PreviousBioWare MMO on its way to consoles? Game file-sharers sued  Next

Blizzard's got one more up its sleeve...

*cough* World of Starcraft *cough*
Blizzard has confirmed that it is working on one more unannounced game and that game is another MMO.

Company big man Rob Pardo spoke briefly about the title when asked about Blizzard vacancy postings calling for staff to work on a "next gen MMO."

"Not it's obviously [Diablo III], because it's not an MMO," he said to Online Welten. "So we have another development team. So yeah, there's still an unknown project in development from us."

There are a few possibilities here. Three in fact. One is a new Diablo MMO. Two is a new IP. And the third is World of Starcraft. Speculation aside, there's no obvious frontrunner. Although WoS does seem most likely.

No doubt they'll be an announcement at BlizzCon 2008, whatever it is. Mark October 10 on your calendar, folks.

Surely WoW 2 is also an option? Definately the least interesting option but still an option if Blizzard wanted to cash in.
Thalanos on 2 Jul '08
I reckon they need to brach out in the style of Battlefield Heroes. I.e. make a free MMO (WoSC) with possible optional extras...

That would be great.

The devise a way to get rid of grinding in MMO and I'll be happy.

For a bit.

Really? They will be an announcement??

Do journalists even need to take English classes these days?

I actually thoroughly enjoyed playing Trickster Online because it was free and very quirky. That also had ingame content that could be bought. The only reason why I stopped playing was due to my pings to the Korean servers going through the roof and never returning to normal Sad

But alas I doubt Blizz would make their new MMO free Sad Not that I mind of course, if it is a StarCraft MMO.... HOT DAMN!

I also agree that it could be WoW2. I've been waiting for some kind of announcement as to when the sequel would be in the works (I mean it's gonna come one day, right?).

the only sequel for wow would be WoS...wow has the platform to cover every event from wow history..

I am all for WoS. Believe you me I'd rather it be that than anything else. But it's pretty obvious that they will make WoW2 at some point though.

Ban comments like this? I'd rather see comments like yours banned. Thalanos has a very good point - it's not like Blizzard would be the first developer of an MMO to release a sequel to one, regardless of how popular the existing one is (ever heard of EverQuest?).
_Marty_ on 2 Jul '08
WoW2 ... I think it'll happen but with the userbase as it is, it'll be a long way off. As soon as WoW2 is announced, WoW will start to haemorrhage players (unless you can import characters into the newgame).

The announcement of WoW2 will be done in the same manner as Everquest II was announced, albeit on a larger stage.

World of Starcraft is a possiblity. Blizzard are good at keeping secrets, so this may be tucked behind a sofa somewhere, waiting until the feeding frenzy of Diablo III has died down.

However, I do wonder whether any company has the resource to push both Diablo III and World of Starcraft at the same time. Marketing and distribution, not to mention coding and testing... I don't see it myself.

My money's on something much smaller. A new IP would be very interesting, as Blizzard have struck gold time and again in the past.

We'll probably find out they've struck a deal with Marvel behind everyone's back. Smile

Actually you're wrong! Blizzard have hinted on more than one occasion that either a complete engine rewrite or next-gen WoW2 is on the cards.

It would also make more sense than ever to do it now as the competetion has caught up with the likes of Warhammer and AoC for example threatening to eat into their established subscriber base. It's all well and good releasing yearly updates like 'Wrath of the Lich Kng' but if they want to stay ahead, a next gen. engine and complete overhaul is required.
Tonyb on 2 Jul '08
...or 4. World of Lost Vikings.
ajarman on 2 Jul '08
World of Woodcraft is my bet. Players work their way up through fine to course sandpapers in an epic battle against the dark lord Ikea for furniture supremacy. At level 30 electric sanders are unlocked and it makes the whole grinding process that bit more tolerable.
shades3k on 2 Jul '08
Can't see it being WoW2, if as the report is correct and a new MMO is announced at Blizzcon this year, then it would kinda take the wind out of still unreleased WotLK's sails.

WoS & WoD are also unlikely Starcraft 2 will probably have an expansion released about 18 months after initial retail, and I wouldn't expect Diablo 3 until 2010. Wouldn't be surprised if it was indeed a completely new franchise. About time Blizzard created one, actually!
Aos on 2 Jul '08
I really hope it is a new IP. Mainly because it would allow Blizzard to explore story and game mechanic ideas that have not been excluded from their current crop of games purely for the sake of consistency with the history of the said games and their fanbase. I also would like to see a new IP in MMO form because without an established fanbase it would not be as stupidly populated (at least initially) as something like WoS would be
kr3mlin on 2 Jul '08
WoW 2 has to come out sooner of later.

But I don't think this soon.

New IP please, i'm not a big starcraft fan.
gothchild on 2 Jul '08
I doubt that's it WoW2 and don't think that a WoW2 will ever exist. Mainly because the Warcraft mythology is fairly well established through the original Warcraft games and WoW that a second MMO would be stuck with a remaking a lot of what already exists in the first game. Better then to keep evolving the original with further expansion packs and when needed graphical updates. You only need to look how everyone didn't flock to Everquest 2 from the original to see the difficulties in getting people to migrate to a new MMO sequel or otherwise.

only way i can see a wow 2 is if what they did was take wow world and make it with somehting like the unreal 3 engen so its bacicly the same game but with this gen looks rather then its dated looks and allow you to transfer your active account across to the new textures so you dont need to start over but

blizz stated at the wwi that they do not focus on makeing high quality graphics games like crysis and ame at the more dated pc your grandad uses that dosent have a graphics card

You are saying that, so people can run it on a poor pc, they use the ue3 engine...
SAeN on 2 Jul '08
wow2 will not come for years, it would be unfair to the many wow players to release a sequel to a game they are 'not done with yet', and sure many people are finished with wow, thats fine, but dont forget the millions that are still playing and loving it.

WoS makes the most sense, because lets face it, not everyone likes fantasy settings, so a sci fi mmo would grab an area of the mmo market that is there for the taking, anarchy online = crap, eve online = people cant walk around with their toons yet (and ccp have already said it will be limited anyway), its only space flight. And the terrible terrible 'why is this game even still running' star wars galaxies.

I guess there's always jumpgate evo, but jumpgate 1 sucked before, what made them think we wanted more.
Perjoss on 2 Jul '08
Hey you forgot Tabula Ra... no wait, you probably didnt Smile
ozzit on 2 Jul '08
I think the direction that Age of Conan is an interesting...albiet done badly.

We need to have more content out there for the mature gamer...Call of Duty with much blood and dismemberment for example.

I long to see a Real-time/Real-Action MMO... where you swing your sword and chop off an arm for exapmle...none of this HP figure count bollox.
I would like to see an replica game of WWII blitzed city Stalingrad, a FPSMMO that will redefine large scale gaming.

A Diablo MMO would be SO welcomed by me as it always has had that viceral aura thats trancends slightly into the horror genre and I strongly beleive that many people out there will agree.

Hopefully, not long now and I will be getting into the industry myself...to distribute my ideas so to say.

I wonder how much they'll charge for this one then? In any case, I'll stay interested until a monthly subscription is announced.
