Nintendo: 'several new titles for core gamers at E3'

Company set to fill the gap in their release schedule
Nintendo's director of public relations Marc Franklin has said that core gamers should expect great things from the company at E3.

"We will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in around the time of E3," he told GamePro recently.

Speculation has run rampant about Nintendo's release schedule near the end of this year. We're crossing our fingers for more Pilotwings, Starfox or Pikmin action.

Whilst the first half of 2008 was full of goodness in the form of Mario Kart and Smash Bros, the post-June line-up is looking a bit bare. Nintendo looks set to rectify this at E3.

Franklin also fielded a question on whether Nintendo's audience is now compromised of casual players instead of core gamers.

"The clear majority of people waiting in line outside retailers on Sunday mornings to buy their Wii consoles are core gamers," said Franklin.

Which surprises us on a number of levels, not least being that we didn't know people were still queuing outside shops for hardware. You can pick them up quite easily now, y'know...

Somehow I highly doubt my coregaming needs will be filled by the wii anytime soon.
King_Elshout on 17 Jun '08
But didn't Nintendo say recently there is no such thing as casual gamers?

So announcing new core games could be anything from a new Zelda to Cooking Mama

You wouldnt have to make statements about the fact you are creating games for core gamers if this hadnt already happened.

Sony & MS dont have to surprise us all by saying they are actualy making games for us gamers.

Yeah, because I'm going to be absolutely GOBSMACKED if Nintendo ever decided to show of games like Distaster, Kid Icuras, Pikmin, Fatal Frame, or even a new Zelda at E3. GOBSMACKED!

Come on.

No wonder Nintendo couldn't give a toss about the "Hardcore". They bitch that there's no games for them and then bitch when they're told some are on their way.

We're geeks so we have got to bitch. Geeks find fault with everything.

It's too bad not everyone is capable of showing your level headed POV.

They sure did! Nintendo's PR machine is so full of bull these days.

They don't seem to respect their "core" audience anymore and statements like the one this bloke made make it sound like they are almost clutching at straws. It's almost like they have to placate the "geeks"! Good news if it is a big game like Zelda, but at the moment I'm reserving judgement.
mooksam22 on 17 Jun '08
I've always expected that Nintendo would continue to produce the core goods.

Sure, they brought us Wii Sports/Play/Fit, Cooking Mama and Brain Training, but they've also brought us one of the finest Mario games of all time in Mario Galaxy, a proper Zelda, Metroid, and Smash Bros. I'd also include Mario Kart, but that kind of blurs the lines between casual and hardcore.

The fact remains that the majority of the casual games are not from Nintendo themselves but from third parties unleashing shovelware upon us...
milky_joe on 17 Jun '08
Core-gamers existed before the next gen PS3 and XBOX360. There is nothing technically preventing the Wii fulfilling core-gaming needs is there?

I like the Wii for what it does well, and for the things it lacks - I have a decent enough PC sitting a few feet away.

Nintendo should be worried about what happens when Microsoft and Sony implement clever new controller methods because then their appeal will wear thin fast.
Padua on 17 Jun '08
Actually I don't want a big title like Zelda, I'd much rather have much smaller but still quality titles. In the end I don't think a console is defined by the big titles (which the wii has plenty of) but instead the selection of games that aren't necessarily "must buy" but match up to people's tastes. I'd like to go to a game shop and make a decison over this game over that one, like I can do with my ds now.

At the moment wii games go into categories- "don't touch" and "must own", and its obvious which way the balance goes. (Not Ninty's fault, just third parties releasing a hundred crap games rather than one half decent one)
trgmr on 17 Jun '08
Pikmin 3 and Pilotwings, please. I'll even beg if that's what it takes.

So what is a core gamers needs anyway since even core gamers don't like the same types of games anyway, some like FPS some dont and so on!

So if there are going to be seven new titles for the Wii worth buying by a core gamer you should divide the number of games by 3 but what about the remainder! Confused

Anyway I just bought Okami last Friday for the Wii and I am defenatly buying Brawl when it comes out and Alone in the Dark looks pretty good as well.

I would say that the Wii offers games to core gamers whom's gaming thirst not being quenched by the type of games being released on the 360 and PS3 but it has always come down to taste anyway! Smile
seancuk23 on 17 Jun '08
This could be the best Nintendo news since the Wii was announced. What about making both a proper game and an original IP Go on Nintendo you can do it!
sammyone on 17 Jun '08

I completely agree. I can't believe Sony and MS won't implement a wiimote style controller, if not this generation then next.

Since getting my 360, the graphics for the wii (mainly apart from nintendo games) do look pretty shocking. If people are given the choice of good graphics and the wiimote or crapper graphics and a wiimote, I'm sure they'll go for the former.

Or of course Nintendo could have improved the accuracy of the wiimote more than MS or sony by the next gen...

I think more choice is the key. The Wii has plenty of choice in casual games - which I also enjoy - but what about more games like Resident Evil:4 ? I'd have liked CAPCOM to have commited to releasing a Wii version of RE:5 by now.

How is it that the DS gets Assasin's Creed whilst the Wii gets to look forward to some seriously silly titles Question

I thought hand-held consoles were supposed to be the kings of casual gaming Very Happy

Couldn't agree more with that.

I'm pleased that Nintendo have found that niche, but saddened because the games I enjoyed the most on the N64 and GC felt more story led. This is what I feel the Wii is lacking, for me. Games that interest me and have their emphasis on a plot and discovery.

Yes but we're only geeks because we want a hard drive for our wii's Laughing

I predict Goldeneye Wii with proper on-line deathmatch....well,i can dream, can't i? Failing that, some kind of Metroid on-line multi-player would be lovely. Really looking forward to E3 for Nintys' showing, could be something really special as we'll see proper Wii built from the grond up titles.
charliecheswick on 17 Jun '08
I want Starfox and F-Zero with some super Mario Galaxy beating graphics. They can do it as the Wii is capable enough, so they should
JuiKuen on 17 Jun '08
Here's what we need at E3 to bring a smile to Nintendo hardcore Gamers:

1) A USB Drive (I'm now struggling with Wiiware/Virtual Console and Channels - had to remove my Mariokart channel just this weekend to make room).

2) Updated Channel frontend to allow more channels i.e. A SNES Channel if you have more than one virtual SNES game etc.

3) Updated Opera to play AVI, DIVX, Mpeg, with Tabs and an official Wii Keyboard.

4)MII CHANNEL
An updated Mii channel and Mii Plaza to allow a lot more customization and variety IS A MUST. The Mii’s have proven how the concept of a simple digital avatar to represent the user and others has a lot of potential, and nothing beats playing in games as your own persona, however the current Mii channel is underutilised and now under pressure from Microsoft’s version due at E3.

The Mii channel requires a huge update to allow for the following:
An option to change or customize the bodies shape, not just the height and width. In Wii Play, TV Gameshow and Smartypants the Mii avatars have improved bodies so allow users to customize them further.
More head shapes, eyes, noses, mouths, hair, eyebrows, hats, beards, facial features such as freckles, etc with the ability to fully customise them with any colour.
The ability to customize the Mii outfits. Nothing too complex, just a selection of leg styles (i.e pants, jeans, skirt etc), footwear, t-shirts and jackets to provide further variety and the option to choose the basic colours to capture your taste.
Special event Mii game accessories. For example, with the launch of a new Mario Game the ability to purchase a Mario or Luigi themed Mii suit.
A more enjoyable Mii Plaza similar to Playstation Home. Allowing you to wander around the Wii Fit island and village with themed buildings to enter that connect to the Wii Channels. For example an Internet café building that you could enter and wander around inside before sitting down at a PC and loading up the Internet Channel or Shopping Channel. A Clothes store allowing you to purchase various Mii special themed clothes using Wii points. How about a Konami t-shirt, Sega jacket etc?
The option to play MP3’s in the Mii channel to watch your Mii’s dance ☺

Wii GAMES
Luigi's mansion 2 with Mii Support
Pilot Wings
Wii Punch Out with Mii Support
Wii Chrono Trigger
Wii F-Zero with Mii Support

I think it's a tad too early for a new Zelda, and they need to allow Fox Mccloud (Starfox) to return to form.

It's times like this when I almost feel the Ninty love I used to have. Gimme some quality games Nintendo and I may just hold off buying that PS3 next week. I miss the big N but just find enjoying their games hard work rather than easily slipping into them, heck, I got bored of Mario Galaxy! Ashamed of myself but it was just too easy...
