Turbine looking at console MMOs?

LotRO developer recruiting a 360/PS3 programmer
Turbine Studios is advertising for a new senior console engineer for either Xbox 360 or PS3.

No specific games are mentioned in the vacancy advertised on the company's own website, but it does call for the successful applicant to be involved with updating Turbine's own MMO engine and tools to consoles.

The engine currently supports both Dungeons and Dragons: Stormreach and Lord of the Rings Online.

Turbine has also recently received a cash injection of $40 million to develop new properties and foster development. Is the timing of the two purely a coincidence?

We certainly imagine $40m could go some way to solving the problems LotRO executive producer told us about when he discussed bringing the game to consoles last month.

Release a console MMO that has a one time fee for unlimited play or costs Ł40 per 12 months instead of the ridiculous World of W*nkCr*p that rips you off for a boring game...

Most, in fact, all MMOs end up turning into a grindfest at higher levels - it's one of the things that the genre brings.
But you know that if they bring an MMO to a console there will be a fee attached to it. I'd put money on it.

The good news is that unless the combat is player skill-based rather than character numerical "skill"-based I won't be interested. I'm sick of MMOs where you can totally suck at everything but do well simply because you have good equipment.

They'll probably bring the costs into downloading content.

Would porting LOTRO onto console finally give the game that edge over WoW?

Would porting LOTRO onto console finally give the game that edge over WoW?
Unprecedented move, to a position that Blizzard isn't keen to venture, with a compelling IP behind a game most of your friends list would probably snap up (remember, the game would look and run as good for everyone - so if you did buy the console game, you're going to get a wysiwyg experience)...I think so.
At the very least, such a move hugely ramps up the profile of LOTRO, and Turbine. They should get right on with it, asap. Smile

I dont think they would port over lotro, i reckon if you were to make a console mmo you'd have to start from scratch. Also with all the patches and updates a console would quickly run out of memory.

A console MMO would be way cool.
