Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi has divulged the first plot details for the next Africa-set survival horror instalment.
Speaking to Game Videos, Takeuchi revealed that after choosing to focus the fifth game's story on the origins of the Progenitor Virus, he had "no choice but to set it in Africa".
"The main reason that we chose Africa as the setting for Resident Evil 5 is actually from a clue that came up in Resident Evil: Code Veronica, where it was revealed that Africa was the original of the Progenitor Virus, which is the origin of all the viruses that appear in the series," he said.
"It's been ten years since the events of Resident Evil 1. One little hint we can give you is that Chris is no longer a member of S.T.A.R.S. and S.T.A.R.S. itself as an organisation is defunct. You might see a little mark on his arm that talks about the new organisation that he's a member of. Who that organisation is and what they're up to, that's going to be another important element of the story."
One question that comes up is about the series' overarching evil corporation Umbrella, and what exactly happened to it since the early games. "Certainly that will be a very important part of the game, to answer some of those questions," reveals Takeuchi.
"In terms of timeline the game does take place shortly after Resident Evil 4 and over the course of the game you will find out exactly what happened to Umbrella and certainly where the story is going to go from here for the continuation of the series."
Capcom's not ending it with five then? Count us surprised.
This is a series of games that could run indefinetely as far as i can see. Can't see why Capcom would want to end the series, evolve it yes, but end it no.
Now although i am VERY excited about this game, (on a scale of 1-10 its OMG-GIEF-IT-TO-ME-NOW!!) i cant help but notice in all the videos so far, a certain similarity to RE4.
For example, one shot where Chris shoots a zombie, he falls to one knee and then onto his face, with exactly the same animation as Los Ganados in RE4. Then of course we have the Chainsaw man. Baghead Mk 4 (Remember there were 3 different kinds bagheads in RE4: Dr Salvador, The Bella Sisters, and The BIG Baghead with the dual chainsaw motherfudging kill me on waterworld BASTARD!!).
Nonetheless ill be first in line come release day.

dont worry ive read in xboxworld that those are just placeholder animations from like you said resi 4, they will change them, yey

funny u should say that cuz i was thinking the exact same thing - i need to finish it on the wii so i can play seperate ways again (only played that the once - i know i am ashamed to admit)
but i have said before - THIS is the game i will be taking a whole week off work for STANDARD. no game can compete with this - NO GAME

The plot looks like more of a continuation to the series than 4 was, which is great. Excellent info, I'd be truly shocked if it turns out to be anything less than amazing.
Out of all the games coming, this is the one I'm looking forward to the most. Watched the latest video and its just made me want it even more! The only other games I'd go mad for are a true 3D DK and a new (albeit decent) Starfox game, with some Mario Galaxy beating visuals
