According to a forum post on N4G quoting a Sony London insider, the PlayStation Store is set to get PS2 games added to its roster of downloadable games this summer.
The post suggests that the move will be announced during Sony's E3 conference but won't actually be made live until later on this summer. It's also being rumoured that Europe will get this function first.
Sony won't comment on the rumour, or the resulting speculation, but you can see that the pic includes tiles such as Metal Gear Solid 2, Red faction, MGS2, Fantavision, Smuggler's Run and SSX.
Even if it turns out to be nothing but a dirty rumour and a photoshopped picture, it's one of the better ones we've heard. Please let this be on the money, we can't find MGS2 in the shops anywhere!
why bother while ps2 games can be bought in a shop,in a box with a manual for way cheaper than £13.PSone games are fine becuase you cant really buy them in main shops, game, argos etc, anymore. I wont download PS2 games and i get the feeling other people wont as well.

Hmm it will mean Sony will have to update the firmware to include a fully functioning software based PS2 emulator as the 40GB has no PS2 support at all, and what happens to the 60GB models that already have PS2 support be it half hardware and half software will it go fully software, i'm hoping things dont get messed up, i have some PS2 games that i still play and work prfectly fine on my 60GB at present.
I cant afford wasting precious HDD space with ps2 dvd sized games. 40GB blows
What?
320gb HDD is about £50. Upgrade your HDD.
How? I'm new to this PS3 thing y'see.
Exactly and what about when you wanna transfer your old data over to the 320GB HDD? I checked into this thinking it was a piece of p**s and was told its a lot harder then people think and a lot of f**king about.
13 quid fo PS2 games feck off just re-instate backwards compatibility onto the 40 gig PS3's and be done with it. At the moment I have to setup my PS2 to play old games (and they cost a lot less than 13 quid(anyone know if thers going to be issues with transferring downloaded games onto a new Hard Disk?). I know Sony have lost a few billion with the PS3 but this is not going to get it back surely.

I'm pretty sure that'll all be sorted in the download itself, i'm pretty sure they wont even need to do a firmware update.
y'know, I'd be happy with them just releasing some decent PS1 games on the PSN. Since the feature was announced I've yet to be interested in any of the meagre offerings that we've seen in the EU, though the story may be different for US and Japan, I'll admit.
So, come on Sony. Give us these new features, sure, but lets at least fill them with some real content.

It is dead straight forward. However to do the back-up you need to have a third storage device larger enough to store the files you want to transfer, a USB HDD is ideal.
Plug the USB HDD into one of the USB sockets and hit the Back-up options from the System menu on the XMB. Then switch off the machine and remove the old HDD. Remove the caddy from the drive and attach to the new drive. Switch the system back on and let it format and install the new drive. Then restore your old files from the back-up drive. Job done.
Have a look at this movie clip - there are plenty of other versions online if that doesnt help. If you don't have an ipod or external usb, a digital camera would probably work to back up your data too.

Same idea - but this video is only 2 minutes long and is much more to the point...

I don't think they will have to release a full back compat program, as the 360's one doesn't. It is an individual emulator for each game engine rather than a full blown virtual recreation of the chipset.
This looks like it explains why they remved full hardware emulation from the European consoles.... so they can screw us over to play games we've already bought once.
Seeing that I turned my 40GB into a 150GB for £40, I have no idea why people complain about large downloads.
Er, because thats an extra cost on top of the already pricey system itself?
The problem isn't the download size IMO, its the install size of various games as well as this. A single, DVD-based PS2 game won't be more than 3-4GB if that; couple that with many games including 4GB installs and by the time you've installed a handful of PS3 games and downloaded a couple of PS2 titles you're out of room on your 40gig model.
That said, you don't need to keep the damn things on there, though.
My 360 is only a 20GB model, but I've bought a couple of Xbox Originals on it and don't have problems keeping enough disc space around. Its just a case of good housekeeping.
If this is true sony have some serious ass kissin' to do...
Removing the 40/20gb PS3 Back Compat in favor of "Cheaper" console...
They said they had removed the hardware used to "Emulate" the PS2 hardware. When asked if they could do it via software they then said "It would be highly costly, inefficient and timely"...
So either they never required the hardware or someone is going to waste a hell of a lot of time to implement software in each release that emulates the ps2's core...
In WHICH case why the HELL don't they put backcompat software in the next update so we can play ps2 games on the ps3 WITHOUT the hardware?
Sony...The worlds new Microsoft... (aka: full of shash, lies and anythin for an extra buck or two)
EDIT*** I have just decided that the PS3 update for XMB is too little to late and I'm taking steps to SELL the PS3...No games, bad online lack of features and I'm not spending 15 to 25 quid on a bluray film lol...
Bye bye sony...Curse of the 3rd console hits again...or just poor judgement on Sonys half.
And so the REAL reason rears its ugly head as to why Sony removed backwards compatibility................................Now they can charge for the games again. Sony and Microsoft are as greedy as each other and don't give two hoots about the loyal customer.

Plug in any Fat32 formatted usb HDD and use the backup facility, change the internal HDD and use the restore facility. Couldnt be simpler

What he said.
Does this mean that if there was way to play PS2 "backups" off the PS3 hard drive without purchasing the download, I could do so legally as I own the original PS2 games?
While it's a nice idea for those people who are new to a Sony game console, I'm not paying twice for software I already own. Looks like the PS2 will stay under the TV for a while.

I was just thinking the same thing.
I would imagine that a hell of a lot of PS3 owners will also own a PS2.
Unless they are clinically insane, they won't be buying games they can play on their PS2, just to play it on their PS3...
hohum, even if true. PS2 games are still kinda easy to find in stores and on ebay in disc format. about the only ones i'm having trouble finding are Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and ICO. otherwise i already have pretty much every PS2 game i want.
what Sony needs to do is release more PS1 classics on the PS Store, at least in the US. PS3 has been out for 1.5 years now, yet the PS Store only has about 1% of PS1's back catalog of games. there are so many classic PS1 games i'd love to get my hands on (i refuse to pay the exorbitant prices people ask for on ebay for PS1 games), but its like Sony's too busy playing stick-in-the-mud or something.
to this day it amazes me that the 360 has so many more classic games than the PS3, considering Microsoft (who has only made two systems in the past seven years) doesn't have nearly as impressive a back catalog of games as Sony (who has made four systems--two of which with 2000+ game libraries--in thirteen).

yep. they're both shady. which is why i never understood why fanboys cling to one or the other. well, that, and the fact tha being a fanboy just robs you of enjoying games on all systems. this doesn't effect me either way though (i have a 60gb launch PS3, complete with full BC), but i can certainly understand your angst.

1% are you kidding? Theres thousands of ps1 games and only about 30 on the PSstore.
I've just read some of the posts and it never surprises me how mental people are. Waffling on about how Sony ruined their lives. I mean, yes they will try and hook people for as much money as possible, and which business would'nt. But at the end of the day, they are not holding a gun against our heads to buy stuff. I could be just as p**sed with every company on gods earth. Do you think Coca Cola released the diet drink for the benefit of mankind?
Are they patching each individual game available for download to avoid the lack of BC, or was the lack of Emotion chip for PS2 compatibility just a lie to help shift the stock mountain of 60GB units prior to the price drop?

Wake up people.
But even you cant say that promising full BC, then removing it for no other reason except to exploit gamers later down the line with pricey downloadable versions is a joke.

I could still play PS2 games if the need arised on my 60gb PS3. Alternatively, I could also just buy a PS2 if I was so interested in older games. I could even wait for Sony to let me download them for £12.99. Or I could just not buy any at all. The point being, I have a choice. Same as MS give you the choice regarding their BC games and film downloads.

Jesus christ you scream xbox fanboy if ever there was one!! Selling your PS3 because your finally getting XMB and the choice to possibly download a PS2 game?? And no games for PS3? Clearly you havent played uncharted, rachet,Cod4, MGS4 the list goes on! I actually agree with what Mark said earlier, Sony,MS and every other major company in the world will try and shaft you for your hard earned cash so the sooner most people accept it the better.

No, his point being, was that sony promised full BC then removed it, and are now asking us to pay for it. I think people have a right to feel agrieved.
