Microsoft's president of entertainment and devices Robbie Bach has debunked internet rumours that the company will announce a Blu-ray equipped Xbox 360 later on today.
Speculation mounted over the weekend that Microsoft was planning to upstage Apple at its Worldwide Developers Conference later on today by confirming that the 360 would see Blu-ray by Christmas.
However, when asked by SF Gate whether the next generation Xbox would have Blu-ray, Bach responded: "No. There is nothing to even talk about right now with regard to the next generation. That is so far out that there isn't anything to talk about."
Of course, Bach could have chosen his words wisely, as he doesn't say *this* Xbox generation won't support Blu-ray. He does add, though: "Our plan continues to focus on high-definition experiences.
"Xbox 360 has a great ability to deliver those through the Xbox Live (online download) service. It's a great way to get the high-definition concept because it's right there. There's no additional media. There is nothing you need to purchase."
The latest edition of PSM3 claim Blu Ray as a PS3 exclusive - announced apparently by an executive from Sony Pictures. If true, MS won't be getting Blu Ray if they even wanted it..
Even if MS were to announce a BR peripheral to the 360, would their motivation for doing so really be because they think it would 'out headline' a mark 2 iPhone and iPhone online store? They're not exactly the same markets are they?
TBH, is suspect the majority's response to the MS announcement (whenever it might appear) would be 'meh'. The HD disk format wars are over. Done. And it's not as if MS hasn't done new versions of the 360 already. MS hopping on the BR bandwagon at this point doesn't really mean much to anyone other than MS.

really, even though Sony dont own the blu-ray format?
I honestly wouldn't buy a Blu Ray addon for my 360, I just don't see the point at the moment.
Unless MS suddenly decide they're gonna start pumping out the games on that format (which isn't gonna happen), I'll stick with using my 360 to play games and my DVD/Media box to watch films.
In a few years when it's all cheap as chips I'll probably buy a BR player. But I guess by then the next round of consoles will be on there way......

Really and there I was thinking Sony made/owned every thing in the world.

Thats exactly what I couldn't figure out. They don't own it, they were purely a driving force behind its development. Unless PSM3 know something we don't?
They're too late. Sony Pictures Senior VP, Simon McDowell said that "it (blu ray) will only ever appear on Sony's console" also "it was time blu ray game something back to Sony"
M$ would be mad to bring out another Xbox add on now anyway and should save it for another console.

what would happen if one of the blu-ray board members (samsung, panasonic, pioneer, LG, hitachi to name some) were to make the blu-ray drive for the 360? surely sony have no control over this? sounds fishy to me but maybe it is a timed exclusive.
Sony doesn't need any exclusive Blu-ray Disc deal and this is not a game that you can have timed exclusive omg. Microsoft will never get Blu-ray Disc support since they will have to resign the motherchip completely and also they make themselves look more stupid then they already and it will benefit Sony too much if they do that it help Sony's message that Xbox 360 is outdated in technology and it will just show consumers that PS3 is the system to buy. Also Microsoft will have to pay Sony royalty money if they ever want to have Blu-ray on another new Xbox model like the 5th one wow can you say confusion or what. And this is just another rumor by another fanboy that wants real technology aka Blu-ray Disc. Board members are all controlled by Sony Corp. in case you didn't know.
I can't really see the need for it at the moment, the 360 disc is enough for gaming at the moment and as for movies, well, let's be honest how many consumers are running out and buying a blu-ray player at the moment?
My dad just got a blu-ray drive for the media centre in the living room, and I linked up my 360HD-DVD drive and noticed no difference on the screen. Which we both thought was really odd considering all the hype about both formats. There is some difference over standard DVDs though, but then it also helps if the movie is encoded properly I suppose.
I think it will happen eventually, simply for a space issue, like what happened with CDs and DVDs.I can't see it happening this gen though, they don't really need it, and who knows by next gen maybe downloads will be better and everyone will move to that?
Has anyone noticed that fanboys have a really hard time spelling and can't use grammar properly
I have heard a lot of rumours recently about this, even some stating MS were in talks with one of the Blu-Ray manufacturers about the drive, it's a rumour until MS say it's real, can we just leave it at that CVG?
@Ivan_(I'm a pure fanboy)_PSP can you tell me the source that says the 360 motherboard would need to be redesigned and about the royalties? I would be interested in reading the article.

There isn't a visual difference between Blu Ray and HD-DVD. I think your getting getting confused somewhere. There's a improvement over DVD. Watch a film on Blu Ray then try to watch it on DVD.
Buy a Blu-ray Disc player like the PS3 before you start commenting huge trashy lies about it. Who ever thinks Blu-ray Disc is slow is just an ignorant idiot who doesn't know WTF he's talking about. Mandatory install is not a problem with can upgrade hard drive anytime with want without being rob like Xbox 360 owner are being rob from Microsoft. Before you said that when watching a Blu-ray Disc film and HD DVD movie you can't tell the different you might want to reconsider that buy a real full 1080p Sony HDTV hook it up the right way and test it again you will love Blu way more. Blu-ray disc is definitely the future the DVD is the past what Xbox 360 are screw with, soon developer will need more space to make better bigger games something Xbox 360 won't have.
Wow, all of you are commenting on the blu-ray possibilities but i'm honestly more interested in his claim that the new console generation is miles off!

I agree that DVD format on 360 is more than capable this gen, with huge 360 games like GTA IV, Mass Effect, Oblivion etc managing just fine. I honestly thought we'd start to see the PS3 pulling away both in graphics and size of it's games, but this doesn't appear to be the case. The 360 is easily keeping with PS3 with games like COD4, GRID and GoW2.
As someone else stated the 2x speed Blu-Ray seems to be more of a hindrance when it comes to gaming, with mandatory installs need in some cases.
I'm happy with my DVD upscaler to 1080i for watching my movies. Maybe I'll invest in Blu-Ray in a year or so when I upgrade to a 1080p TV and they start releasing recordable Blu-Ray for HD home camera footage. 360 has no real need for it though, even in add on form, all-though I wouldn't rule out the possibility of it being built into the next Xbox
look at GTA4 on ps3 and xbox both read from the disk,go larger in size islands for example and disk size is needed.Rockstar have gone on recored saying "we like blu ray size and are in talk's to make a game to use the full 50gb" but look at MGS4 konami was stated saying "we had to leave some thing's out due to the limitation of the disk size". Thats a big 50gb of game and I will have it by Friaday Who cares about the console war Nintendo are winning LOL,we bitch over the so called next gen one's. Remeber this ps2 best visual and game style came to in the twighlight years of the console's life.
And it still sell's can the same be said for the old original xbox?

There is nothing stopping one of the other blu-ray drive makers (LG, Samsung etc) to develop a blu-ray drive for the X360. The fact that you can buy a blu-ray drive for your pc shows that there is nothing stopping any of the manufacturers making drives for companies and organisations who would like them. Also the Blu-ray Disc board might be headed by members from Sony Corp but it is by no means controlled by them. The board has members from literally all the major electronic companies and I doubt very much they would let Sony tell them who they can and cannot make drives for. If they did trust me Sony would no longer be at the head of the board.
Having said that, from what I am aware of (although the situation might have changed) all the blu-ray disc's are made from factories which are owned by Sony. So even though Sony could not stop blu-ray drives coming to the X360 it could technically stop any games from being put on a blu-ray disc that is intented for Microsofts machine. A more likely scenario though would be that Sony would charge extra for disc's that are to be used by competitors, that way Sony would still make money.
But it doesn't really matter, I dont think that Microsoft are going to be releasing a blu-ray add on for the X360 or even bringing out a version with a blu-ray player inside already. I dont really think that the demand is there at the moment. If anything Microsoft might have one in its next gen console (by then hopefully there will be other companies making Blu-ray disc's no doubt), they might bring out a download only console (very doubtful considering the download speeds are still terrible). Or it might bring out a proprietary disc format (a bit like what Ninetendo did with the Gamecube). The point is no one knows this far ahead, not even Microsft. They are no doubt looking down every avenue and possiblity and hopefully go for the most suitable choice in their plans for world domination.... Oops I mean next console

I said we did notice a difference for DVD to HDDVD and Blu Ray, it was just difficult to tel BD and HDDVD apart
Any chance CVG could ban either fanboys or those who just act like they haven't complete primary level English yet? Or both?
