CVG has managed to get its grubby hands on the final list of features for the hotly anticipated Firmware 2.4 update, which was yesterday rumoured to be due early next week. But that's not the case we've been told...
Update: Since our original story went live, we've received further information regarding the inclusion of trophies in the 2.4 update. As expected full 2D trophy support will be in the XMB update and there will be four types: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
Platinum is only awarded when you have collected all other trophies in a game. Also there are no gamer points, it's all done via a levelling up system. Think Call of Duty 4 levelling up system, we reckon. Update Out
Speaking under strict conditions of anonymity, a source has told CVG that Firmware 2.4 is expected to launch in around three weeks' time. A quick look at the diary reveals that E3 is just under three weeks away. It doesn't take a genius to see that Sony's pre-E3 conference would be the perfect time to launch the Sony XMB assault.
Announcing something and making it available at the same time is the way forward, as Microsoft proved by revealing Doom isn't just coming to Xbox Live Arcade, it's on Xbox Live Arcade a few E3s ago. Apple is known for this approach too.
We've also scooped the following list of XMB features that you'll be able to access in-game. Here goes:
Friend category
View, send, receive messages
Manage downloads
Set the vibration feature of the controller
Sign in to PlayStation Network
Register friends
Manage Bluetooth devices
Terminate the game
Music category
Use the system BGM
Work the system BGM operation panel
Settings category
Assign controllers

As previously reported the update will also allow you to play back your own tunes in-game from the XMB Music column. It's unclear whether this feature will be compatible with all games or just new titles created with more recent development tools.
The system BGM will offer functions such as Play, Stop, Previous track, Next track, Change repeat mode, Change shuffle mode, Change volume (five levels). When you stop the playback of your tunes, playback of the game music will then begin.
Sony has yet to confirm or deny any of this and won't comment on rumour and speculation. If you ask us though, this is bang on the money. Not long to wait and see...

Well considering not all 8 million will actually buy and considering free online is a selling point for them i would say common sense reigns over your math skills.

Achievments

Online.

If those people wanted to stop paying they could either a) ditch XBL & then potentialy b) buy a PSN for 300 notes, or whatever, and get PSN for free (at the moment i'd stress). b) would set them back what 7 1/2 years sub fee so that doesn't make monetary sense does it & if the just did a) they'd just be denying themselves a service they've obviously been using to their own detriment. How can COD4 and GTA IV be "more worthwhile" than the PS3's selection of online games, when the PS3's online games include both these games?

If that money were used to provide free downloadable content (extra levels and the like) for the popular games, then it would certainly be justified. But that's not the case; additional content generally requires you to pay even more for it.

If that's a top priority for you, then the PC is a far superior solution than any of the consoles. Even if you can't afford a decent system, there are numerous popular online PC games that will run on low spec systems; for instance, Doom 2 is still insanely popular, and you could get a system capable of running it at a decent speed for less than the price of a Wii!

That must have been in the days when only 1 type of computer/console existed. I sure don't remember those days though, but people were arguing about their consoles/pc/commodore/whatever ever since there were at least 2 brands.
I've recently made the switch to PS3 and I have to admit that, for me, the online games I have been involved in have been great with very little lag. The only game I did have a problem with was the demo of BF: BC, that was easily fixed though.
Friends are easily located if they have the game. Sure it's done a little differently to M$ but you get used to it.
From my experience, I paid the subscription to M$ so I could play online (Thats the only reason I had it). You get demos earlier than that of silver members but they eventually get them. Also, you have to pay for gamerpics, themes, XBLA titles and also for films, so thats more money.
Yes, Sony are playing catch-up but to dismiss it would be silly. As for the cheap Blu Ray player comment. I'm certainly glad that I didn't spend Ł120 at the time for the HD-DVD add on that M$ knocked out which is now available at Gamestation for Ł29.99!

There's a good point made there in regards to the quality of both services.
There is a lot of xbox users who don't begrudge paying for the service supplied, but how many ps3 users would say the same, i certainly would not.
While no one wants to pay, we don't mind so much if the service is worth it, and even with this latest update i don't think sony's is.
Also the point made about the lack of headset use also imho devalues the online experience on ps3, which is another reason i plump for the xbox when i purchase multi format games,.....well, and the achievements....oh and the better pad.....and the.. i'll quit while im ahead.

as a ps3 owner and a vaguely intelligent person; i cannot see psn staying free forever. this is also something that Sony have hinted at in the past, and you will have to be living in a world lolly pops and butterflies if you think Sony would not cash in on it.
Once XMB and trophies is up and running, bug free and plenty of people are using it, we can expect a competitive rate for it.

I very highly doubt that Sony will charge for using the PSN like MS. Fanboys and hardcore gamers aside, there's a much bigger market of more casual fans like my brother in law who owns a PS3 and asks me about future games etc and has no clue and if Sony suddently cut him off from playing COD4 online and asked to charge him he'd go mental as would a large amount of the population. How is that going to help Sony's rep? You can't just make something free then take it away it would be unfair to the casual consumer and certainly cause a huge number of complaints that the company really don't need. I myself bought a PS3 because I'd rather have free online gaming than pay a subscription fee and big whoop dee doo if theres more people on voice chat on XBL, I don't want to talk to a bunch of screaming titmunchers anyway who just shout abuse.
XBL has alot more worthwhile games to play online.

How can COD4 and GTA IV be "more worthwhile" than the PS3's selection of online games, when the PS3's online games include both these games?

If that money were used to provide free downloadable content (extra levels and the like) for the popular games, then it would certainly be justified. But that's not the case; additional content generally requires you to pay even more for it.

If that's a top priority for you, then the PC is a far superior solution than any of the consoles. Even if you can't afford a decent system, there are numerous popular online PC games that will run on low spec systems; for instance, Doom 2 is still insanely popular, and you could get a system capable of running it at a decent speed for less than the price of a Wii!
COD 4 and GTA IV are better on the 360 coz of achievments, more people are on the 360, more people actually talk on the 360.
Plus i have alot more friends on the 360.
Yes you can play Gears on PC for free but then you cant get Achievments and you cant play ranked.
If gears 2 is on the PC then i will buy it on the PC aswell as the 360...

I hope PLaystation dont start charging for thier on line access but I can see it in the pipe line.
I dont think I would pay a fee, the machine costs enough and so do the games. Even if it adds up to a small Ł3.99 a month sodd that, these companys should give something back to thier customers.
Without our hard earned cash being pumped in there would be no PS or XBOX, it would be a good gesture of them to keep on line for free. I almost know that once its established a fee will emerge and once again PS3 owners will feel that rear penetration.

honestly how have i critized Sony? I think you've seriously mis-understood what i've said. I'm neither criticzing Sony for offering a free online service or MS for offering a charged service but simply suggested that potentially rather than XBL becoming free PSN may become charged... and even then i only did so in response to some comment about MS justifying the charge.

PSusers don't use headsets and are known as mainstream individualistic gamers. Even if they use you hear s**t on most of the games. This is a fact.
If you want the real deal you have to pay a little for it. Xbox started with Live as an intergrated part of teir system. The community has grown beyond competition.

Does seem like a good update, like i said before it seems to have got people on PS sites wetting their pants and yeah it is what live already has. Get over it. It makes me laugh that people get so defensive over something so trivial. PSN does have alot to catching up to do to be up to Xbox lives standards, get over yourself.
I dont think i'd pay for the service if they do start charging, just as i refused to pay for Live. I know they have to make (more money) but i dont think we should buy the games and shell out more to play them online

Fair enough, this is Sony's first real attempt at an online network but that's no excuse for waiting over a year for what I'd class as basic features to be added. Jesus! You prepubescent boys and your silly bickering. I had to trawl through 5 pages to see just a couple of good points.
Of course the xbox has the advantage at the moment.....it's been around longer than the PS3. On the PS2, it took a year or so before the games started getting good. The same thing will happen with PS3. Same with the online side. It will take a while, but the PS3 will catch up and eventually offer a service as good as or better than microsoft. And, of course, the PS3 is a more powerful machine. When the programmers get the hang of it, it will outclass the xbox.... I guess thats why the xbox fanboys are screaming so loud.
Personally I think that when sony's service equals microsofts they will keep it free for a year or so to encourage people that are undecided which console to buy to opt for PS3, then start charging. Obviously it wont be free for ever....there's too much cash to be made.
Hopefully you will still be able to play online without having to pay the extra, though obviously without all the extra frills. I really dont care about trophies, friend systems or online chat. I have enough friends IRL and going by the drivel in some of these forums I could care less about being able to hear some 12 year old that thinks he's the dog's whatsits being able to call me a tosser because he beat me in a computer game. All I want is to be able to pick up a game, jump online for a couple of hours and have some fun so it's highly unlikely I'm going to pay Ł40 a year for a few extra features.
I think we should be more worried about DLC. It's bad enough paying Ł40 for a game without having to pay an extra Ł20+ for an extra character, new weapon or whatever.

How can MS justify a charge? They can't simply, especially when you start seeing MMOG with added chargable monthly fees.

They've spend a s**t load of cash catching up with XBL so I imagine they may want to soon re-coup some of that cost. I'll let you do the math: as of 16th May PSN had 8 million registered users so with each paying Ł40 a year that makes??? That's right a bucket load of cash that Sony would like to have.
Look, if you've owned a 360 from the start, you have incurred a Ł120 XBL fee to date. So in effect, the 360 costs another Ł40 for every year you own it.
PS3 of course the service is free. So the price of the console stays at what you paid for it.
Remember, XBL is a vital component of the 360 console and the PS3 console. So charging for it makes the 360 cost Ł420 sheets if you've had the cursed thing from the start.
Not to mention the emotional cost of having to wait for the Xbox engineers to fix it and send the 200lb monstrosity back to your fooking house.
Sometimes up to 5 times.

You can't add the subscription to the total price, its like saying Sky+ costs Ł772 for the box (Ł100 for the box plus Ł56 x 12 for the top package). PSN even with all these added features really can't compare with XBL, plus theres games on PSN that have 2 versions online and offline and you have to pay seperately for both, this is how they charge. Even though its free its not worth even using! Like I said I have both and rarely use PSN whereas me and my mates use XBL are lot more. Ever heard the saying, you get for what you pay for? I own a 360 and a Wii, there I said it. I'm not ashamed or gonna start bitching about another console. I don't like ps3's then I didn't like the ps1 or ps2. Also not gonna slag people off for choosing them. It's a choice, choice is good. Choice forces things to evolve and get better, faster cheaper. Xbox live has been 40 quid for a good while now. Hopefully sony emulating live will make MS make it better and then everyone wins.
Competition good makes companies strive for better products. Take NVIDIA and ATI/AMD, NVIDIA haven’t really done anything in the last few years because ATI haven’t challenged them. Do we really want that in our game consoles?

I don't mind if they do charge. If they want to compete thoug it'd have to be around the Ł20 mark. That's still 20x more than free and it's more competition against Live.

no, thats a stupid question. why do you need to justify a free service, and anyway i dont think sony will bring in a charge because i know for a fact if they bring in a charge i wont pay for it, and probably most of the onine users who arent 7 miles up sonys bumhole wont use it either
the latest firmware update has been pulled,version 2.40 which took me hours to install is no longer available due to problems suffered by some users, ive encountered problems too with GTA IV online ,after months of phonecalls to bt over issues with bt home hub and two routers later i got my dreams into reality (GTA on line)only for firmware to go an f**ck thing up.Have i piosned my PS3? whats the next step ? how must x boxers be laughing now
