Sony has denied that it plans to offer PlayStation 2 titles as digital titles via the PlayStation Store.
As we reported yesterday, a forum post on N4G allegedly quoted a Sony London insider saying that the store would get PS2 games this summer. They posted a nice screen, too.
According to Sony's Patrick Seybold though, this is not happening. "I'm not sure where the image came from," he said to GamePro. "At this point, we haven't made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3."
Pretty decisive words. The source did claim that Sony would reveal the service at E3 this year though, so there's still a possibility Sony is just staying tight-lipped until the big reveal.
Am I missing something but I thought the PS3 wasn't backwards compatible with PS2 games anymore. If this is so then how was the PS3 going to play them anyway?

The 40GB skus aren't compatible but as downloads they would be, its only the PS2 chip (not the official name I know but it escapes me at the minute) thats missing from the PS3 40GB but as a download it wouldn't be needed I assume!
I dont understand why anyone would want to pay to download & clog up their HDD with old PS2 games that probably cost more than buying a second hand copy?...

Yeah, they could software emulate the game like Microsoft is doing with Xbox Originals. I guess we'll have to wait until E3 to see if this was true or not. Maybe Sony are p**sed because one of their "E3 surprises" was leaked?
Do us a favour Sony, get on with releasing more AAA titles and maybe we wouldn't have to rely on PS2 games.
More? How about any, I have a giant dust catcher which is basically a glorified karaoke machine for my wife on Singstar. I'll be buying Buzz but other than that there is nothing on PS3 that I can't find a better version of on PC or 360. MGS4 has been a real let down, GTA IV is overrated and non-exclusive, even Ratchet and Clank was just more of the same.

Gee mate - if your that down on it then sell it? Really don't understand people who buy something and do nothing but complain about it. Stick to your 360 and suck up to MS instead.

The 40GB can't play original PS2 game disc's but downloads would either be re-coded to run on PS3 or wrapped up in some kind of emulator.
The 80GB model is software emulation only - so I can't imagine it would be too difficult to offer that as an install? -> In fact I'm suprised they don't already do it!
