MGS4 to sell more PS3s than GTA IV, says analyst

PS3 sales storm expected to continue after MGS4 release
Metal Gear Solid 4 will drive more PS3 hardware sales than the mighty GTA IV did, say industry analysts, despite GTA IV having been the biggest-selling entertainment launch in the history of the universe.

Sales of PS3 are up 150 percent over last year and, according to Eedar's Jesse Divnich, this storming success will continue, and even accelerate, with the release of Konami's blockbuster.

"Sony's PlayStation 3 can claim a relative small victory as its hardware unit sales were up 150% over last year; additionally, they managed to outpace their closest rival, Microsoft's Xbox 360," said Divnich.

"This will likely continue in June as we expect Metal Gear Solid 4 [to] act as a bigger catalyst in terms of driving PS3 hardware sales than did Grand Theft Auto IV," he added.

This, he told GameDaily, is down to it being exclusive to the platform, exclusives having always historically done best for Sony's consoles.

Interestingly, Divnich also points out that PS3 exclusive games sell 45% more, throughout their lifetime, than multi-platform titles available on the PS3," while "exclusive titles for the other two systems, the Wii and Xbox 360, only boast a small increase in lifetime sales over multi-platform titles."

"Game available on two consoles sells less of one console than game that is only available on one console."

Wow.

Is there any job that pays more for doing less than this? I think not.

Well it certainly is making me smash open my piggy bank after GCSEs and buy one of those bundles...

I thought I'd end up buying one for GTA but no, MGS is now my fav non Ninty franchise.

"exclusive titles for the other two systems, the Wii and Xbox 360, only boast a small increase in lifetime sales over multi-platform titles."

What absolute horse s**t. The exclusive titles are the ONLY REASON to get a Wii... Galaxy, Brawl, Kart, Fit, Zack & Wiki, etc etc. Go to 3rd party multi platformers and they are almost universally absymal.

where the f**k do these guys get off stating such b******s.

whats worse is why the f**k do CVG feel it important to suck these analysts c**ks and report on it?

It's amazing how these guys are anal-ysts when they predict something derogatory about the lonely, black console in the corner and yet speak the truth when in its favour!
Tonyb on 13 Jun '08
Maybe he just means the PS3 version of GTA4, in which case I think he could be right.

It's a title the PS3 userbase has pretty much been banking on since the console's launch, so they'll go totally nuts over it. Japanese sales especially, since they don't seem to be too crazy about free-roaming titles and seem to love their scripted sequences.

I love that word.

Seriously any set of figures can be distorted to suit any body's purpose, hence Sony's reference to "PlayStation brand" when discussing NPD figures so they can justify adding sales of all there consoles and handhelds together to outsell the Wii.

He may be right. MGS4 has sold over 300,000 copies in Japan on the first day. And that figure does not include bundles. Cripes.

Wasn't their tale that they had to sell a million copies on opening day to ensure they recoup their costs - or am I totally misremembering?

yer that's probably the hardcore market in Japan done, as much as i love MGS (& i do, lots) its not a main stream game, people may buy it for the graphics, but i think casual gamers will struggle with the concept of stealth & not really enjoy it, let alone all the cut scenes & trying to get there head around the storyline!. MGS just doesn't have the mass market appeal GTA does. the Casual gamers i know who own a PS3 bought GTA on day 1, i doubt they even know MGS4 is out..

That is worldwide. If they sold 300,000 copies in Japan, which has the smallest % of PS3's than either Europe or USA, then I think we can safely assume that they have far exceeded the 1 million mark.
Mark240473 on 13 Jun '08
I agree with this guy if he means in the long run. GTA will be a game easiy forgotten (don't get me wrong its a good game but shortly sells will fall).
MGS4 is one of those games that sell very well at the start of its release and will continue to sell through the consoles life.
This can be also be said for gears of war for the 360. It sold well when it was first released and is still continuing to sell long after its release.
luigirules on 13 Jun '08
The one million MGS4 sell for first day was a error made by one of Konami's employee it doesn't have to sell that much but it will still exceeds that. GTA IV didn't move any consoles but this MGS4 is moving a lot of PS3. I currently own the 60GB PLAYSTATION 3 since January 21, 2007.
Ivan_PSP on 13 Jun '08
I think the release of both GTA IV and MGS 4 on the PS3 will drive hardware sales up from now on... why wouldn't they, they're both utterly superb games that are worth buying the console for IMO. There may still be many PS2 owners out there waiting for a chance to play these sequels which won't be available on their machine so it stands to reason that sales are going to improve. The release of any highly anticipated game drives up hardware sales, whether it's the PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii. The PS3 may not yet yet have the catalogue of quality games that the Xbox 360 has, having lost a year to its rival, but things are slowly improving and the machine now has more than ONE reason to buy it! I think Sony's faith has been well justified by this title, looking at the feedback on forums from those who've played it, its encoraging - its not only meeting gamers expectations, but exceeding them.

The next time CVG post an analyst's opinion that is clearly there only to flamebait, no-one posts a response.

As much as I despise gaming's analysts, he does have a point. I bought the PS3 when MGS4 released (yesterday!)and not when GTA IV did. Although I know I'll be playing GTA IV next. (provided that MGS4 doesn't ruin other games for me, which it probably already has)

You guys posting tripe about analysts do realize that they probably are the most important link in getting a game or should i say some of the great games you guys enjoy green lit for production right?

Guys like Michael Pachter who usually get about 70% of their analysis correct get paid the big bucks because investors pay these guys to forecast whats the next big thing and investors follow suit by investing in these game projects which would obviously never get green lit for production no matter how amazing the these dev teams are especially the talented smaller upstart ones.

e.g Most analysts predicted blu ray would win the war while Sony was strugling early last year with a low share price. Investors invested based on these assumptions when Sony borrowed a big chunk of money lasy year. The results were Blu ray winning next Gen HD standard player and those investors made a killing the next day thanks to Warner brothers when Sony share prices increased. The same goes for game development. How do you guys think the Crackdown Dev team got the millions of pounds investment 2 months ago that was widley reported to make the GTA alike MMO? Obviously analysts predict a GTA MMO to be a gold mine which they judge by comments made by you guys on forums and other relevant info like open world game sales, industry trends etc.

Anal - Lysts i think not.
AC!D on 13 Jun '08
OMG enough MGS4 will do beyond good plus I'm $100 sure it succeeded beyond Sony and Konami's selling dreams/expectation. This game is more than just great is PERFECT everyone else also thinks like that. GTA IV did awesome but it didn't help Sony's Empire in selling more PS3 neither did it help the dying Xbox Empire the, version i got is Xbox 360. All i know MGS4 is moving console bundle well they sold out already and 40GB model really fast. Sony has the most high profile game since 2007 which most are own by them which lead to one thing Sony has a lot of talent unlike Microsoft which just publishers game and love making Xbox 360 around one genre First Person Shooter all over hype crap... Most analyst are wrong anyways especially about gaming. Kojoma Productions is making Metal Gear 3: Revolver Ocelot for Sony's PSP.

No, just you:

First day sales of Metal Gear Solid 4 reach 1.3 million units worldwide, PS3 hardware boosted 180% in America

VGChartz can exclusively reveal that first day sales of Metal Gear Solid 4, released on June 12th 2008 in most major markets worldwide, were an impressive 1.3 million units. Over 350,000 units of the the latest installment of Hideo Kojima's famous series were sold in Japan (along with various PS3 bundles) and over 400,000 units sold in the Americas.

The American release of Metal Gear Solid 4, combined with the $100 Playstation 3 giftcard offer at retailer Walmart resulted in a 180% increase of Playstation 3 hardware sales. The 70,000 Metal Gear Solid 4 bundles supplied by Sony sold out immediately and with no confirmation of further shipments, it is expected that the hardware boost will be short-lived and PS3 sales will return to normal levels within the next couple of weeks. Many retailers have accused Sony of severely underestimating demand and suggest that they could have sold 2-3 times as many if the supply had been available.

Playstation 3 worldwide sales have more than doubled compared to last week.
