Microsoft has brushed off rumours of Xbox 360 receiving another price drop this autumn as "rumour and speculation."
We've heard it a few times already but the next issue of EGM reports that MS will announce a price drop on 360 hardware this autumn. When exactly, isn't pinpointed.
The reports don't give any further details on how significant the drop might be, or to which SKUs, but they do say that Sony is also expected to follow with a cut of its own for PS3. It seems they could both after that magical price point of Wii.
As well as MS, who's keeping totally quiet on the matter, we pestered retailers who knew nothing of it and, in general, thought it highly unlikely considering the prices were only cut in March.
Sony was also unavailable for comment on the PS3 cut.
Update: As has been quite rightly pointed out in the comments, the US Xbox 360 has yet to receive a price cut like Europe. So maybe this could just be for North America?
PS3 could have a nice price-drop in Q3 to Q4 i imagine. Maybe. It would get a few more people in, around about the time of a few exclusives (before and after Christmas).
The Wii, obviously won't need a price drop, and the 360 is quite cheap anyway. It could happen, price drops increase sales etc. no doubt but Microsoft have less need of one than Sony maybe.
Umm...whomever posted the article didn't obviously take into consideration what geographic area EGM services and the fact that North America, unlike everywhere else, has not received a price drop.
A price drop is long overdue for the 360 in the U.S. I believe Canada already got a price drop, but since the U.S. dollar sucks harder than any Eurotrash whore ever could at this point, anything the U.S. gets Canada will likely get as well.
What's also sad is that I haven't seen anything about the rumors from the same EGM that indicate that Microsoft may be licensing out it's hardware for the 360 to other companies (like what the 3D0 did) for sale in their products.
Yup - some pretty good deals out there for 360's these days (the Halo one is a brilliant price at Zavvi).
I doubt we'll see a price cut from Microsoft unless Sony goes first - the 360 is already at a ridiculously low price and the PS3 could stand a little reduction sometime soon....having said that, it's still a decent price if only for the Blu-Ray capabilities.
The Wii won't drop in price anytime soon. I have a friend who's looking to pick one up over the next couple of weeks and he'd asked me where he could get the best deal - I had to tell him that £180 is pretty much it for a brand new one.
ummmmm i dont think a price drop will change a thing for the 360!
360 sales are dropping and they are being outsold by the WII and the PS3 in Europe and Japan so really dont see what a further price drop will change.
If sony drop the PS3 price later this year which i am sure they will MS are in real trouble considering their console is only 2 yrs old.
The 360 was released in November 2005 which means its been out 2.5 years.
Its also sold 19 million units which I think it may of surpassed the original xbox console.
If MS are now selling 360's at a profit and are also believed to have a newer sku reducing the costs further a price cut can take it into PS2 territory never mind wii territory.
MS have the highest attach rate for the three consoles and make $40 for each user who regulary uses Xbox live.
If Sony do drop the PS3 price down to that of the Wii then I'd seriously consider picking one up. Mainly as a blu-ray player to be honest but also for some of the exclusives, especially LBP. Good news for games fans everywhere.

Actually the 360 is a few months short of it's thrid birthday in both the uk and europe and the US and japan, yes it is being outsold in japan (hardly suprising since they have dislike to anything western really) and in continal europe, its still outselling it in the uk and in the biggest market in the world the US, so it's still on top overall, it does need a price drop just before xmas, it needs to become lower the Wii for the better sku's, the arcade could be dropped to just under 100 quid, the pro to 150 and the elite to 200, then sales would go into overtime in the west, they still wouldnt be able to give it away in japan though, even if it had it own final fantasy and dragon quest games on it.
