EA has released eight new screenshots from the many versions of FIFA 09.
The developer has also promised that each version will be specifically catered for the corresponding platform.
For example, the Wii version can either be played in the old 11 vs 11 simulation or the 'over-the-top 8 vs 8 arcade mode that apparently is more intuitive than normal FIFA.
The PS3/Xbox 360 version (sneakily combining two platforms in one) appears to have greater levels of strategy and position customisation, which sounds like it's making a step towards being a football management sim.

Meanwhile, the PC will get mouse gameplay controls and customizable widgets in the menu system that connects you to the FIFA community and real-world football information.

Despite Ronaldinho's svelte look in the 360/PS3 screenshots prior to his burgerfest, the player modeling looks superb...this could be the FIFA to push PES into the background once and for all!
Really not sure about what is going to happen between PES and FIFA this year.
I kinda got the feeling that FIFA may finally take PES's crown with 2009, but a 'Hands On' that I read earlier has me thinking otherwise - they basically felt that the updates EA were claiming to have included were either not noticeable or non-existent.
PES, on the other hand, really needs to pull something out of its' backside this year - but, the lack of any real info (..other than the fact that we will get a version this year) leads me to think that we won't see that many changes to what was a very lacklustre effort last year.
In short - I'm not sure that we'll see a definitive football game this year, just more of the same.
For me FIFA needs to stop p**sing about with the "50,000 different tactics" crap and actually make the teams feel different. In FIFA 08 there was honestly not much difference between Barcelona and Luton in terms of how they felt to play as. Sort it out!
Something that football games STILL hasn't sorted out is the fact that its always easier to beat Brazil than say, Macedonia.
FIFA and Pro Evo have always made games were rubbish teams literally put every man on the edge of their own box making it really difficult to score, while the good ones leave gaping holes in their defence so you batter them 8 - 0 everytime.
That UEFA 2008 game was pretty good though (though it still suffered from this problem), so I've got high hopes for FIFA.
I haven't played Fifa 08 that much but I'm willing to bet that PES2008 (PS2) is a far more balanced game. On the higher difficulty settings at least.
Play against Italy and it is hard to score. Play against Brazil and the COM will come at you strong.
But we all know the PS3/360 versions on PES2008 were truly shocking, and that Konami need to act now before they lose their loyal fanbase. This time I want true next-gen graphics and animations, as Fifa here looks very good in the graphical department.
I know it's a silly attitude to have but I still can't forgive FIFA for being so crap in the 90's are early 00's. Saying that, on PS3 certainly, 08 was a better game than PES 2008, although I found it really difficult to play because of the lack of pace and the alarming speed that energy levels went down when sprinting.
I'll stick with PES, but not until I've seen favourable reviews from fans of the game and not the misleading magazine reviews we had last time. 2008 was an atrocity on PS3 and Konami should be bloody ashamed of themselves for releasing it in that state. A shame because the mechanics made it the best PES since PES4 IMO; play it on a decent spec PC to see what I mean.

WTF, FIFA 2000 was the best football game ever!! no joke.
the eurogamer team only saw an old build without the new trap and goalkeeper ai systems..that video shows all!! and check out the forum for some amazing screenshots..these are old!
looks nice on current gen screenshots, but let me guess Us lucky pc owners will once more be given the last gen PS2 port again, I think the lack of people buying EA sports games on the PC is more down to fact it appears EA spend less than a day cobbling the pc version together than the fact they haven't utilized the mouse properly before, still I can look forward to the pS2 going out of production in a few years time when we might get a slightly better looking wii port instead to stress out our direct X 11 cards and Ninja PC's
The youtube video posted earlier looks good. Looks much pacier than 08. The modelling doesn't look too bad either, then again it doesn't look THAT much different from last year except for the slightly less rubbery texture. To be honest, I've always purchased the Fifa franchise ever since 96 or something. This year I did buy PES 2008 basically because I was so annoyed with the idiotic antics of Fifa 07, but I found PES to be terrible. I hated everything from the cheesy setup to the now arcadey gameplay, so I returned it and got Fifa 08. While I think this year's installment is the best it's been, it's far from perfect. The thing that needs to improve in my opinion is the AI. Most notably in the defensive and goalkeeping areas, and these players need to be reprogrammed to run TOWARD the ball. If I remember correctly there was a big thing about Fifas "decision making" capabilities in the 08 installment, the only thing I've noticed is the amount of BAD decisions the players make. I've seen less stupidity down my local swing park where drunken 12 year olds play with a soggy football on a friday night. I don't doubt I'll buy 09 when it arrives, but I'm hoping I throw my controller across my room less times. With these changes made it should be brilliant, but I say that every year...
looks like I can eat my words, for any FIFA pc gamers that might read this, IGN has more screenshots labeled specifically as PC shots and , hopefully it looks like we may be catching up to the current gens engine, Yipee! They do heavily feature Ribery though so be warned.
