Len Wiseman, the chap behind vampire flick Underworld and Die Hard 4, is preparing to direct a movie based on Gears of War.
The director will be teaming up with writer Chris Morgan to develop the story and rewrite a new screenplay, according to Variety.
A previous script by Stuart Beattie, the original writer of the first Pirates of the Caribbean, will be discarded.
Fortunately, Epic will have some involvement. In fact, Cliffy B himself is the executive producer on the movie and will consult on its development for the company.
Distributor New Line had originally aimed to get the picture out in cinema's for summer 2009, but these recent developments mean a further delay is likely.
"It's like with our games, you can have it right or have it right now," said Epic Games topper Mark Rein. "We want to get it right. There's no timetable for us.
"We just want to make as good a movie as we can, and we think (Wiseman's) the guy who will do it."
Not sure about the scriptwriter. He creates some of the most stereotypical characters ive ever known. Although this will be faithful to the game I suppose.
But I loved Die Hard 4 & how OTT it was so it could turn out to be an entertaining flick.
Oh god. If they want to do justice to Marcus Fenix they're going to have to get something broad, flat, hard and with better voice talent.
I advise they go down to B&Q and get a board of MDF, staple a xerox of his fun-house mirror face to it and have the guy who voices Bender scream "COME ON!!" over and over again.
(And before anybody starts I actually love Gears of War. Correction, love playing Gear of War. The torturous walking exposition was just tragic.)

yep, agree. die hard 4 was an entertaining film, hopefully gears can be that too.
Im not sure about the script writer but if Epic games are happy then so am I . Im sure since Cliffy B is involved the film will not be able to stray that far from the game
A concern for me is, after that director allowed for Timothy Olyphant to be a pathetic and unconvincing villain in Die Hard 4 (where is anger limts only seemed to be shoving a laptop off of a table in slight effort), Fenix and the like will be big pansies.
How many "movies based on games" have ever... ever.. been produced a good film.
Zero.
No wait, Street Fighter rocked. The whole "Bison Dollars" thing was just genius.
To be honest I did like "Silent Hill". Not an Oscar winner but it was a good film.
You are joking right? Silent Hill is one of the best horror games ever created, the film was as usual an embarrassment. Although I've never seen it
But it is impossible to do justice to that game series unless the film is directed by original Ringu (Ring) director Hideo Nakata, not some American sycophant.
As for Gears of War, who should play Marcus Fenix? My money would be on Sir Ian McKellen : He certainly has the power to do it.
Script by Steven Speilberg. Directed by James Cameron.
Simple.
Oh no you dont! Cameron is doing Battle angel, he said he would...please cameron, hurry, no more distractions. Dont listen to these crazy people, do battle angel NOW!!!
Die Hard 4 was a GREAT action film, even if it was nonesense. Can i just say my opinion of gears is very low?...*Ducks for cover* Played it on PC and gave up the SECOND time it deleted my saves. I was at the bridge, fighting the thingy with missles for shoulders. God what an awful awful port
Isn't it odd how we never get a decent film based on a game and we never get a decent game based on a film?
Goldeneye N64
Ah, the exception to the rule....I must admit, I'd love to be able to think of anything else that has worked - even to a lesser degree than Goldeneye - but, I really can't!
Gears is a game very well suited to the big screen. I mean, the bloody storyline and characters of the game read like a typical hollywood blockbuster! I just wonder whether the 'badass'-ness of the game (ie, chainsawing enemies in half, the brute force of the combat and the size of the guys) translates well to real life film.

Chronicles of Riddick. Far superior to the film & one of my fave games last gen. Great game. After that though im stuck.

Thank god somebody else thinks that. I thought I was alone in detesting anything about Gears. Man did the dialogue suck! It's a triple-A title and nobody ever mentioned how cliche the whole thing was. A bad cliche at that!
The gameplay (that doesn't translate to film) and graphics were awesome, but coupled with the other crap... I'm expecting something like The Chronicles of Riddick from this movie.
I'd love to be proven wrong but they've not got much to work with.
SWEET! Those are two very fun, ridiculous action films, just like Gears.
My advice to everyone involved, just hire some massive (and i mean f**kin huge) wrestler type dudes and just don't give anyone more than 10 lines.
All I want is Brumaks, chainsaws, torque bow kills, grenade tags and more live rounds of ammo fired than Starship Troopers, Rambo and Predator combined.

I've heard that's good.
OK - howzabout Moonwalker? - your avatar gave me inspiration, plus it's definitely better than the film!
Goldeneye. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Alien: Resurrection Die Hard Trilogy
Those are the only games I can think of that were decent film translations. Feel free to add to the list!
OK...
- Moonwalker (as I mentioned earlier) - Robocop wasn't a bad game for the time (original arcade version, but I remember it being pretty good on the Spectrum too) - Spiderman 2
There are actually quite a few from the days of the Amstrad, Commodore, Master System etc - but, I could just be looking at those through rose-tinted glasses....but Platoon (Ams/C64 etc), Rocky (Master System) and Alien 3 (Megadrive) were all pretty good games for their time.
Underworld: Sh+t Underworld Evolution: Even sh+tter Die Hard 4: Comparitively sh+t Gears of War: Sh+t squared
What are you smoking die hard 4 sh+t did you watch it? its the best one out of the 4. Has for calling underworld crap, Its good to know that the gears film is in good hands.

Marlboro Lights
As I said it's comparitively sh+t (as in not as good as the other 3).
