CoD 4 maps finally out on PC

Variety Map Pack up for free for lucky Call of Duty 4 PC players
Patch 1.6 has been released for the PC version of Call of Duty 4, and the Variety Map Pack is finally available to mouse and keyboard gamers - for free!

The Pack includes four maps; Creek, Chinatown, Killhouse and Broadcast. The last one, in case you hadn't guessed, is based on the wicked single-player level in the television studio.

The rest of the changes in the PC patch are a bit mysterious for now, although it's confirmed that 1.6 adds "Hardcore and oldschool server browser filters" and a fix for Denial of Service attacks.

Infinity Ward revealed this morning that the Xbox 360 map pack has been purchased by over 1.5 million players, which must've made them a lot of money.

Get the PC patch here.

so did all you 360 cashcows enjoy your 2 month exclusivity? was it worth it?

you all endorsed the idea of dlc :"oh but it adds lifespan to a 4 hour fps", "cool, now i can give activision even more of my money,it's such a good game that i don't mind being charged for s**t that should be free" and now it's come back to bite y'all on the bottom.

my mate's (captain clive, evening sir) got the pc version and as soon as the map pack was announced for 360 he said "give it a month or two,let the console sheep pay for the dev costs and it'll be free on the pc. there'll be a riot if they dare fleece their core/old fans for this kind of s**t"

too f**king true lad.

WELL TBH I AINT TO p**sED AT THE FACT PC GAMERS GET THE MAPS FOR FREE.

I BOUGHT THE MAPS ON DAY ONE(ALL BE IT TAKING LIKE A DAY TO DL LOL ON 360) AND IT SEEMS LIKE THEY HAVE HAD TO WAIT FOR AGES FOR THEM. SO I SAY FAIR ENOUGH
skinedd on 4 Jun '08
Well, you could look at it this way, that the people who purchased the map pack for the PS3 and 360 paid for the devs time and skills - so the PC could have it for free *ahem*

Good on the PC brigade. I don't mind paying for the content on my console. It doesn't make me a mug though.
bigrednumpty on 4 Jun '08
I didn't buy the maps for the PS3 as I thought ÂŁ6.99 was too much, now that PC gamers have it for free (which is fair in my opinion) I'm even less likely to pay.
robbiej55 on 4 Jun '08
The map pack was a rip off, if they were charging a couple of quid I think it would be worth it, but 800 MS points was just s**tting on everyone who bought the game on day one!

They know PC Gamers wouldn't put up with this BS, so I'm glad to see it's free.
funkyjack on 4 Jun '08
with mod tools already out for cod4 on the pc trying to get us to pay for a crapy map pack would start a war.
pieman on 4 Jun '08
^ But the maps in the pack aren't "crapy" ^

It would do you well to thank all of the console players for buying the game at all, let alone the map packs. If it was not for them you may not have COD4 at all! How many copies have been sold on PC?

i should thank myself? well it's the first time i've ever heard it called that. Very Happy

i had the 360 version right up until the map pack came out but by then i'd played my friends pc version with 50 player support and mod tools (both single player and multi') that allowed some users to add carentan etc.. and decided that the console version was an inferior port.

being charged for maps that are clearly designed with more than 12-16 players in mind on top of the fact that the RRP of the pc version was some 20 pound less for a far superior version was too much for me.
i installed cod 1 on my pc (my only pc game),played 2 on 360 and let cod4 360 version go.
ste hicky on 4 Jun '08
Didnt buy it for PS3 either, should be free for all.

Four maps 6.99, you can stick it up your bottom Actiward!!

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you, will those 1.5m be so willing to buy another four maps for 6.99 again? probably not, now they know it was free for PC!!
Barca Azul on 4 Jun '08
Being used to fan made mods and maps back when I played my games on PC I have a rule against paying for map packs and such...

So I didn't buy the CoD4 map pack for the PS3, and I won't ever pay for any map pack or item in the future either.

All credit to Epic for their PS3 mod support on UT3 and releasing their official map pack for free.

Probably as much or even more as CoD 1 and CoD 2, mate. You know, CoD originated on PC and even though Activision skipped CoD 3 for PC, us PC gamers are still a loyal bunch as the game is present even now in most top10 PC charts all over the world. Might just be a few million sales perhaps and not as much as the console sales but that's not the point, it's likely more than profitable enough on PC for Activision and Infinity Ward, especially if they keep asking such an absurd high retail price for the PC version. I still see CoD 4 in most retail shops for prices as high as €55-60, as if Activision (or are it the retailers) think they can ask the same price as on consoles.
Togra on 4 Jun '08
Anyone who paid for the maps on consoles is supporting being ripped off by console owners & publishers. A fool and their money are soon parted.

No DLC unless it's free.
Mogs on 4 Jun '08
Went through this a few days back but I got attacked by idiots that misunderstood me, so I won't comment again apart from if I cared enough about PC gaming outside HL2, IL-2, Lomac, Farcry and guildwars I may have considered cod4, played the PC demo and it was ok but not much different to what I had already played on ps3 version so it didn't convert me back. I mean this in best possible way I didn't want to start a slanging match we all have our own preferences.

IT WASNT FREE ON THE PC, NVIDIA SPONSORED IT, so all those console heads moaning about having to pay STFU, you have a console M$ and Sony control everything about your console, of course there gonna charge in the same way as Epic wanted to release GoW content free for xbox and M$ wouldnt let them.
Its inherent in your platform that they( publishers and console manufacturers ) will squeeze every last cent from you

They probably had the PC maps complete for months, but theres no way they could charge for them when the PC has such a large modding community, no one would buy them( in the same way as no one bought the Battlefield 2 extortion packs )

sony seem a lot more relaxed about the whole free dlc thing than ms,you only have to look at unreal tourney for proof of that. also if i'm not wrong it doesn't cost anything to play online on ps3 so kudos to sony, for once.

this whole extra charges thing only seemed to turn up with xbox live last gen. now it's accepted as the norm instead of being rejected across the board as a con-trick.

i equate modern gaming to pre/post premiership football: it was fine in the first place,if a little more 'underground' and then the suits turned up,took it away, repackaged it and sold it back to us for more money than it was ever worth with more flashy lights but less quality.
now the kids might think it's cool but they're naive, some of us have been around a bit too long to fall for it.

(not the best analogy/metaphor,granted,but you get the idea)

Hmm lets see it bit us in the bottom?
Hmm...Not really see we don't have to put up with hacks, trainers, assholes, system requirements, and patching (its automated)

But look just because you prefer one way you shouldn't be an ASS because others prefer the other way...

So what I pay to play online and to get extra maps? I AIN'T poor so I can!
Just because your probably playing COD4 on a Athlon 1800+ with your 512mb ram and a GeForce FX5200 128mb PCI card at 12FPS maybe we choose otherwise!

(Don't start reading out your system requirements because I really couldn't give a gnats penis...

The last I heard it had sold around 500,000! That is far more than many PC Games (usually around the 100,000 mark) but they will not be making a big profit on that number.

They are not boring if you have not been able to play them! To PC gamers these are new maps just like they were new to console owners a few months ago. So unless the PC owner has COD4 on a console too (and bought the map pack) then the maps are not boring or old at all.
leefear1 on 5 Jun '08
Yep, this affected my choice with this. I had rented COD4 on the 360 for a few months. Then I heard about the chargeable map pack and downloaded the PC version illegally, and used a mates CD key, to see if I prefered the game on the PC. I did and promptly marched my bottom to the shops and bought a copy.

I saved myself Ł25 doing that. Brcause a pre-owned copy was only Ł19.99.
