Microsoft cuts 360 price in Australia

A sign of things to come?
Microsoft will drop the Australian arcade edition of the Xbox 360 by $50 to $349. That's in Australian dollars, in case you thought you missed a newsflash where the US invaded Oz.

The move now makes the Xbox 360 Arcade console the cheapest system on the Australian market. The Wii is selling at $399.

The console war is quite tight in Australia and New Zealand, according to IGN. Whilst the Wii is in the lead with 456,000 units sold, the Xbox 360 is only slightly behind at 410,000. The PS3 is still playing catch-up on 285,000.

Those of us in other territories shouldn't hold their breath for a price cut, however. When asked if this was the first step in an international pricing strategy, Australian Microsoft rep Jeremy Hinton replied:

"Today we're only announcing Australia and New Zealand and what you will see is that certainly over the next 12 months that price drops and price activity will not happen globally. We've been given more authority to do what's best for the Australian consumer."

Nintendo must be laughing all the way to the bank, how they can justify charging the money they do for what is nothing more than a suped up Gamecube beggars belief.

Ah well, I suppose it is the masses that are to blame.

PEOPLE. STOP BUYING THE WII. PLEASE.

I thought 360 performed terribly down in Oz, or is that just something fanboys like to make up?
vulcanraven01 on 1 Jul '08

wildhook2 on 1 Jul '08

Oh, im sorry. You are right I am a doofus.

Here was me thinking that CVG had posted news on how the consoles are selling down under, giving stats for all 3 and I commented on it. I am an ignoramus.

PS: I followed this link from the front page where anyone can read it and comment on it how they wish or am I misunderstanding the premise of a forum? Please enlighten me 'o' knowledgeable one.

While not agreeing with Stonecold's wii comment, I see loads of people complaining that other system owners are on their threads.

I never go through the forums. I click on them from the news or front page. If someone has a comment to make; let them make it. If you don't agree; respond.

It's all good people. We really shouldn't get so wound up about all this!

Ditto - people only moan about others 'being in their forums' because said invader is usually saying something truthful that the owners of a specific console want to deny. It's better for them to not hear it and live in blissful ignorance.

the wii obviously brings something to the table that people like, just because of the hardware specs you shouldn't knock it. as far as i understand it every wii makes a profit where as every 360 and ps3 makes a big loss so i suppose Nintendo are laughing at that. if the 360 was sold for a profit i suspect its price would be a lot higher than the wii.

He's not knocking the Wii, he's knocking the price of the Wii. And he's right, its too expensive for what it is.

Im not knocking the Wii on its appeal to the masses I just think that Nintendo must be making an absolute fortune from their latest console and find it incredible that so many new people are buying it all the time.

Its kind of like a toaster, one of those things you have to have in your house although you might not necessarily use it every day (I havent used my toaster in years).

Good on Nintendo for broadening games appeal, I just hope we dont go so casual that in 10 years time Wii Fit is seen as hardcore.

Be honest though, if you personally were making ans selling something that people wanted, and they were prepared to pay your asking price, would you drop that price just because ?

Of course you wouldn't, and nor will Nintendo. Once demand begins to dry up, then they'll drop it. It just doesn't make good business sense to do it beforehand.

It really is - you try doing that advanced Hula one for 6 minutes. Holy F**K, I though I was gonna die... Smile

my point being that it only appears this way because the other consoles sell for such a loss, if they sold for a profit the wii would seem like a bargain. if the ps3 which sells for £300 now was sold for a profit how much would it be £400-£500 (it started at £425) maybe? who knows but perceptions are altered by this fact.

Hey, I understand exactly where Nintendo are coming from, its all about supply and demand and right now Nintendo's demand far outsrtips their supply (a cunning plan?)

Of course they wont drop the price but if people stopped buying it in their millions for say just 2 months then maybe just maybe they would have to look at price reductions, heck, then ill even buy one but not until they lower that price.
StonecoldMC on 2 Jul '08
Going off topic, I agree with what has been said, as an owner of a Wii myself, I'll admit that they are overpriced for the technology you are buying, even more so when you consider the 360 Arcade bundle is cheaper than it...
Sadly people are still willing to pay the price (myself included) so Nintendo will continue to milk us until demand runs dry.

i dont own a wii but i have to disagree again. the wii uses a brand new way of playing games in the controller which i imagine had a lot of R&D invested into it. this alone would put the price up as it is something brand new, once the technology has been around a while the price will go down. having said that, they wont reduce price until sales begin to dip and there is no evidence of that.

people complain that pc's are expensive but if you can put one together for £450 that is more powerful than a 360 or ps3 by some distance does that make the 360 and ps3 over priced?

I know Australia only has a smaller population, about 20m I think, but I agree. Seems tiny.

Don't know how many consoles have sold in the UK, but I'm sure it's more than 3m, which would be roughly the same ratio. Maybe they have better things to do?

Current catalogue pricing in Australia is:

360 Arcade - A$278
360Pro - A$449
PS3 - A$669
Wii - A$388
DS - A$198
PSP - A$248

You have to remember that this is only M$ rrp,not what stores will actually charge.

Also looking at the sales figures I don't think these include the 30K PS3's given away with HD tv's last year.Sony is currently running a promo again in AUS giving away 35K PS3's with any Bravia HD tv purchase so the actual install base maybe at a minimum 65K higher for PS3 than stated.

Expect the AUS sales charts to go haywire over the next month as the Toy sales kick in.
