SCEE president David Reeves has spoke of Sony's belief that PS3 will eventually outstrip total lifetime sales of the phenomenally successful PS2.
PS3 may have got off to a slow start but Reeves says: "The PS3 install base is growing faster that the PS2's was at this point in its lifecycle."
He added: "The next five years are going to be turbulent. But I think it is going to be the most exciting period that we have ever seen in the past ten years of video games," he added.
Sony's hopes come despite Wii's general dominance in the hardware market. But Reeves speaks positively of competition. "We welcome all competition. Whatever happens, we are all going to do well. We should celebrate the growth of the industry," said Reeves at a recent conference, according to industry mag MCV.

I think with the Wii taking off Sony will have trouble getting past the 100 million mark. Though saying that the Wii is pretty cheap and the Playstation is still well known, it is possible. Though i can't see it happening. It will be successful no doubt, tohugh i have reservations about this. It would be amazing if it did though. dam there's so much love in here.... I think the video games industry could benefit from a bit more of a supportive, constructive approach. The multi format nature of the industry is the main factor for the terrible fanboyism we see on various websites. Everyone wants to flame everyone. I have a dream.. I have a dream that one day little white controllers will be able to play with big black consoles... I can see a single format taking over in the future.. Imagine how much easier it would be for developers to create great games without having to spend time creating multi format games... but until then, these kinds of constructive if not complimentary comments will all help create a more rounded industry. The ps3 is ahead of ps2 sales at the same point and still costs a lot more than the ps2 did at the same point. I wouldn't rule it out beating the ps2.
The wii has sold so quickly but hasn't really effected the ps3 sales.
All 3 companies are ahead of where they were in terms of numbers sold compared to the last generation.
One thing that is clear is that the industry is expanding and what people look for in games and consoles varies more than ever before.
The reason why they're all up is that the market is growing all the time, gaming is more mainsteam now then it used to be, but I disagree about the PS3 beating the PS2 for the following reasons. 1) The PS2 had no real competition (the Xbox came out too late to compete with it). 2)Pirate games were easier to get hold of (more people are willing to pay a lot for a console when they can get games for Ł5) not that I agree with it! 3) The PS2 was cheaper on release even if you go by inflation and its rediculously cheap now.
I think that the PS3 will do very well, but I don't think that it will beat the PS2's hardware numbers. One of the biggest reasons for so many PS2's being sold was the fact that it was quite cheap and, sadly, easy to mod and get pirate software for.

As for the ps3 selling faster than the ps2, that does make sense, the ps2 was a massive console, the ps3 has so far survived purely on the ps2 reputation, that got it sales. The ps2 didnt have that massive brand backing behind it that the ps3 has now.
While it's great to think about how it all might pan out, no-one can predict the future. Sega might release the Dreamcast2 tomorrow and everyone might buy it and forget about all the other consoles
At the risk of sounding contraversial at this love in, I just want to say that its about time we got a bit more of a sensible, humble comment from Sony.
I think they have treated their customers with contempt for quite a while, going on the notion that the customers dont really matter and that the 'Playstation brand will sell' philosophy.
Its good that they've been knocked off their pedastal and back down to earth. Now we may see some more innovations and an improved online service.
So they're just going to coast along on the success of the PS1/PS2, and hope that everyone who bought one or both of those consoles will eventually buy a PS3 too? I'm sure at one point or another in the past Atari, Sega and Commodore all had the same thought, and look what happened to them.

PS1 and PS2 benefitted ***hugely*** from the ease of piracy of the games and modding of the console - if anyone disagrees with this I would like to here their counter-arguments. I'm prepared to argue the toss my end.
Conversely, due to BluRay, PS3 is the least piratable console of the current generation. But I'm going to disregard that. I've seen through friends and family that they are prepared to fork out for a PS3 mainly because of the BluRay drive and it's ability to play HD content. More and more people are buying HDTV's because that is what is advertised in the stores. What is powering the HDTV display? either a Sky HD boxor a PS3 that offers affordable HD content. Beause people are a lot more switched on nowadays the PS3 is looking like an attractive proposition to put underneath the TV.
A lot of people are upgrading there TV's now. I certainly would not consider a SDTV when a HDTV is only 50-100 pounds more expensive if you look in the right place - and more so when bigger screens (which are HDTV enabled) are becoming the norm. Like it or not the TV that people buy are mostly decided by the man of the house who wants to prove he has a bigger dick than his mates - that means the latest tech - hence the HDTV.

The thing is, if they do end up selling more ps3's than they do ps2's, they arn't really going to care what the wii is/are selling. I paid Ł300 quid for a ps2 and i also paid Ł300 for a ps3. Bit of a "bs" statement to be fair.

You do know that before the PS2, they made the first Playstation? It didn't just pop out of the bottom-end of nowhere. I doubt anyone with at least half a brain is going to 'impulse buy' a PS3 just because they "quite liked the first two".
