Key Force Unleashed devs laid off

Star Wars staffers cut down like younglings
In a move that would even make Emperor Palpatine blush with embarrassment, LucasArts has laid off key members of The Force Unleashed team just as they finished the games off, says a report.

According to one of the staffers who spoke to Joystiq, the personnel were long-time staff members who have worked on a number of key titles including X-Wing, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango.

The current internal team is now said to be insufficient for handling a sequel to The Force Unleashed, should it prove successful.

LucasArts is also developing a new Indiana Jones game internally. It's unclear whether this team has been affected. Whilst Lucas rep Margaret Grohne reiterated that the company was committed to its internal studio just two weeks ago, all evidence suggests otherwise.

So we're pretty much guaranteed that if "The Force Unleashed" is a smash hit, its sequel is going to be garbage? Smart move Lucas, really smart...
Atleast have the decency to wait for the game to be out so you're sure its a hit or not before you start laying off developers.

It used to be the case that (way back when) when they release a game, you could more or less be certain that it was going to be good. DOTD, MI, MI2, IJFOA, XWING, XWING VS TIE righer. where did they go wrong?

I could be wrong but i'm sure i read somewhere that LucasArts where ceasing development of games anyway.
Think their planning on pretty much just selling the rights to their IP & that's it.

Scummy gits!

Firstly the devs have clearly shown loyalty to Lucasarts over 10 years+ so surely they should be the last to go should there be a need for job cuts.

And secondly, should the game prove successful, judging from current opinions it will, then Lucas arts will make money, and the devs will recieve royalties for their hard work. Lucasarts have stopped those key members who helped make the game from reaping the bonuses they should rightly recieve.

Seems that LucasArts have gone over to the dark side.... they can only redeem themselves by bringing out a monkey island and grim fandago sequel imo

George Lucas needs to personally take back control of the company because it's being corroded and corrupted by ex-EA parasites & other scum that he's entrusted its operations to.

GET THEM OUT! Mad

Maybe they'll bitterly club together and start a new independant games studio that releases quality titles. Smile

i'm not, the people that made those games back in the day all left so the chances are it would suck.
pishers on 27 Jun '08
so they sacked the employees that took part in creating some of the best games of all time??

WHY?!?!! Evil or Very Mad

i agree with a previous post that they should start up their own company, and make some decent games without interferance from ex-EA suits

Is everyone here on crack?

For years now (after most of the original Monkey Island guys left particularly), all the internal teams at LucasArts have been treading water.

The only decent games that have come out recently (in the last few years anyway) were all done by external development houses, such as Bioware who did KOTOR. LucasArts should have farmed out all their development years ago!

If I'm wrong, please could someone enlighten me and name one good game that LucasArts have developed internally within the last few years.

anyone interested in buying the game better make sure it doesnt have a load of bugs on release

I wonder if they maybe fired them too late....

Imagine going into the Tie Fighter factory in the game, using your force push on a couple of stormtroopers and sending them flying into a far wall - as they fly off into the scenery, one of them can clearly be heard to say:

'George Lucas is a t*****'

Condolences to the affected staff, and best of luck to them in their search for the next gig. Turn 10 Studios (makers of Forza Motorsport) would love to speak with them; link below.

Star Wars Republic commando on the xbox was a good game. And it was developed internally.

Agreed - either that or get snapped up by some other, small, studio.

I'd love to see a game this generation in the same vein as Grim Fandango.
