for presidency, for instance), but it still exists at levels that can be perceived by the public at large, on both ends of the spectrum. 95% of America's history is mired racism, and as recently as 40 years ago most states had racists legislation. heck, as recently as 15 years ago there were laws forbidding interracial marriages. this is way too recent to simply be swept under the rug as something only sensitive blacks concern themselves with. racism (in America at least) is an issue, and it does exist. personally i think time will be the only remedy for it. it is still too near for some to simply forget and forgive, especially since you have a lot of people (both black and white) that have experienced it multiple times even to this day.
now that all that's out of the way; i could be alone in this regard, but with me i judge things based on intent as well as action itself. to me, racism has to be intended for it to be racism. i do not believe it was ever Capcom's intent to evoke racism with Resident Evil 5. while i can understand why some would view it as racially charged, it would be ignorant and propegating racism further to simply ignore the intent behind it.

If you notice Resident Evil 5 also has white caucasians in, so also represents a local community. San Andreas, Bad Boys, True Crime NYC all had a Black protagonist who could shoot down and kill white civilians. Bad boys may not have shot innocent everyday civilians but they did shoot at both black and white criminals, not zombies, not parasite infected bodies but everyday human-beings. True Crime also had you beating up and shooting black and white criminals. And San Andreas let you walk around and kill any white person you wished, innocent civilian, police etc whether or not it had a great story is irrelevant.
A lot of women haven't experienced carrying a baby so I guess their opinion doesn't matter either right? I guess my thoughts on drugs hold no value until I snort a line and experience it first hand. I do think before I type and I'll happily back up what I say and admit when I'm wrong.

More disturbing I'm sure you will agree is the strong evidence of continued slavery within Africa today particularly concerning Benin, Burkina, Togo, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Sudan and even closer to home for yourself, Nigeria.
If you really feel a need to tackle the issues of slavery then why don't you focus your efforts on doing something about current slavery and really make a difference rather than get p**sed off about something that happened hundreds of years ago?

like i have said time, and time again I AM GOING TO BUY RESIDENT EVIL 5 BECAUSE I LOVED 4, REGARDLESS OF WHO I SHOOT (although I might let the zombies eat Chris every now and then) And yes I am aware of the slavery going on in Africa, now. I am a member of three anti slavery charities, and I recently as last year performed for an Anti Slavery gig (I'm a spoken word artist). Supported Razorlight and all. So yeah, I do try. Maybe not as much as I should, but I try. I get to read lovely tales of slavery all the time, and I guess the reason why we harp on about white/black is because it was recent/institutionalised and rationalised on a major scale. The overwhelming population of blacks in America are slave descendants, a million times more than any former slaves in any islamic country (I actually know a kinda funny story involving slavery in North Nigerian history).
And while I understand the need for escapism, doesn't that tie better for games like mario, pokemon, world of warcraft, or even gta4, rather than REALWORLD SETTING + DIFFICULT CONTEXT- DECENT BALANCED SCRIPTWRITING= RESIDENT EVIL 5? where's the escapism there? Surely, if you wanted to see emancipated and degraded to the point of looking barely human black people on your HD screen, you'll watch CNN? Or is the escapisme that you can shoot them?
steady on there fella, you're barking up the wrong tree with me. i have been to africa several times and i think it's a wonderful continent, and had some of my best experiences ever there. i support an asian charity so i'm trying to do my bit. you were close to accusing me of harbouring racism in your last post and that's very misinformed and well out of order. it only fuels stereotypes by doing things like that.

This issue is the most embarrassing thing i have seen in video games. I have always lived on respecting others and only treating people as they do onto me. I have never been racist and i don't see why its brought up so many times. This is the latest in what i would call embarrassing. I noticed a guy on this thread saying he would play San Andreas as the lead character is black. Well consider this. Resident evil outbreak lead character black this does not get mentioned when the media jump on capcom's back. I think it would of been worse had of capcom not put black zombies in resident evil 5. I think reason resident evil outbreak was never mentioned is because there isn't a real world context to it. You don't see a whole bunch of emancipated white people on telly every time bob geldof tries to resurrect his career, do you? White people aren't disenfranchised, represent most major world powers (save china) and control most of the wealth. Black people, all come from a continent that is ravaged by war, famine, greed, poverty and disease. In a lot of African countries it's like Armageddon. ' Rich powerful white guy kills dying evil zombie black people' is how most people who don't have the benefit of knowing Capcom aren't racists will see this, esp people with direct links to this particular context, i.e. me. Still getting the game tho.
First off zombies are the UNDEAD, so they aren't dying. Second, why do you assume that the games protagonist is rich? Because he is white? In what Resi game have you ever played as some rich guy? A poster mentioned earlier that it would be racist to not have black zombies in this game that is set in Africa. It would be completely ignoring a culture and it's people. Not having them there would be like ignoring their existence. Should we get rid of diversity in gaming? Since no one has issues with killing whites in games. There have been all kinds of attrocities commited by all sorts of people all over the world. The Spanish Inquisition, British Occupency of Ireland and the civil war that broke out in Ireland soon after, the Americans whole sale slaughter of Native Americans, the genocides in the Middle East and Africa that still go on, the Holocaust, and much more. Nearly every group of people have at some point wronged another. Getting hung up on past wrongs doesn't help anyone move forward.
Now I am a fan of Zombie films. And I must say just sitting here thinking a bit about it. Africa is a great setting for a zombie game or better yet a film. You said so yourself, Africa is war torn and unfortunately riddled with disease. It's like Armageddon you said. How cool would it be to see unarmed refugees who are shot down by War Lords to rise from the dead and devour thier killers. How cool would it be if the starving and diseased to die in a make shift band aid station only to rise again to tear the doctors and nurses to pieces. Also, 2 words Zombie Lion!!! This could be the best Resident Evil yet.... or best Zombie film yet.
Also the script for GTA SA was god awful. Not one of the best in gaming, not even close.

I'm of the opinion that people who draw attention to rascism are themselves rascist. By that I mean they don't see people as people but distinguish them by their skin colour and think that they should be treated differently as opposed to equally. Killing white Spaniards in Resident Evil 4 is apparently OK but killing black Africans isn't despite the fact that both peoples are native to the countries the games are set in. When I watched the Resident Evil 5 trailer last year, I can't say I honestly thought once, "Ooooo they're black people", I just thought they were zombies attacking in an obviously different setting from the previous games, a bright sunbleached daytime one. There are also several white zombies in there too, something I noticed on subsequent viewings of the trailer, following the outcry over it.
Of course, you could argue that Capcom could set the game in another country that doesn't have a high black population but isn't that in itself rascism, i.e. it's treating black people differently not equally because as we all know it's perfectly fine for us to kill white people? Perhaps it's because the main character you play is himself white but I still think there'd have been an outcry even if he'd been black because then they'd be accusing the developers of stereotyping blacks or something. It's very much a case of double-standards really IMO.
