New Max Payne movie shots emerge

Adding to our slight inkling that it could be good
Three new pictures from the new Max Payne movie have emerged online, revealing a NYPD squad vehicle, a darkened car and a whole lot of snow.

Considering that the movie is being directed by a chap most famous for remaking The Omen, it's looks both authentic to the game and quite atmospheric.

The NYPD squad vehicle also hints of some riveting action sequences. We expected as much, but there was the possibility it would have focused more on the detective story than the gratuitous violence. Apparently, not so.

Max Payne: The Movie is scheduled for release on October 17. Maybe we're being stupid, but we're cautiously optimistic.

I refuse to believe it. There has never yet been a decent game > movie transition so I'm not holding my breath.

That said, it would be great if Max Payne was the one to change all that.
Dajmin on 20 Jun '08
Hmmmm. 2 things.

1) I hope they concentrate on the film noir styling and the dialogue, not bullet time. But, since MP is mostly known for BT, I assume this will be a crappy action film. But! But! It could be a film noir, with dialogue et al! But.... It'll probably be an action film.

2)What *is* AIG? Is it a bank? Insurance company?

Insurance, yes.

Insurance, yes.

Thanks. It was one of those things that you think "Ooo, what is it?" But then decide that sooner or later you will find out, therefore you do not bother with wikipedia...

I thought Hitman was good as well as Resident Evil

I quite enjoyed Res Evil too. Well, I enjoyed the laser cutting scenes most, but the rest of the film wasn't the worst I've seen.

No, that honour goes to 'I Know Who Killed Me'.

Having played all the Hitman games I thought the film was good.

Not seen hitman yet, but it doesn't look like it's captured the atmosphere of the games at all from the trailers.

Max Payne could make a good film, but I would have preferred it was done in Sin City style.
funkyjack on 20 Jun '08
The guy in ugly Betty and Resident Evil (the movie, 1 (the fake police man/cop)) should be Max Payne, he looks virtually exactly like him.
Waldino on 20 Jun '08
I'm not so sure tbh. Max payne might have been quite awesome if it was a mix of action/dectective work. But will the movie capture the feel and plot of the game properly? Or will hollywood butcher another awesome games potential for a movie.
johnway on 20 Jun '08
I'm not sure how well it'll work.

Max Payne was a really good game based on a movie style. Making a movie of a game of a movie style may not be a great move. I think it'll lose a lot of it's charm.

Exactly what I have said every time a story about this film has cropped up, whilst everyone else seems optimistic.

But! But! It was a p**s take (or perhaps more accurately a homage.) It was an exaggeration of the film noir style. Dialogue was emulating the style to an extreme that it became funny (intentionally so.) One of my favourite lines in any game comes from MP2 (paraphrasing) "The choices laid before me like a pruned bonsai tree," (and a special mention to "well that was fun, in a f**ked up not at all fun kind of way."Wink I can only see a film taking the source material seriously, which is the wrong direction to take.

As Dajmin suggests, this film will just end up like every other action film, with the stigma of it being based on a game meaning it probably won't even be a good one.

I swear those screenshots make it look like the first game.
the wrecked police car? surely thats when the Aiser(or whatever) building is falling apart at the end.

but the one with the car, you can see in the car alittle bit, maybe they're just testing, but theres two people in that car!! could be Mona?? but she wasnt in the first one to a degree that she done anything 'with' Max.

but yeh, I hope they dont f**k this one up, like hitman, OMG! worst crap I've seen like ever and I've seen 100episodes of MST3K, so thats saying something!!

just hope they choose good actors.
isopression on 20 Jun '08
Not sure how on earth anyone can get excited about a couple of pictures of cars. Let's face it; Max Payne was shallow, noir-homage s**te to begin with, and I think we all know the smart money will be on this turning out a complete flop.

When will people learn to snort in derision at the notion of movies based on games? The problem is that game narratives themselves (a few notable exceptions aside) have yet to evolve from being amatuer rip-offs of p**s poor Hollywood tripe. So why would you want to make a movie of something which is in itself a poor attempt at apeing terrible movies?

The thought of Gore Verbinski directing a BioShock movie fills me with terror. And before anyone retorts, yes it was an awesome game with an interesting concept and great production design, but it certainly did not have a great narrative. Two hours of some B-list actor shooting lightning bolts at monsters in deep-sea diving suits, directed by a complete hack? Can't wait for that one...

...

Once again, thank you for allowing me to blow off steam after bad day at work.
Saigy on 20 Jun '08
I'll probably boycott this film after FUX's trantrum over an indie company creating a max payne short film and shut it down!! Evil or Very MadEvil or Very MadEvil or Very Mad

Everyone should boycott this film to tell FUX that they've got their head so far up their bottom, they can see their own face. Laughing

Note to Hollywood:

Do Not Botch This.

MP had a nice noire story & style, please no cheap thrills and gratification for action fans...anticipates....

Sorry, still have to retort to this. Bioshock is one of the few games I can think of that would work wonderfully as a film. There was so much going on in the game that a film with a lot of depth could be made. I agree that they shouldn't use the main plot of the game (which although good and far better than most games, it was intrinsically about games, most notably our power of choice in games.) I think they should do a prequel.

But as you say, with Gore Verbinski at the helm it will either be a "fun" film (Pirates 1) or tripe (Pirates 2 and 3) and then likely to only accelerate this craze of making bad remakes of games (The Ring.)
vandelay on 21 Jun '08
I get the feeling that they will focus more on the action instead of the story. So it will most likely be crap, unless they use the story properly.

I was thinking that the car might be Vlad's, but I can't see the damn license plate.
Wakacha on 21 Jun '08
sod the film, what about a new game?

take that from max and, seriously, what is left?
I dont want to watch max walk around a subway, shipping depot, parking lot and skyscraper collecting clues about a drug ring.

NOOOOO before vader.

The Matrix came out almost a whole year before Max Payne, and although the game had been in development for a long time before release, so had The Matrix.

So it's pretty difficult to determine which 'came up' with it first!

I hear that, Just assume that everyone knows about the Mona surviving ending and you could "Max payne : The settling down and starting a family (again) of max payne"
